May 12, 2017 Sorry for the long a--- post.... but had to get this off the dome... This thread and the varying answers all in all, Is an absolutely perfect example of exactly why EM is at this point as an artist whereby he is failing to meet expectations. It's simple really. Those expectations..... (I don't wanna even use the word 'high') are just exponentially 'unrealistic' that's the problem these days. Literally it seems like everyone to a man (or woman) wants something from Marshall completely different to the next person. Em is diverse or at least has been throughout the years, and as such that has attracted a broad demographic of followers who all appreciate different aspects of his music. If individuals don't get the exact styles/punches/features/beats/voices & layering/production/subject matter that they desire.... they are just gonna flat out hate on the project, because em didn't cater exactly to their desires. It's a legacy issue. It's the era we live in. I'm honestly fully confident that if em came out in 2017.... with an album quality wise, on par with The Eminem Show.... It would still get a s--- load of hate and whining about the content. There was no legacy and a nearly 20 year career run back then to hold him up to a pedestal like we do now. There was no nostalgia clouding judgement. It was all happening in real time. Hindsight does weird things to us. A lot of peeps see the past as the 'good ol times' it's a natural human trait. Atomically almost makes anything old 'golden' to a person at least psychologically. U remember that s-----y kids programme on TV when you were young? Or that film that you used to watch near on every day until you got older and found weed and women. When you watch that s--- back now as a grown man.... you can see as an adult in comparison.... actually that s--- s----d... 'BUT I loved it'. It will always hold a place in your heart. It can be the exact opposite too. You miss the wave on certain tings when you're young because if doesn't peek you radar as an adolescent... you discover it years later.... and you 'think d--- that s--- was good, how did I miss this way back when'. Point I'm making is nostalgia can without a doubt cloud a persons judgement on quality, in the exact same way that, fate and timing can also affect ones perception on an artist/project. If the first time you had ever heard of eminem as an adult was Encore for Example, would it have been quality enough to have had enough of an impact on you to mean you start checking for him as an artist, and delving into his back catalogue etc? Same question applied to a teenager.... it would be a completely different perception. Bottom line.... This dude is too 'open market' now. Everyone has an opinion, and he's gonna end up falling short 99.9 percent of you peoples expectations because you all want a different aspect of things he's done in the past. And if he tries something new, you'll probably flat out hate it because it's not what you're used to. Marshall can't win now. Lol. f--- it at this point, he owns no one anything, and should just be making music for himself. If you like it sweeeeeet go cop it.... if you don't you had a good run as a fan.... move on and appreciate the 'good ol days' for what they were to you. Either way people will continue to go back and forth, and this polarising analysis of his material will continue way into the next decade.
May 12, 2017 Pretty spot on tbf mate And those that 'don't like his music anymore' (yet still make threads about him): Marshall couldn't give a f--- less anyway so go listen to someone else
May 12, 2017 nostalgia has very little to do with it, Em's music been very bad for years, but in very different ways and people just don't agree on what's the absolute worst. If he came out with a good album people would like it, but it won't happen because he makes atrocious music nowadays
May 12, 2017 Nah eminem still makes great music mmlp2 was great, and the songs he put afterwards was also great
May 12, 2017 The thing is the term 'bad' is so loosely vague and lacking in detailed definition. Like define 'bad' in the context of general mainstream hiphop standards? And that is exactly what I mean when I say nostalgia clouds judgement. I mean, I personally think Its bs that eminem has made consistently 'bad' music now for years for example. Its not exactly of the consistency that we're used to but em still drops some real nice stuff from time to time. I think the vast majority of mmlp2 is very good, shady xv has its moments, southpaw was alright. Ems still f---ing dope. At least that's just my opinion, Trouble is most people hold him to his previous standards, and some of those people don't even really realise it. Some people who still lurk these pages, but yet claim that em now sucks period, seem to be hanging around in the hope of somethin happening that never will. Those people that think that way.... I'm telling you now... if he made another classic they still wouldnt accept it because to them it would t match previous standards. Does another 'classic' eminem album have to be better than the first three albums for it to be considered classic still is what I'm asking? If those albums are your standards for classic, then s--- there aint many other classic records in hiphop ever. Some people hold onto those fist three albums with such high regard is what I mean, that anything new from 44 a year old em will not tick the boxes. He cant give some people what they want anymore. To say he makes 'bad music' is so vague an inaccurate, just because he doesn't make a whole 'classic' body of work anymore, does mean he's point blank 'bad'. That reeks to me of something someone who can't let go of the 'good old days' would say to to be honest. Exactly what I mean about perception.
May 12, 2017 yeah you just basically repeated your previous post. Cool for you if you enjoy his music I guess
May 12, 2017 any song that involves corny r--- jokes (coming from a 44 year old father of three lol), technical s--- for the sake of being technical, watered down cookie cutter pop garbage, ear grating delivery basically all of his worst gimmicks.
May 12, 2017 Well not really. I challenged your definition of bad, and I also asked you if you think that by definition eminem will have to make a 'better' album than the first three for it to be considered classic but you have sidestepped all of that conveniently. Oh and yeah sure... some if his music I still do enjoy. Because some of its still pretty good, and not all 'bad' but again that's just my opinion.
May 12, 2017 Eminem is drastically different on SSLP and TES but people still rate them as great. If Eminem released a genuinely consistently good project I think people would get behind it. His last 4 albums have all had glaring problems but they had moments too. People generally recognise that.
May 12, 2017 A true artist changes and evolves. Just the new things he's trying weren't what people wanted! When he tried to recapture his old self with MMLP2 he failed miserably. Relapse was the type of risk he needs to take. It was fresh. The accents got on people's nerves but it was still new and had that classic Eminem feel. Give us Careful What You Wish For, Cocaine, Deja Vu, Same Song & Dance, Forever, Beautiful, Going Through Changes, Cold Wind Blows, Brainless, Fine Line, and songs like those and it would be an instant classic in my book. I think others would welcome an album full of records like that.
