That’s with every sport. Numbers will never be able to capture the full picture or context but that doesn’t mean they should be disregarded either. As technology advances so do statistics & exactly what we can numerically show. Argentina’s WC was ended by the eventual WC winners, a game which they were big underdogs & Messi has two assists in. The Roma game he played poorly, I agree, but so did the entire Barcelona squad.

My question is, how much impact do these one or two games have? If you have a player that’s scoring more, assisting more & creating more chances but another player performed better in a “big game” (whatever that might mean), how do you quantify that? When it comes to individual performance, shouldn’t we favor consistency over a couple big games?

I think I've been on record in here when it comes to this, which brings me back to these award ceremonies shape-shifting criterias. At times it was awarded for consistency & others for the zeitgeist of a team's success. It can go into further semantics but we've had two players that have warped that norm and put up such remarkable numbers that it blurs a lot of lines. I value consistency but football has always been about moments, which once again f---s over defenders since their work isn't valued enough. If it were up to me, Varane should be on the podium for both his club & international performances

This German team lacks flair & excitement, they're trying to impose stagnant possession and halfspace occupation without individuals that can ruin defensive schemes...they're playing like the old Germany lol.

Which again is why metrics are the best way to go. Humans are imperfect. We tend to focus on the flashy players the most while others go unnoticed.

Absolutely, like I mentioned above, I love to see expected goal rates and analytics to help bring further perspectives whether it's an individual player im following or how the match day went about. But it does come with the flaw of the eye test--I.e.--a team looks like they outperform the opposition but they still didn't get the result. It can split off into so many scenarios but that's the fun in it; it generates a healthy debate.

A bit unlucky that Wijnaldum didn't get that pk in the 1st half, looked like one to me. But France is just a tough team, solid across the board. Mbappe is special guys, have to reiterate it

Couldn't be a worse way to start a UCL campaign than a trip to Camp Nou lol. Naturally I hope for the upset, football is weird sometimes. You guys got a good chance to make it out.

Liverpool-PSG is essentially a shooting contest and might go down to if a goalkeeper can actually pull off some crucial stops.

One thing PSV have going for them is form, Tottenham have been stagnant and Kane has not been healthy no matter how much he denies it. Inter have been disappointing so far, the new recruits haven't settled in to Spalletti's scheme yet. We need to see if the teams' fortune changes further down the road, it's a very tough group
