I know exactly what you're talking about. In my experience, I have a lot of friends that have resorted to joining the army out of a sense of necessity (which I don't think it is ever someone's only option) and some of them are aware of the repercussions that go along with it and some of them seem to be after the glorified "k--- a bunch of bad guys" ideal. Even when my mom was applying for her master's program she considered joining the military in order to pay for it because she and my grandparents were not very well off financially at the time (Thank god she got into a University program). That is what I think a lot of the issues are with the military in general nowadays is that the intentions to protect freedom don't seem as immediate because there is a sense of safety for most people. Back during the world war era, there was at least some kind of sense of a call to action when those wars were going on because the opposition was clear and explicitly evil. Nowadays people join out of necessity or a false sense of vigilance.

My grandfather fought in WWII and he described his reasons for joining the military like he was Dave Chapelle's limousine driver (2:08)



He said it came on the radio that Pearl Harbor was bombed and essentially he and his friends said, "Well, it's on now." And he went down and enlisted.

Side note: His reason's for joining the army were because he couldn't swim, so he didn't join the navy, and the line for the Air Force registration was too long, so he got in line to enlist in the army. Simple logic. lol
