An artist basically has to have really experimental or a "different" style of production...or act outlandish...those things will get an artist universal praise and recognition from critics and bloggers. Cole's production is more of a backdrop that fits the mood of his songs. It doesn't matter to critics how genuine his songs are. And he doesn't act like a d-ck head or clown in the media so they just dismiss him and say he's boring.

Havent heard tlop but once excluding that s--- msg stream so i aint even gonna try to speak on it, but how yall acting like kanye isnt a dope writer because he has a couple stupid lines? s--- aint all about dope punchlines and multisyllable bs, especially when it comes to this kanye.

I respectfully disagree about Kanye being being a better writer than Cole.
Can't say he's better when it's on record that Kanye has people help him write his lyrics. h---, Rhymefest comes to mind.

I would never argue Cole is a better writer than Pre Yeezus Kanye. Ever since Yeezus Cole has been a better writer without a doubt.

@KLD3816 idk i feel like kanyes production has always overshadowed his writing, but the writing on mbdtf is what makes it one of my favorite albums. He shows so much self awareness and the ability to put it down on paper. There is so much raw emotion being expressed there which makes him a much more intriguing persona on the mic.

@Kold i feel like we could make a good comparison between yeezus and born sinner since they both deal with dark moments and emotions in their lives. And if we're talking strictly song writing yeezus takes it tbh. Kanye always has a very concise point to make even if he drops some subpar "bars" in the process. Like i said his self awareness and raw emotion make him a much more intriguing song writer. Cole has always been the type of artist thats self reflective but he's never shown the self awareness that kanye shows. He is always very superficial in his subject matter. Even in BS which was his most personal material he never explored past his surface or just basic emotions like guilt and regret. I feel like he never could tell us much about himself that others couldnt tell for him.

I respect your opinion. I just personally disagree. I feel like Ye on Yeezus had some dope writing moments but too me it relies too much in brash statements that are not really effective. He relies on emotion to get his point across and it doesn't work with him like it does other artists imp. It's to the point but it's no as impactful as his earlier work imo. I don't think Born Sinner is without faults but moments like the reflection on slavery on the third verse on runaway and the inner battle between the two sides of himself on rich niggaz are more impressive than most moments on Yeezus. I don't feel like moments like that are superficial which is exactly what I would say for most of Yeezus that seems pretty plastic in much of its intention. That's just me though.

You know, I'm on the side that thinks that Kanye at his best is a fantastic writer. He's poignant and even elevates his production because it can be so raw and intimate. It's what made MBDTF so great to me.

But no, on this album, he's not very good for most of it. Let alone the fact that he's not actually saying or rapping much already, he adds a lot of forgettable and cringe worthy lines (and just straight confusing) like:

"Now if I f--- this model / And she just bleached her a------ / And I get bleach on my t-shirt / Ima feel like an a------"

What? And that's on a song with great production, good stuff from Cudi, and to that he only has like 10 lines to begin with. So the nonsense feels worse because he's saying so much less already. Right now, he's not better than Cole as a writer, at least if we go based off of both of their last releases. He's still an amazing producer and is able to bring together some of the best artists out there to create something unique and different, but strictly as a writer he's declined I'd say.

Feel the opposite on everything pretty much. Not saying cole is a trash song writer, he just lacks the qualities to emphasize his strong suits. And i feel kanye has those qualities
