Alright after sitting with it a few days this album an 8/10 for me. His second best album. Miles ahead of 4YE0, but still not better than FHD for me, maybe in time that could change though.

My main 3 critiques with this album are

1. Cole could have gotten some singers to do some of the hooks. I like Cole’s singing at times, like on She Knows, Apparently, or even Kevins Heart from this album for example. But his singing ruined couple songs for me. Friends being the perfect example, fire verse but I hated the singing on the pre chorus and chorus. Same with The Cut Off. He doesn’t have to get a crazy big name feature, just someone lowkey like James Fauntleroy from Born Sinner or even Ari Lennox.


2. Also songs like KOD could have slapped so much harder if the production was better, like it was just a simple background melody with trap drums. Compare it to DNA for example, which has crazy banging production. The bangers on this album were just kind of mid level, didnt knock as hard as they could have. Again could have got co production to help with some of the “b-----r” songs.

3. Finally I don’t think he really concluded the theme of the album well. Don’t get me wrong Window Pain is one of his best ever songs but I thought he would have directly confronted “k--- edward” and it would have led up to a crazy finale were he finally either destroys his demon or directly confronts it. He didn’t really do any of that. The only solution he offered to all the problems he was talking about was to “Meditate not medicate” and that was just one line from one song.

Main highs from the album are Window Pain, Brackets, Once an Addict, Kevins Heart, KOD, Photograph , ATM and Motiv8. The verses on Brackets, One an Addict and Window Pain still gives me chills everytime. My least favourite song was Friends, even though verse was fire like I said his singing was wack and the beat was kind of boring.

Overall I’m seeing a lot of positive reaction to this album, much more positive than 4YE0. With the promo he’s doing through the NBA, him tweeting daily, the ATM video, and the discussion around his beef with mumble rappers this should have a big first week. 600k at least I think. Commercially i think it will be in between 4YE0 and FHD in terms of long term commercial success. This album was a step in the right direction after 4YE0.

Remember when Cole did the Power trip breakdown video? He played the original version with him singing the hook and said it was trash and that he had to get Miguel on it lol. Why isn’t he as self aware now of his singing as he was back then? Or he’s just too stubborn to get anyone for help.
