Feel like people are missing the point of Neighbors.
My take:
It's from Cole's perspective. Not "James". It's meant to link in Cole to the album narrative. The concept illustrates Cole trying to escape his fame within his own community to achieve annonimity in the wealthy community as well as being able to focus on his music without the responsibility of being a figure head and role model.
"Don't follow me. Don't follow me..." is him subconsciously speaking to his community as well as stereotypes, wishing to leave behind his responsibility (presumably including the responsibility to tell James's story to his daughter and to the youth at large) in order to pursue his career.
But by the end of the track (for obvious reasons) Cole realizes he'll never be able to integrate into the other community, not even on some "you do you, I do me" style (as he states was his preference). So he's faced with returning to his community to address his inner issues as well as the community issues (both with James and society at large).
The "well mothafucker I am" line is James haunting Cole, and represents that weight of the community responsibility that Cole feels subconsciously, always lingering in his mind, reminding him of what he left behind.
The outro represents Cole begrudingly realizing he has to return home to fulfill his responsibilities to James and the community.
I think the tones of voice he uses are very intentional as well. The verses have a laid back, soft and smooth delivery, showing and calm demeanor and intelligence that he makes an effort to portray outwardly. The hook is angry and distorted to show his inner frustration as a black man of working hard to represent something positive but continuing to be stereotyped by society despite all his efforts.
Basically I look at it as Cole and James went their separate ways after their conversation about James's premonition and his fear for his daughter. 4YEO could take place as a parallel narrative to 2014FHD between ATO2C and GOMD.J.T., Ordinary Joel, Spartan23R and 8 others like this. -

yo, one thing i want cole to do before his career is over is make a album that's uplifting
like a album full of hits, sorta like All Eyez on Me. just songs that make you feel good. really all eyez one me was pac's only album like that. before that pac was on some depression s---, (he went back to that on makaveli album) and just rapping bout real life s---. compare me against the world with AEOM. pac got out of jail and snapped, he said he made all eyez on me because he felt people wasnt appreciating his other s---, so he was like f--- it, let me switch my s--- up right quick
cole can still remain himself, and not sell out. i think it would help his career even more. one thing ive heard someone say about him is his music is depressing, like dont nobody wanna feel depressed all time. which i get it.. me i dont mind the depression s---, s---, life is depressing. heard someone say certain ppl dont like cole because they scared of reality, they wanna be lied to
closes album he had like that was cole world.
need him to make a cole world mixed with fhd
dont think he'll ever get back to that cole world s---, i dont think the n----- is happy. -

I think you misunderstood. Track can be hard and mixed lightly/softly at the same time. Folding Clothes is energetic but is still mixed lightly. None of the elements on that track are bothering your ears when played on highest volume. It's not as loud as it could be, but it's balanced so you can hear 80% of the song elements when played on 100% volume. I'll explain the difference visually to you.
This is the wave file of Foldin Clothes:
You can see that the peaks which are kicks and snares are dominating the mix. The vocals and instruments are the mid, most occupied part. None of the sounds are distorted or whatsoever. It's clean.
This is a wave file of Sneakin - Drake feat. 21 Savage - a b-----r as you call it:
Here you can see that every sound is distorted to give you that loud feel, there is no breathing room for anything in the song, it's just loud loud loud every second, which serves purpose but this is not a good mix, and if Cole did this with Immortal s--- would sound way off and out of place. You get it?
People nowadays are used to the way Sneakin is mixed and mastered because the standard in 2016 is that everything has too be loud first, and to get loud, you have to sacrifice something. Mez did a pretty good job on this album, it's not perfect, but it's his best mixed project so far.King Simba, Mike Tyson, Ordinary Joel and 8 others like this. -

All good.
Anyways over all I'm proud of Cole for making this album. Proved a lot of people wrong. Still far from perfect, but he finally stepped up as a concise writer which was my biggest issue with him through out his career.
This album is a loooongggg way from God's Gift (?) where the first verse was dope and the second was about cookiesKing Simba, Ordinary Joel, Equis and 8 others like this. -
