I'd say having nationalist idol on the dollar bill is a bad look in general. But that's another discussion.

But my first point was that you can't give people a pass just because it was "the norm". Do some research, everyone knew that slavery was immoral, both in the north and the south. But it was just economically convenient for the US at the time so the government rode with it. Once people in the north weren't benefitting from it economically because of technology and other advancements, it became a "moral issue" and the movement to abolish slavery started. That led to the civil war because the south still depended on slaves to manage the plantation based economy. And traditional history books now tell us a cookie cutter version of the events, and that's why I think you're misunderstanding this issue.

But I'm the one who's tripping...

Bro, I know all this- even more than a lot of people I would say- lol. I'm saying people in the present would have also done the exact same thing if they were in that time period. I'm saying we're not better people than them. We can sit here in the present and say "of course it was obvious it was wrong", while ignoring the fact that we know better because we've had time to learn. Just as those in the future may wonder how this "awful" generation let climate change destroy the planet so much or how we let religion influence the government so much. We can't start saying that a majority of the people in the past were horrible people just judging them with current moral standards. It just does not make sense.

My whole previous post illustrated this but I'll say it again. THEY DID KNOW BETTER. That's the point. It served their interests so they let it happen, just like climate change and religion in government. The people in control benefitted so they let it all slide until they couldn't/didn't need to anymore. You don't give these people a pass on the grounds that they didn't know any better because thats not even true. Not that not knowing any better even matters.

Lol who said anything about giving them a pass? I said let's not judge the people of the past by today's standards. That means people shouldn't be like "This guy should not be on the dollar bill because he owned slaves or because he did not take the dangers of climate change seriously or because he was a leader of that strict Puritan society", while ignoring the fact that disqualifies a majority of people in that time period or . And saying that they did know better implies that the people of this generation are somehow better than them, magically.
