Well, it depends. I think with his recent sales and his recent hype, plus the commercial recognition throughout as one of rap's top 3, this is still currently his mainstream peak. His fanbase is as large as ever. Is he as liked as ever? idk, but he still has the largest recognition ever right now. But, if he goes ghost again and/or drops more underwhelming material, then yea it's definitely downhill from here.

I wish Cole would've taken this concept further in his album. He could've even done something like what Nas did with rapping from the bullets perspective. If he would've had one more song like Change, and another top notch song like 4YEO, and tightened up Folding Clothes, this could've been a classic. It seems Cole is always a couple things away from dropping a superb album.

agreed ... how about a song called "its mine" after immortal where he talks about the joy/love he is feeling from the money he is getting from the street life ... similar conceptually to she's mines but except would be a b-----r of course ...

and then it would flip on she's mine and he would find out what real love is :khaled:

woulda added another b-----r and more depth to the street life side of the album and also would have made the two parts of she's mine which are already dope even doper because theres is something to contrast them against and it develops another larger theme to follow through the album

how about "What's Mine?" right after for whom the bell tolls building on the depressing mood even more to start the album ...

flashback to the street guy's life when he was a kid where he is questioning how he has nothing and then that leads you to see his motives for getting into the street life because he had nothing before and had no choice

    then immortal

then "It's Mine" a b-----r where he's talking about the love of money that he feels from the street life which he's living ...

that turns the album into a rare multi-conceptual album where theres two themes which you can follow along in one single album

    classic? :khaled:

or is it too far lol?

A solid article with many valid points. Written pre-4YEO

Even though Drake, Kendrick and J. Cole are all peers and all kind of among the same crop of artists — just as you might have lumped together say Biggie, Nas and Tupac back in the 90’s — the truth is that everyone’s career progresses at its own pace, and no group of artists begins running the race to legendary from the same starting point.

I merely say that to say, it is only with time behind us that we can assess who the bigger artist was and why. In this case, not enough time has passed to get a sense of like: okay, Drake is here, Kendrick is here, Cole is here, and the reasons are x, y and z. They’re all mid-career now and were I to speculate, I’d say Drake, among them, has the most obvious chance of hitting the creative wall (like Kanye recently did), and burning himself out in the eyes of the public. But that’s a ways off.

With Cole, the funny thing is I think people don’t realize just how big he actually is. He is not quite as visible in terms of mainstream media, and as far as checking the boxes that suggest you’re a star in this day and age — celebrity friends, large social media presence, being a meme, yada yada yada — I just don’t think he spends a lot of time thinking about that, mostly because fame comes and goes like the weather, and when it all shakes out, the only thing a musician can really leave behind is the music.

So, that said, you literally have to listen to J. Cole records and go to his shows to understand just how culturally-relevant he is. He is really quite major in his own way, speaking to a fan base that is passionate and engaged — it’s something special, actually.

One last thing to consider with Cole is that, some of the reasons why he’s seemingly removed from the larger conversation is because the experience he raps about is one that the people who document the culture can’t really relate to. Writers and media people — a lot of white folks, let’s be honest — look at rappers almost like they’re cartoon characters or super heroes.

And Cole is not really that kind of artist. A lot of what he writes about is the sort of blue collar experience; not necessarily working man blues, but just like, real s--- that the average person in their twenties (or maybe even their thirties) is thinking about. In that, he’s not necessarily a super hero, but more of an embodiment of an ideal — everyday people see themselves in him.

This type of artist, not too many folks who write about music at the tastemaking level are going to relate to. Because those people don’t come from that kind of background, and if they do, they are likely trying to forget about it.

In comparison, some of what Kendrick does has more of a narrative that writers and critics can latch on to, because that Los Angeles lifestyle, that g--- s--- he speaks about (whether it’s in a positive, negative or neutral way), feels like a familiar fantasy — it’s very easy to imagine.

Drake too, a lot of things he writes about are unique to him, but also things that modern day yuppies, “millennials,” if you will, are going through. It’s not simplistic, but it’s easy to identify with.

Cole is more of a direct line to everyday America, if you ask me. Not quite as fantastical and comic-like. I don’t think his true moment of recognizance has come just yet. Maybe on his next record.

Since I correctly predicted Cole would drop again on December 9 (check the tape, I predicted Dec.9 among other dates! Still counts as a somewhat correct prediction) and I was right that Ari would drop an EP...I am going to throw a few more things out there...

By May of 2017 Lute will drop a retail mixtape and Cozz will drop an album.

This will set up Cole to drop album #5 in July or August of 2017. It'll be like FHD on roids. Worldwide tour starting late Fall of 2017...all arenas. Cole, Bas, Cozz, Lute, Ari will all be on the tour....I'm sure a couple bigger names will also be there as opening acts just like FHD tour.

More Cole to come in 2017. Just wait.

No no no you're on point. As long as the production isn't muffled like he did with the album, those extra tracks make a big difference. I would consider getting rid of Deja Vu also, even though it's good, probably better than Tiller's overall, Tiller's track was just too played out for this to come out fresh on a new album. I wish we knew what Night Rider could be like, never forget that one, could've been on it maybe before the last track, as he's contemplating life before he dies or something. Get a dope beat from Drake's producer or Canei and he's got an A1 album with all this. :lebcry:

We need momma Cole to make Jermaine let other people tweak his albums. You know the process probably goes : "Cole to IB - you know this is a dope idea, what do you think?" "IB to Cole - Yea yea that's dope. Do that." The End. :empalm:

Collab album coming later than sooner.

Cole will probably focus on helping his Dreamville artists and polishing up solo album #5 for next tour. And then it'll be time to put more focus on the collab album.
