    in Canada the mainstream media portrayed it as a harsh crackdown on democracy by the Spanish government

    of course, it is an unconstitutional referendum and if everyone in Catalonia voted independence would not pass

    almost half of the people in Catalonia are non-Catalan speaking Spaniards (economic migrants) who would never vote to leave..

    it is similar to Quebec separatism in Canada....not every Quebecois is for independence and all of the English speakers, Native Canadians and non-white immigrants oppose it
