If Eminem (sorry for bringing him up repeatedly but he's a good example) died the day after TES released would people to this day be talking about how perfect his discog supposedly was or would they be saying he had 3 great albums and infinite, that he had an almost perfect discog if it wasn't for that poor cheap solo release before Dre signed him?

    the first one.

and like a lot of rappers said, kendrick still has one of the best catalogs, even compared to the all time greats.

This. If anything not taking his 2 last mixtapes into account is actually hurting his legacy as he's only 4/4 instead of 6/6

I'm not going off topic. I'm generalizing and broadening my argument. Why would mixtapes tarnish discographies, when the idea behind a mixtape is something that isn't perfect or finished or calculated

also, mixtape taint discography? when you really think about it...a lot of people take 'mixtapes', aka non-studio official releases, to put out demos, screw-around tracks, parodies, etc etc just trash or more content for their fans

that hardly taints a discography???? @BuffaloBoy V The World

HHDX recently wrote an article about kendrick's flawless discography, and it included both EP and O.D.

and OD made it on pitchfork's best mixtapes list. So even if we were to take that s--- into account, then kendrick discography would be even better :whew:

the point is, you said everyone ignores his beginnings as an exception and dont do it for anyone else...when in fact I just thought of Infinite off the top of my head and there are guaranteed more artists whose beginning projects are ignored because they weren't their 'true' selves until later on in their music careers

example....if a full Kanye mixtape leaked today from back before he became anywhere near as good as he is now and it s----d

you think people would say "welp, Kanye's discog isn't perfect anymore"? of course not

I wouldn't say everyone does at all..how many times do people constantly refer to "the start of Eminem's career" "Eminem was perfect" etc etc

They are talking about his 3 good albums

no one ever says "yeah man those three were good, but after Infinite!

no. 'old Em' was the great one.

Mixtapes are often not taken into consideration, mostly because they used to be free music for fans, they were never meant to represent the rapper's best effort.

Times have definitely changed a rappers are now trying their best on their mixtapes, but I still don't take them into account when discussing a rapper's catalog.
