I agree completely, but I don't think that because he isn't worried about his legacy as far as acclaim, recognition, etc doesn't mean he won't continue to push himself and his music. If anything, I think the fact that he's at peace with all the exterior pressure gives him the mental/emotional/creative space within himself to really put himself out there and experiment.

To be clear, "being great" and "being his best" aren't the same thing. I understand he's preaching the whole 'I'm just doing this to enjoy it and live in the moment' type stuff, but that doesn't mean he isn't trying to make great music. I think he's more apt to push boundaries and shift culture when he's doing music his own way. He'll find a lane and run with it because he wants to not because he feels obligated like he did on Sideline Story.

yeah it's true, FHD was his most comfortable album by far and u could tell just by the feel of it - it's so easy to pick up and listen to in whatever mood. He didn't really care to conform to anything with the singing being a good example, now u got a bunch of rappers thinking they can sing as well as rap on their records, have to give him props for that.

Like you, I want him to find his own sound and push it cos I don't think there really is a Cole sound, even Bas got a more defined sound atm.

I agree with you about FHD, but I don't think it sounded like anything new. The only songs that could possibly be considered "risks" are Apparently and Hello, and those still weren't big leaps conceptually, lyrically or sonically. He was just singing.

And yeah, he was on his way with his mixtapes towards creating his own sound. FNL still sounds so unique to me. And in my eyes, FHD was his way of tapping back into his old sound in an attempt to reconnect with that lineage of progression. Think about TWU, FNL, and FHD in order and that makes sense from a sonic progression perspective if those three had come in succession. My thought is that he'll tap back into his more lyrically dense style while advancing his sound, however he attacks that, and that will be when he has a true classic. Like we've discussed before, the bars weren't weak on FHD relative to rap in general, but they were definitely subpar as compared to the standard I have and that Cole has set for himself.

He just needs to find that sonic wave while coming correct with his rhymes.

I'm not worried about Cole at all anymore. Don't get me wrong, I want him to drop his best project yet, but I'm just anticipating greatness tbh whatever it is.

@johnny waverock Jazz and electro pop were both done in hip hop before Ye and Kendrick. They just did it in a unique way. Again Cole can do reggae influenced s--- and do it in his own way. It's not like he'll just be rapping on reggae beats like Nas but because he got the melodic s--- and can produce he could really tap into it and make it organic.

Again I'm not really worried about Cole like that because I feel like he's in a great space. If we get a reggae influenced album cool. If we don't that's cool too. I just want him to top his other projects and top FNL, and I think he will in the future.

I completely agree with you. And yeah, I'm not trying to say that Ye and Kenny and Jay were the first to use those influences by any means, just like Cole wouldn't be the first to use reggae. But the all the projects I mentioned earlier were executed to perfection like no albums had been before using whatever sound. It doesn't have to be the first time someone has tried it. But do it musically and lyrically and everything else to the degree that he's a master. And it doesn't necessarily have to be a specific genre of influences. Just do whatever you do to that level of undeniable excellence and originality.

But again, I'm just exited because he's clearly in a zone right now and I think all the dynamics surrounding his music are set up for him to level up again and give us something great.

If Jay can sell Tidal, Kanye deserves a huge cut. Whether we like TLOP or not, his push to only have it on the app doubled subscribers.
