Anomalisa was an excellent film that will probably make my top 10. I have little doubt that it could get even better with more viewings. Having said that, I was ever so slightly disappointed...this comes entirely from my sky-high expectations....it wasn't quite as immensely powerful as reviews had led me to believe. It IS sticking with me, though, as Kaufman films often do (felt mixed on Synecdoche, NY while watching but it took weeks to get it out of my head).

45 Years was lovely btw, very understated with some beautiful performances.

No way could I ever do a list. I feel kind of sorry for whoever does IMDB or Best Picture. Less so for Ebert and Sight & Sound.

Cause there are masterpieces coming out now that are just as good as any "certifiable masterpiece"

Sure, but they require sifting through crap that won't last. That or listening to other people which is no different than a "certifiable classic" except for a more shallow field of competition.

Sometimes films that aren't considered masterpieces are more enjoyable. I don't watch every single movie but I watch anything that catches my eye and most of the time it's great. It's kinda boring to just watch stuff that everyone regards highly, more fun to choose filmmakers you've enjoyed and just watch more from them.

Exactly. So why not focus on that instead of focusing on being trendy and contemporary?

A lot of the filmmakers I'm interested in are currently releasing movies.

All I'm saying is that with a century of filmmaking behind me why should I dedicate a disproportionate amount of time to the present?

45 Years will definitely be in my top 10. It has one of the best endings of the year alongside Carol and Phoenix. I hope to see Anomalisa sometime this week.

Film isn't like that tho @Charlie Strangelove . I could go ahead and only watch masterpieces. I could probably make this a rubric. Only watch a film if it has serious 'masterpiece' vibes. I could do this and watch a film a day for the rest of my life and still not be complete. There are too many f---ing films. and depending on my mood there are a number of types of films I like to watch. Masterpieces require from me: utmost attention, reasonable setting/screening, zero alcohol, open and alert (caffeinated?) mind. But, frankly, this is the least state I'm in. Most of the time I'm tired, it's late, I feel like drinking, I want something funny, I want something serious BUT NOT TOO serious. I end up watching something GREAT but not masterpiece if im tired. I watch a GOOD film when it's late. I watch a s-----y FUN film when I'm up for a drink. Obviously 1 can go with b and 3 can go with c but you know what I mean.

A lot of people are misunderstanding me. For instance, The Toxic Avenger is something I would consider a masterpiece. It's not a question of elitism. It's a question of pop culture really. Why do we value things that are new? Is it a social thing?

keeping up with popular culture I guess. I didn't see Star Wars VII till a few days ago and people kept asking me how it was and making fun I hadn't seen it and yet and s---. Maybe we all wanna be able to contribute to that water fountain conversation.

Just asking because I've only watched 25 movies from 2015 and that's only a third of the movies from it that I wanted to see. Watching 70+ movies from 2015 would easily make it the most I've seen from any particular year.

Yea it's a bit weird. And it's why I only really feel confident talking about best of the year etc. when its films from like 2013/2014/2015 cause these past three years are the only ones I've done a pretty d--- comprehensive look at the year by watching 100+ films and going to film festivals. Any previous year, from 1895 to 2012, I feel like I'm way behind and will never catch up. It also means I tend to have more 5 star films etc. in recent couple years than in any specific year in history because I've plainly seen more. It makes it somewhat difficult to critically compare contemporary films with 'classics'. But at least I know I'm doing contemporary films right.
