Jan 5, 2015 And ftr @CharlieWork I can't comment on how they've aged because I didn't listen to them when they came out, I just felt that someone needed to stop and point out that if you're looking to old Eminem for mature, intelligent themes then you're doing it wrong
Jan 5, 2015 Not being a d-ck but I legit don't see how they were ahead of their time in an era with illmatic and reasonable doubt etc etc
Jan 5, 2015 Explaining why you shouldn't expect maturity from f---ing Eminem = Getting defensive? Ok then. Btw, real mature adding the insult afterward mang
Jan 5, 2015 Skippy, MMLP is definitely ahead of time (just for mention one Eminem album). Stan was something completely new. The subject matters on the album where different. Eminem, instead of talking most of the time about the ghetto where he lived, he was rapping under a violent character that under the art of the sarcasm and irony destroyed a lot of people in that time. "Who Knew" is an example of what i am talking about. Other example of a really innovative song is "Kim". Marshall created an incredible track that makes you feel really uncomfortable . A lot of people hate the song, a lot of people love the song, but one thing for sure: "Kim", when you heard it the first time, cause in you a lot of things. And that's the power of music. I am not going to compare MMLP with Illimatic or Reasonable Doubt. But i am just telling you that these records where ahead of time.
Jan 5, 2015 Again, not trying to be a d-ck, but being an edgelord doesn't make you ahead of your time
Jan 5, 2015 Not the whole thing, only Stan, Way I Am, and Real Slim Shady. Still plan on giving it a full listen but I'm just saying being edgy doesn't constitute being progressive imo
Jan 6, 2015 SSLP - sounded great then, is still great now. Has aged well. MMLP - still great, but too reliant on 1999/2000 pop culture. Still a very strong album, but many of its references feel dated and stale. TES - amazing at the time, overall holds up pretty well. Not perfect but I still love it. Encore - terrible in 2004, not sure how it holds up now because I don't want to listen to it Relapse - same as Encore Recovery - sounded pretty great initially, but is quite bad now MMLP2 - sounded solid initially, but its mediocrity became clear pretty quickly
Jan 6, 2015 I really don't understand the idea of "aging" Albums are supposed to be a reflection of the time period they're made. If they sound great then, they'll sound great now, as long as you were a fan then. They might not sound great compared to today's trends, but they weren't made for today. I mean, a perfect example is Illmatic. Illmatic hasn't "aged" well in comparison to modern music. However, it provides a nostalgic experience for most listeners who revisit the album. Same could be said for Eminem's first 3 albums. I'm not the same as I was when I listened to Eminem's first 3 albums, but there's no doubt that they are as good as people say they are. The only thing I can think of, is albums in the short term, like @Swizz said. When we first heard MMLP2, or Recovery, we thought they were better, at first, than what they really were. So, after more listens, it got worse. Classic albums, to me, don't lose that appeal. I feel his first 3 albums are time-less.
Jan 6, 2015 The sheer skill dsplayed on MMLP is what makes me rank it so highly, pop references aside
Jan 6, 2015 His first three albums were the s--- at the time, but I was like 12 so I didn't have a problem with the lyrical content, I found the s--- funny. Now that I'm a grown-a--- man, I find his rapping ability just as good, but the lyrical content is f---ing awful. And it gets so much worst on Encore and Relapse, if you bump any of those albums you better do it by yourself in your room, or with your other autistic loser friends. Never play any Eminem album when you're tryna impress a b---- to f---.
Jan 6, 2015 Not necessarily true b Not saying the rest of what you said was wrong, but there is such a thing as a timeless classic. The Beatles for example, or any Johnny Cash.
Jan 6, 2015 TES feels dated because half of the songs are about that pistol whipping thing that no one cared about than or now. Especially since it as two years old by that time.
