Exactly. I think that TRL interview was the peak of his popularity. The VMAs were a big deal back then. Em's performance was always the highlight of the show and the other artists and commentators seemed to have a genuine worry about what he was gonna do. The controversy he created back then was extreme. I remember my parents confiscating my Eminem albums after they looked up the lyrics to MMLP. They made me sit at the kitchen table with them and listen to k--- You. After Em's verse about "raping his own mother" my mom started crying and stormed out of the room. And my step-dad goes "You think this s--- is funny? Do you agree with the things this lunatic is saying?!" I can't think of any artist that has had that kind of impact before or since.

What makes me laugh is that the Kanye stans have forgot how good and how big Eminem was

A big difference between the two rappers -

Eminem made a real impact in Hip Hop but is modest not think it

Kanye thinks he's making a real impact in Hip Hop but he's actually not

Same here. I graduated in 02, when he was at his peak. All parents, teachers, etc absolutely despised him when MMLP was out. Then it seemed like by the time 8 Mile was out and Lose Yourself was on every radio and TV station nobody could deny that he was the biggest artist on the planet.

this interview is just crazy. so many people crying because they are in close to Eminem.

say whatever you want about Em and his skills and being white whatever but he is one of the biggest music icons of all time. He is up there with the Beatles and so on

I remember back when I was 7 or 8, my mom would drive me home from school with me, my sister and friends. We would always play Cleaning out my Closet. Looking back I have no idea how she accepted it. Although the only part we understood was the hook.

Yea and Em and Kanye were both hated on for different reasons. Em was hated by authority figures simply because of his music and controversial lyrics. Kanye is hated on because of his douchebag personality and being so d--- full of himself.

I was young still so I don't remember much of it. I knew who he was and my Dad also played TES and the 8 Mile OST a lot so I wasn't sheltered away from the guy at all.

Cannot put in words how big he was.

He was front page news (that's a reference to newspapers btw). Every single person, no matter age would be able to say who he was and what his story was (yes, even a 90 year old granny).

Minorities petitioned and picketed against him, his fans would follow his every move.

There's a reason he was the biggest selling artist if the decade.

All these artists you think are that big nowadays, are actually not that big, it's just the media and the internet that gives 'em the buzz.
I'm from Bahrain, a country many of y'all probably never heard of, and back when I first heard of him at 2000ish (I guess 2002), even before the internet, his song (COMC) was being played on TV. Yep I heard of him when I was a kid and even before the internet was available. Don't really have the perfect words to describe how big he was back in his prime.

I have never seen hundreds of protesters outside anyones concert like Ems before, i cant seem to find a video about it atm.

The TRL moments were crazy, even from the first one with Mark Wahlberg. No one has ever come close too how big he was

    i just found this

I remember I was in 5th grade when MMLP dropped. My buddy had gotten the edited version for his birthday. It was a surprise the CD completely skipped track one and still said the word "s---" lol. His dad came in while we were all listening and was like "I don't think this CD is edited enough. Then a week or two later my mom was watching the news and they were talking about Eminem and played k--- you. She insured I didn't have any of his CDs. They also brought him up in school. Handing out pamphlets telling us why Eminem was bad and how we should never listen to him.

He was soooooo big. I remember that despite being young at the time. Everyone was listening to him even in Poland and some people at my school even bleached their hair.

''Vaguely''. At that age you're just too young to comprehend the impact he had or formulate any solid memories about it.
