Nov 29, 2017 I started really listening to rap in 2007 (I was 15). I went back listening to classics and loved them. But I can also appreciate future etc. I truly fail to understand why people can't enjoy both older rap and modern day. Both are great in their own way imo

And Illmatic influenced rappers from the mid-late 90s, rappers from the 00s, and rappers from 2010-2015 and 2015-present. It's honestly not debatable. The only album that might be more influential is The Chronic. The BP is a good example tho
Nov 29, 2017 All those are good answers for classic albums (except the documentary which didn't influence anything and is overrated as f---), but I dunno if they're on par in influence with Illmatic except for 808s.

Nov 29, 2017 I can agree with that—I should have said impact rather than influence because I think this argument is kind of changing by mincing of words—but I'd argue it's the perfect example of a quintessential rap album.

Nov 29, 2017 @Charlie Work really what I mean is that I don't think that a bunch of albums coming out that are as revered as Illmatic takes away from its status as an impactful, quintessential rap album, and that's basically what some people were arguing. To go back to the film analogy, the fact that so many great films have come out since Citizen Kane doesn't make it any less impactful.
