Nov 28, 2024I like Kendrick but you can take the absolute best songs from all of his albums and combine them into one and I can name 50 Classic Albums that will blow that out of the water.
He's a great rapper but arguably the most overrated of all time in my opinion.

Critic reviews =/= the culture. Literally nobody in the real world gives a f--- about music criticism. The only time they enter the cultural nexus in the big 24 are from rage-bait viral reviews and lists 2 or 3 times a yearOmar Little, Ordinary Joel, Michael Myers and 4 others like this. -

I think Tyler is extremely talented but I do agree with you that his music is often overrated by rabid fans online but that has very little to do with being leftwing and a lot to do with the fact that he's shown extreme artistic progression and each of his albums sounds different than the last...which isn't an inherently good or bad thing, but is admirable nonetheless. Sometimes people mistake that for automatically being a good thing. But people have been doing that since 2010. His music gets talked about in a different light because...it's a different type of music. In 2017 when Flower Boy came out we were still dealing with guys who wouldn't listen to Young Thug because they thought he was gay for wearing a dress lol
tldr Tyler has always been acclaimed as an artistic genius by fans and critics alike whether or not that is deserved at any given point in timeOrdinary Joel, joeyp363, M.I.C. and 2 others like this. -

In terms of... acclaim. Album after album of high criticial and fan acclaim.
Like, any artist when they're in their prime zone - it's like they can do no wrong. They can't miss. Then they eventually miss and rarely get back on track, beyond flashes.
Em's run like that was relatively short (99-03) albiet one of the most powerful. Everything since has its fans and its moments, but he never really got back on track, in terms of critics and fans both being like 'yep, okay, he's on one right now', you could argue 09-013 was a bit of a second run, but not on all those levels. His only real run on every level was 99-03. So that's... 5 years.
Kanye's seemed longer than Kendrick's in my head, but, I think you'd have to say the run ended at Yeezus; not criticially, it was still fawned over but majorly divisive with fans. I know Life of Pablo is well respected by fans and criticially too, but I'd argue the first chink was seen as Yeezus. Then if you look at everything from Ye-to present... lots of mixed and sometimes negative perceptions.
So Kanye's, if you consider it CD to Yeezus was... 10 years.
Kendrick's so far... 13 years.
I know the last few have Kendrick albums have had a few detractors, calling them overrated or 'boring', but, this doesn't seem to be general or majority fan consensus. Really every album has hit.
Part of Kanye's decline in perception and reviews is definitely due to his public political views and antics. Much like I believe a lot of Tyler's opposite turn around is because he's now on the right side of the left; it's no coindience every project since 'coming out' is apparently a masterpiece lmao. Who tf makes 4 masterpiece in a row? Very unlikely, and I haven't listened to them all properly, but I do remember Igor being one of the trashest piece of s----s I'd heard at the time...
So do think perception of the artist has a lot to do with it too. And since Kanye has been espousing anti-sematic and other wacky views and being a general d-ck head... most critics couldn't bare to call something brilliant, even if they thought it. OR, maybe it's that before not everything was as brilliant as they were saying. But the positive perception of his image, political side etc. affected that.
I wonder if Kanye released Jesus Is King as his 2nd album if it'd be as badly reviewed. Probably would be hailed as an 'inventive turn by an artist daring to wear his beliefs on his sleeves' or some BS lol.
Don't think many critics or people admit or realise how much their opinon 'of the work' is actually tainted or enhanced by their view of the artist, as a person or whether they agree with their views.
Anyway,
TLDR: Is K Dot's run now the longest in rap history? On this level? Can't think of anyone else.Omar Little, Loyalty, Ordinary Joel and 2 others like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) -

If we are going by what the majority thinks then the answer to your question is yes. To a lot of people, including myself, Kendrick Lamar has been dropping albums that are good or better than good from 2012-2024. I guess you could make that 2010-2024 if you really wanna include Overly Dedicated and Section.80.
Ask certain people here though and they’ll say he fell off during or after d---. Some will say he hasn’t even been good since GKMC. All in all you bringing up Kanye was accurate because he is the only super popular rapper I can think of that is comparable in terms of critical and fan acclaim, but I think Kendrick has lasted longer at this point.
Side note: Barbed Wire is an underrated cut from Overly Dedicated I don’t see people mention enough. To this day it’s probably still one of my favorite Kendrick songs.Rodamon, Ordinary Joel and jankland like this.
