Remember that quote you took about Pauline Kael? I feel like the Sixth Man is one of those films for me. I have a relationship with it and can't think straight lol. Same with Good Burger which I saw last week. I underrated my feelings to get the ratings

In the Mood for Love 2000
      ★★★★★ Rewatched 11 Dec, 2015

Absence and repetition are both effacing and intimate in this masterfully shot and economically narrated poem.

      92/100 - Amazing.

      The Fool 2014
      ★★★★ Watched 10 Dec, 2015

Strongly directed and well photographed depiction of corruption and hypocrisy in a small Russian town. Both literary and cinematic.

      83/100 - Great.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl 2015
      ★★★ Watched 10 Dec, 2015

A little hipster-meta-cliche Sundance Juno thing is going on, but it shows a palpable love of film and has a very touching and well directed ending.

      73/100 - Good.

Fury Road is officially the most overrated movie in my lifetime.
Hard to be a God is brutal. I'm a sucker for modern black and whites.

You know the light up, whistling yoyo? I got one of those for Christmas one year. Those scenes in the mental asylum would not happen today. Love the quirks of the 90s.

Fury Road is the best. Stop the hating!

I finally saw Creed this week. Given the reviews, I was expecting it to be good but even with elevated expectations, I was still surprised by just how great it was. Pop filmmaking at its very best imo...where both formula and franchise are invigorated by a fresh and strikingly authentic take. While I felt many of Coogler's writing and directing choices in Fruitvale Station were misjudged, his approach here both on the page and behind the camera is remarkably confident and assured. Definitely wasn't expecting this to be Top 10-caliber.

Saw Spike Lee's Chi-Raq as well, which was also great. With its use of text on screen, its forceful social message, and just its sheer moment-to-moment, anything-goes inventiveness, I was reminded of some of Godard's best work.

That's the the problem! If you aren't gushing over it, you're in the minority and nobody wants to be there. The conformity of opinion surrounding it is so weird.

I gave it 3/5 (closer to 3.5), but I have no strong feelings about it now. I can't even remember most of it. I suppose you could say that the theater experience carried it, but I made sure to watch this on Blu Ray on a widescreen with surround sound. I can only imagine how much more numbing the experience would have been in IMAX.

You yourself said that your opinions diverged more with your peers during your studies than with the average person. You would certainly expect this kind of discourse to be not only the norm but necessary in the world of criticism. There is a modern trend (one that @captain awesome posted an article about in this thread) for occasional overwhelming conformity in support of something. This is happening in the music world as well with albums such as To p---- A Butterfly being championed much the same. You have to question it a little. It's almost cult-like. This has very little to do with my personal, rather positive, outlook on Fury Road and more to do with what I've observed about its reception as a whole.

lol, I definitely agree with that, and I can accept you don't like it as much. You seem to like it just fine. 3.5 is a fairly strong rating. I was kind of just being facetious, saying if you don't remember it you ought to rewatch it (as if all films you cant remember you ought to rewatch, even though it's not really practical nor what you'd want to do with a film you don't love). I don't mean to come off as saying you NEED to rewatch and therefore you WILL fall in love with it or anything like that. If anything nothing will change. Just kinda riffing on your post in what I thought was a nice light manner lol

    Maybe it should have said
I think you need a rewatch :P:P:P:D:P LOL

yeah i feel like theres a few modern factors (social media, blah blah)... but its also, this is something people feel passionately about (generally) so as a result people have a habit to feel passionate about all the things they see too. in the other words, you can be a film lover and not always love films-- which imo trips up some people

How come I keep seeing so much love for Magic Mike XXL? Thoroughly enjoyed the original, but I have no idea why the sequel exists

Would be in my top 15. This is exactly what Charlie was saying tbh and I'm with him on that. I think the film is fantastic, but just because I don't have it at the top of my list people catch feelings.
