So my MacBook is getting pretty full of music (almost 15,000 songs) and I'm looking for a good and cheap external hard drive. Anybody use one or know of a good deal?

Also, thought it would be interesting to see how many songs everybody has in their library whether it's iTunes, Spotify, etc.

Edit: Looks like there's another thread already for how many songs yall got :kyrie:

I got a Lacie 1 TB drive. It works great. You can format it to be directly compatible with PC or Mac. As well it will keep old backups with your Harddrive. So if you deleted something and then backup and it's gone in the new backup you can go back to former backups and it should be there. Luckily I haven't had that happen but it's been a good HD for me.

Amazon.com has it for 150. I'm sure you can find one for cheaper though, I've seen harddrives go cheaper but I'm not actively looking for one so I can't quote a price. Here's what it looks like

Itunes currently has 11419 songs, 68 gigs.

Good call. Hopefully I'll at least get some input on external hard drives

Definitely going to look into that one and hopefully find it cheaper since I'm a broke a--- college student haha. 1 TB also sounds like the ideal amount of space I would want.

You might want to look at larger drives, sometimes they'll be cheaper. Like if a 1 TB is 150... you might be able to get a 2 TB for 50 or 75 more, so it's more b--- for your buck of course.... but at the same time if you don't have the funds then ya. But I can't complain about my LaCie it's been great.

I also suggest even picking up some USB's to back up stuff, then it's portable. Especially if you're a student. I got a few USB's backed up with University work and other stuff post University. Always smart to back up stuff just in case.

But for example if you got 60 Gigs of music.... Copy a few files paste etc. Remember you CANNOT move files that are over 4 gigs... which sucks b/c if you download movies and they're over 4 gigs you can't copy paste these on a USB. A Harddrive though for sure.

I know I'm a bit late, but Hitachi drives are the most reliable according to a lot of surveys.

People saying that Western Digital drives break easily are r-----ed. It's not the company's fault if you drop/bump or turn off the hardware without safely removing it... I had a 1 TB WD drive back in 2010 and that sucker lasted me 5 years. The only reason I threw it in the trash was because I didn't want it anymore. Dudes need to take care of their gear better. Get a server tower/drive enclosure and put a fan near them so that the temperature doesn't go above 55 celsius. I find it funny how when my Seagate failed, it failed outright in 2014, but WD failed in a way that let me move the files off of it back in 2009. Not saying Seagate is bad, just pointing that out. I have 4 TB Seagates I got from a friend and they are fine, but their failure rates are really low according to surveys, mainly because they are fresh models.
