Nah, that was years of untreated depression. You're the only blogger to ever move to LA. Please lecture me about conformity.

i dont think thats right. he hasn't "lost" anything. hes still a great artist. he just didn't make a great album imo. by his own admission he spends the majority of his time, not counting raising a family, on fashion. i think tlop has interesting moments for sure -- at least right now, it doesn't compare to the school trilogy, or anywhere near the informal trilogy 808, mbdtf, yeezus

i think ur right to think theres intentionality here -- he clearly wrote under the gun, etc. while its a great exercise, the 'urgency' feels more rushed and half baked in places to me

no, i def agree. it's not encore. but it's less inspired than his other output. you kind of sense middle age/stasis settling in... and like ive written elsewhere, i think stuff like calling out taylor or amber rose are desperate gimmicks to keep the old magic. (and you know what, to ur point, fine. he's earned this album. it's not especially dynamic imo, but maybe that'll let the next one come out fresher. im still interested)

d--- @Charlie mad af. i guess calling out someones mental breakdown is a third rail

I had depressive tendencies throughout my life. Unresolved trauma and emotional issues. I went to a small private college and once my roommate dropped out I kind of withdrew into myself. Broke it off with my girlfriend. Wrote a lot of depressing stuff. Suicidal thoughts and the whole shebang. Kept my grades up so nobody really figured it out. Then I transferred to a large public university to be with friends sophomore year. Lots of anxiety. s-----y transition. Still unmedicated. The girlfriend who helped me get over depression last time graduated and joined the Peace Corp. Winter shut me down hard. I skipped finals and sunk my grades. Had an existential moment. I'm cool now. I have my meds right and see a therapist every couple of months.

hold on, let's ignore for a second that narsh's argument is wildly apologist--there's actually something to talk about here.

i don't think for a second that this rollout was all some perfectly-plotted bit of performance art, but that shouldn't stop us from evaluating it along those lines, even just as a thought exercise.

we can go on and on about how we've "never seen anything like this before," and while the release date itself has never been f----- with this much, both Dark Fantasy and 808s had, like, two-thirds to three-quarters of their songs leaked or released in unfinished states before the street date.

so yes, this is the first time kanye's pump-faked as to what constitutes a final album, but we should think about how and why we're reacting the way we are.

d---, glad you're doing better now. When did the existential moment happen... last december, like a few weeks ago?

Also what was the unresolved trauma about

It's certainly interesting and refreshing to see a star of this stature do things seemingly on his terms, without the aid of a corporate pr team plotting optimal timing, etc. to an extent, you have to package this album with the experience - tracking the various rumors, the msg show. it's something but it doesnt replace the fact this is an underwhelming product - or, rather a missed opportunity. i would prefer he put the fashion ambitions on hold, tie some of these ideas together better
