I know this isnt the regular order ppl have kanyes discog in but I seriously loved his old sound. Yeezus TLOP and 808s may be at the bottom of his discog for me but I still like them a lot.

This was a nice read @Big Cuntry! A great throwback and nostalgic piece.

Sidenote - I was adding Graduation to Title Drops and came across this on Genius which I never knew, and thought was funny:

"You got D's, muthafucka D's, Rosie Perez"

Rosie Perez criticized Kanye for this line:

I’m a woman of a certain age and if you’re gonna mention me in a song, have a little respect. He mentions my breasts. When you walk down the street and you have 15-year-old boys.. and they’re like, ‘Yo, Rosie, D’s D’s, Rosie Perez,’ it’s no good

This line is also a reference to the 1989 Spike Lee joint “Do the Right Thing” in which the character Radio Raheem yells at the Asian store clerk for D batteries for his boom box: “I want D’s MFer, Ds!!!” (Rosie Perez plays Mookie’s girlfriend in the film)

I’m guessing Rosie didn’t catch the allusion..

Update: Rosie Perez reveals she was flattered by the line.

This world would be a better place with a @Big Cuntry review for every Ye album.

Awesome review, it's one of my favorite albums in a vacuum--the highlights on here Im sure I've played once a day since they came out 10 years ago. It's his least fascinating work on the surface, but it's probably a great starting point for like casual or new fans since it's so accessible and as you said, was the bridge from Ye with the Rocafella chain to Ye the jet-setting rock star that he became.

Yup great piece. Grad isn't his best work but it has such a distinct sound on the album the whole way through. It's such a breeze to listen to front to back and some of the Grad cuts like Bittersweet Poetry are amazing. It probably has some of his best quotables too.

This was my s--- back in 2008. Kanye's last two albums to me were more "traditional" but listening to this felt like I was listening to something special. I've read in many places that Kanye was making "stadium rap" and in many ways, this is "stadium rap". Bands like U2, Journey, *NSYNC, Billy Joel and even Janet Jackson put shows on and piratically filled up stadiums but with "Graduation", it opened the doors for many rappers to fill up stadiums ranging from new ones like Kendrick Lamar and Rick Ross to older ones like Nas.

It could be argued that compared to his other albums, it's weak but if this album hadn't dropped than Hip-Hop artists would still be playing in small venues and wouldn't get worldwide attention like a superstar. Because of "Graduation", rappers became more than just a niche; they became a force to be reckoned with and it could be argued that Hip-Hop became the most popular genre because of Kanye.

Roc-A-Fella was a force to be recokned with but Kanye West is one of those artists they put out that not only managed to be bigger than the Roc but change the genre entirely and while we have so many subgenres right now, rap and hip-hop as a genre and culture is like it or not, a part of our lives.

I need to actually sit down and give this a dedicated listen sometime in the near future.

I've heard it multiple times, in full... but I never got into it despite the obvious electronic shift that would move him towards his recent sound.

I also mostly just listened to it in the background while doing other s---, not really paying it much attention.

    That should probably change.

Love GRADUATION but I do view it as his worst album. "The Glory" is still probably my all-time fav Kanye song tho
