Apr 2, 2017 Just tried re-listening to Blem. And frankly i'm a bit fed up with drake's bs. Lyrically, the use of patois is 'not that bad' minus a few cringe-worthy moments i can write of as humor. But his delivery is so drab and one dimensional, that it's an insult to dancehall that he thinks this gimmick is anything but cheap trash. Again, lyrically speaking he makes decent if not slightly cringeworthy use of the language, but my real issue is with his delivery. Now for some reason people find drake's unbearably drab notion of singing to be appealing, and to be fair, the tone of the content often matches the voice he uses, so it at least doesn't feel out of place on albums like take care. But modern dancehall is a genre defined not least by it's vocal dynamism. So drake's lazy delivery doesn't help his already half-assed gimmick accent or the fact that he doesn't go any further than surface level stereotypes in his lyrical content. This lack of creativity surpasses lil yacthy, and the end product is so boring that it's almost offensive that these weren't thrown out the window. It's bad when screaming arabic r--ist has a more artistic end product. Drake never ventured too far from his safety net sound, but his attempts to fuse genre's end up being some of his least creative efforts ever. The polish of the sound might be what hides how lazy and uninspired drake sounds.
Apr 2, 2017 More life is still great btw, this is just me bitching about how drake's general dancehall fusion attempts make him sound lazier than usual
Apr 2, 2017 @Vybz good post, but a nearly identical thread exists already so i merged. but like @Cunner said, he's not trying to sound jamaican or do sean paul covers or nothing. he's just working toronto slang in to his writing. he's not rapping in accents like eminem was.
