Also, whats commendable about his approach is that this guy really could have just released another Downtown or thrift shop and got another platinum plaque. Even if he did a song on social issues he didn't have to make an 8 minute long track about it that isn't made for radio.

He really is in a lose lose situation. Rob markman had a dope tweet about how Macklemore made this song for the white lady on the third verse. She lets her kids listen to Macklemore cause he's "nice" so Macklemore basically tryna reach all those privileged white kids

Yea, thats what i meant by not genuine, he hates that the majority of hip hop thinks of him as a joke and tries too hard to redeem himself instead of just making music. That track featuring afrika bambaata or whoever tf he got is prime example to me.
I mean he probably has good intentions, but yea seemd kinda corny. Like a politician droppin tracks to gain support from different demographics lol

So what is your explanation for him making songs like the first white privilege back in 2009? Was he still pandering then? Was he being purely apologetic then?

Yes he can be corny and preachy at times. Yes that Kendrick text screenshot was wack and he admitted it. But if he didn't win a Grammy over Kendrick, we are not even talking about him being apologetic even though he's been like this from the beginning.

I can understand how people might see it coming across this way but I feel like Macklemore is just doomed from the start with this song.

@El Ares lmao at that fact you think Afrika bambaataa is on that song. You formed an opinion on his intentions of a song you know nothing about:kdotrly:
"He's trying to prove his real hip hop by featuring rappers that the people listening to his music have never even heard of" what kind of logic...

@Kold - I was saying this in the other thread... he feels like this is his way of trying to make things right for him.

It just sucks that it's him who is doing it, because Kenny's album is like this but from the other perspective. People said it was not very good or whatever.... wonder how this will be received and if it will blow up... It will be ironic if it does don't you think?

Just my two cents but like I was discussing with the big homie @eddie I agree that his intentions were well-meaning but I'm just not a fan of how he delivered it. I just think I like it better whenever guys like Cole, Kenny & other contemporaries deliver their perspectives and inner turmoils :idk:

Yes Kendrick's album was not liked by some but critics and people still rave over it. Obama said it was AOTY. I think Kendrick's music is definitely having an impact, regardless. It was an even bigger topic the day the blacker the berry dropped. Kendrick was trending for a whole day. No matter how successful Macklemore is that won't take away from that. My only argument in all this is I believe this is the guy Macklemore has been from the jump and people are only saying he's like this because of the Grammy win over Kendrick.

Most of you guys are critcising Macklemore as a person because you don't like him. Fine. Understandable you don't like him, I'm not a big fan of him either, even though I'm from Seattle. But "It seems like we're more concerned with being called racist than we actually are with racism." - that line itself is a direct reflection of the reception of WP2. Like Kold is saying, Macklemore is doomed from the beginning because regardless of what direction he takes in the industry, there is going to be SOME sort of critcism due to him being white. But rather than sit idly by, I don't know about you, but I would rather have him speak on this issue. Whether you think it is coming from a place of guilt or apology, the song itself is a good step in this issue because these are important conversations to have.

you said that track is the prime example that he tries too hard to redeem himself in hip hop because the majority of hip hop fans thinks of him as a joke...
if you don't even know who those people are that he featured on the song (like the majority of current hip hop fans right now), how can he be using them for that purpose? Wouldn't he get Kendrick on a feature instead? or try and get common, lupe and mos def or some other well known real hip hop artists to help with his credibility?

Nah cus everybody already doing that, nobody is getting 80s rappers on their tracks. << and i truly believe that's the only reason he got them to feat. I dont buy that it came from a geniune musical standpoint. :idk: and the only reason i heard about that track is because the headlines were "macklemore gets 80s hip hop legends on his new song".
