    I was born and raised in a community with very few black families. It was a very white place to live. It's so weird being into black culture like rap music while being so distant from it. I think deep seated pains like racism are great for comedy, but when somebody genuinely holds beliefs like that I get uncomfortable. Even now when I have a black niece and nephew, multiple black friends, etc I know that growing up how I did around the people I did has had an effect on me. I grapple with it a lot. Especially in times like these where racial tension is a huge issue in America.

    Oh, and anybody who likes stereotypes should grow up in a racially homogeneous community. You learn really quickly that s-----y people don't all come in the same package. Not to mention how big of a deal social classes and the poverty line are.

    Where I grew up it was 100% white and very racist. I instinctively knew that their views were wrong by having empathy for people I never met.


    You're right about the homogeneous setting... I was surrounded by all white people who were Christian and most of the time they were awful to each other.

    I'm very conscience of race. Even after years away from home. I almost feel too aware of it at times. I'm sure growing up in a multicultural area dampens that kind of stuff.

    It can be. More specifically I think the way some posters talk about some incarcerated rappers--Shmurda, for example--just illustrates a narrow view of crime/the justice system and the way race affects those things.
