I've noticed that, too. I never have to increase the volume while listening to TPAB

I mean fair enough. I get that. I just don't feel like its as serious as y'all make it seem. I think its more about the name than the actual output. Like all of a sudden Bas tracks sound clean because Ali mixing. Not to say he's not doing a good job, but it just seems a little trivial. Dedication mixtape are not "mixed" that well but they are still fire. Future projects are not mixed well and they are still fire. Some people argue MBDTF was not mixed that well but its still one of the best albums of the decade. The whole mixing argument is a little over-exagerrated to me. By the way based on: http://dr.loudness-war.info

Forest Hills Drive - Average Dynamic Range: 7.61
Nothing Was the Same - Average Dynamic Range - 5.625
    To p---- a Butterfly - Average Dynamic Range - 5.689

Dynamic Range is the thing that you increase when you mix s--- quieter so Mez wasn't lying. You're actually hearing more of the original recording in Cole's albums compared to the others. What has happened is that we have conditioned our self to think louder is better with modern music. I'm guilty of it too, but its not like Mez doesn't know what he's doing. If you think louder is better, cool, but thats the main difference in the mixing to me. It's not as huge a gap as y'all claim imo.

Also the sound level of FHD works on the Intro. The way that everything works in that song is mixed perfectly.

FHD closed the gap but Ali is still the best right now. Everyone I've spoken to about mixing in hip-hop brings him up. Part of the reason Kendrick projects are so unique and polarizing is the textures that Ali creates that no one else is capable of. Mixing isn't complicated in terms of making something listenable, but it takes a genius to make something unique in the way that Ali does. I'd say that Drake's stuff is mixed differently than Cole's, but his usually sounds better based on the combination of his mixing as well as the fact that his instrumentals are produced more expertly. Cole had a lot of things on Born Sinner, like Fire Squad and No Role Modelz, that were intentionally rough from a mixing perspective, similar to MBDTF and even TLOP. Kanye's stuff is more musical though, so it gets more love than Cole's, right or wrong.

In short, Kenny's albums are the best mixed in the genre, whereas Cole's and Drake's are distantly a tier below. It's hard to really give a s--- about it until you've really studied it so I don't blame you for not caring. It also depends on what kind of hardware you listen to the music. It's complicated.

Fair enough. But even on pure statistic measures, Cole's music has better dynamic range. Even with Cole's music you're hearing a broad of range of frequencies. I still believe what a lot of y'all are talking about in terms of mixing is a stylistic choice, thats why FHD is quieter. And, I care about the sound quality of music and Ali has done an incredible job taking Kendrick's song to the next level. I'm just sayin we harp on it like it really matters as much as the actual music. The Leak project by Lil Wayne with all the tracks that were supposed to be on Carter III is better than any Cole project but all of Cole's projects are cleaner and mixed better.

    Thats all I'm saying

I feel you. And if you enjoy one piece of music over another, the mixing might become irrelevant. I just view Ali as a cut above. Whereas I haven't heard anyone else doing it that's in his league. I've heard things that are mixed really well that sound s-----y because the actual music is bad and vice versa. It's hard to judge it objectively because you don't have multiple engineers mixing a single piece of music, but there are engineers who are more consistently excellent than others. Mez did a great job on FHD, but I need more consistent excellence to give him props with some other engineers that have longer running track records of great work.

TWU & FNL sound like mixtapes, and Sideline Story sounds decent. But I don't hear Mez elevating the sonics on any of them. I think he did a great job on FHD. Let's hope he continues growing as an engineer.
