Sep 15, 2015 yes, earlier in this thread this sentence doesn't mean anything first of all, you have no idea about thug's "intentions." second, he's wildly experimental, so he's not taking elements of other rappers and using them to blow up the way drake is. third, intention has nothing to do with the quality of art. again, it wouldn't make his work worse if this were true, but you have no way of knowing this. go home.
Sep 15, 2015 @WPG, see i dunno. i feel like you're in a critics bubble almost. youre in LA afterall. the average music fan in the heartland (or, say, new england heh the mean sts of boston) may have heard of thug, but i sincerely doubt they have that deep connection with him, like they do wayne or even ti. maybe its generational. i will say ive talked to ppl v familiar irl with thug's discography, but see him as merely part of a 'style' and dont view what he does in the glowing terms described by the likes of narshus. is this the rapper u described as "dickensian" btw? rhetoric like that is where theres a disconnect (again, what im talking about is a shifting landscape to a certain extent -- maybe its good for thug he doesnt have an outlet like mtv making him into a more watered down version of himself.)
Sep 15, 2015 none of the people i'm referencing are critics. sigh "These aren’t Dickensian reversals of fortune: As a writer, Young Thug is concerned with tone over linearity."
Sep 15, 2015 No i didn't say popular music, i said (intentionally) popularized music. Popular music can mean two things.. 1) music crafted for artistic purposes which then blew up or 2) music meant to bring home buzz and profit. I don't feel that he adds much originality or substance to his songs. They feel like formulaic copypaste projects that miss a clear artistic intention or talent. Maybe i don't.. care to explain his motivations/intentions? I feel he's in a similar lane as Drake. The point being is i'm describing the symptoms, but at the core of it.. what's causing it.. is his unwillingness to express intellectual thoughts
Sep 15, 2015 It's a bright, guilty world. thx for context! no need to sigh tho (edit, jokes aside, reference is alot better than ppl had made it sound... a lil heady/smarty pantsy but meh) Why did you like this @Narsh? jc. and no, not goin to some show with 19 y/os sry
Sep 15, 2015 if you think thug lacks originality you're listening to the wrong rapper. i'm bored with this, bye.
Sep 15, 2015 because you were completely off base about the context in which wpg used Dickensian, mainly because, as usual, you're just trying to antagonize people for fun and not really being serious lol
Sep 15, 2015 That and Check i digg tho. But the best part was Jamie XX in this instance tbh. Sidenote: i couldn't help but feel that Kanye inspired this great tape of Jamie in many ways.
Sep 15, 2015 why do people that BARELY listen to the dudes discog ALWAYS the first ones to write an essay about why he sucks? i dont get it
Sep 15, 2015 no all jamie did was hand thug the instrumental and dude turned it around in like a day...before like the 8 other artists xx gave it to. the original version with just thug is even better than this one (which is a bit crowded tbh). there are so many examples out there
Sep 15, 2015 When i forget his voice irks me and i take a closer look at what the music is about it just feels so empty man. The beats are not bad tho.
Sep 15, 2015 in the first song he literally stops to list out the names of all his kids and how he'll take care of them if he's ever not around for some reason. this is a 22/23 year old...how is that empty to you? why are you deluding yourself into thinking you're actually taking "a closer look" lol
Sep 15, 2015 His lyrics are still mostly about being in the moment and having fun/feeling yourself. The beats (aside from lyrical acrobatics) make up for what is otherwise very basic entertainment. Perfect for a partying audience or when you need some music in the whip or on the train. But to me it's not in a monumental cultural league like some of you make it out to be.
Sep 15, 2015 are we still talking about the promise? the first song? that song seems to be about his relationship with his fiancee and kids for the most part..?
