Its crazy how times are changing the way we view albums sales. All these new school artists like ---, Kodak and 21 savage and are selling 50-70k first week and people are calling it a crazy win. If any of the new school artists from the previous generation such as cole, kendrick, sean, meek would have done 50k on their debuts that would have been a major flop.

None of these new acts are coming close to even touching at least 150k first week and most of their sales are based on streams anyway. Uzi is meant to be doing 120k first week but only around 25k is pure album sales. That is horrible for the guy who is supposedly the star of this new mumble rap generation.

Where is the new generation of rappers who are in the mould of a drake, cole or kendrick, meek or even big sean. Its been almost 8-9 years since they've all broken out and all established themselves, and the only one who's really been in that mould is Chance in recent times.

There is a complete overload of these mumble rappers most of whom won't even been here in a few years time and nobody is coming up who's really got that balance of being able to rap real bars with a message like a cole or kendrick while still having melodies like a drake and while still having a mainstream appeal. I feel like theres such a gap in the market for a young new school artist to be in that type of lane right now and stand out from all the bs.

I know theres guys out there like Vince Staples and Isaiah Rashad who kind of fit that mould but they've both put out numerous projects and it just doesn't seem to be clicking for them in terms of buzz or fanbase. They can't even push 15k first week.

I find it odd that Kendrick tour ends September 2. No overseas tour. J. Cole's only thing going is the Made in America festival this weekend until September 29.....

Russ is cool but i just find most of his stuff so generic and surface level. I can't really hear any passion in his music

That's cause we took that 2009-2012 era for granted. Been saying that was the real Golden Age of hip hop. Chance is prolly the best one that came after 2012, but in terms of everything he is still few levels below. There is no creativity and innovation in 98% non trap artist music. Anyone can say what they want, but for example Lil Uzi Vert is pushing the genre forward more than Amine, Logic, Russ, Anderson Paak or any of these dudes that nowadays have "conscious rapper" label on em. They lack carisma and persona that Drake, Cole and Kendrick had around them. Even Big KRIT or Big Sean. For example, you have this dude JID with some potential, but is he really gonna make an album one day that can be comparable to Friday Night Lights, Section 80, So Far Gone/Take Care, Detroit, Return or 4eva? I mean, do people really believe that, or they are just saying that because he is someone new and we need those new ones to come in place of those before them? Not talking about him, but all these dudes in general. There is some really dope music nowadays but standards have dropped and what's more important, the box that every artist is in shrank. All I hear is the 808's in beats, the same snares in beats, the same topics, the same rhymes... That's the difference. Cole, Drake, Kendrick, even KRIT & Sean, all made music freely, their way. There was no formula. But yea, it's a lot deeper than just lack of artist, it's a whole another level behind the surface. In general, that's why people ain't connected to artists the way it used to be.

I agree 2009-2012 was the GOAT era for hip hop. Drake, Cole, Kendrick, Meek, KRIT, Wale, Big Sean, ASAP Rocky, 2 Chainz, Schoolboy Q, YG, Joey Badass, Mac Miller, Future and Logic all came into the spotlight with a breakthrough project during that time. All of whom are talented and have made an impact on the culture in one way or another. So many dope artists broke out in such a short space of time. Don't think we will ever see that again.

I just hope theres an 18 year old kid somewhere writing his own "Warm Up" or "Section 80" that will be at the same level or even better than those projects and will make an impact. Theres no emotional attatchment or connection with any of the new rappers who are coming out right now.

Word. But then on the other hand, sometimes I feel my age also plays factor in this. During that era I was finishing high school, starting college and still maturing as a person so everything was relate able to me. Nowadays I rarely hear some s--- that I haven't heard before and I'm like "oh s---, that's me". It's a complex thing tbh
