Lyricism doesn't carry an album for me. I can read a book if all I'm looking for is words on paper. It's important, but there are other variables. The production on T&Y is overrated, imo. I believe its only receiving notable praise because we're used to getting trash musicality from Lupe for two albums straight. Even if we're only talking lyrics, on a lot of T&Y there's a lot of unnecessary fluff that adds nothing to the subject matter.. it's just lyricism for the sake of being lyrical. On FHD almost every lyric is necessary to drive the story. I'm willing to bet that the replay value of T&Y will drastically decrease as it ages. B4.DA.$$ doesn't have that problem. Joey & Cole dropped all purpose albums, imo. Lupe... not so much. The novelty is going to wear off, you can only be wowed by top notch lyricism for so long if it doesn't touch you. I've read a lot of books. I've seen a lot of films. The ones I go back to aren't necessarily the most impressive technically; they're the ones that inspire something more. Lupe treats music like he's writing a text book sometimes, just my opinion.

Yeah I agree with u on the book approach. On the last album he came off almost too preachy and ignored his strengths like his flow and worldplay. Where he lacks compared to Cole is the emotion which is where the textbook approach is a good analogy but I still feel he carries the songs well and I didn't really get bored listening to any of the songs. He's gone back to his roots on this album and literally let off the leash but the lyricism is too over the top at times, I feel like I wanna get into the song but like every bar has a double meaning and he puts accents on it, it almost acts like a barrier. Rapgenius seems to be compulsory just to get into the story but the important thing is that there is a story there (or 5) and it will take many, many more listens to get into all the different meanings and nuances. Which is why I think the replay value will be strong imo. Personally think that this is his best produced album, the detail in all the beats are so good like the harmonica in dots and lines and sax solos at the end of body of work, makes u appreciate the work he's put into it

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the album a lot. I think it has potential to be greater than The Cool for me (the only Lupe album I regularly replay is F&L). He definitely stepped it up as an entertainer in general, but like you said there's still a disconnect that's been there on every album after F&L, imo. There's a reason why Lupe is as skilled as he is, yet still can't connect with the people. You're right about it taking a while before you fully understand the album, but then what? That's what I'm saying Lupe's music isn't digested the way music should be. You have to spend all this time trying to decipher it thennnn...? Lol, you don't go back to a puzzle after you've figured it out. The novelty wears off. The replay value may hold up for a while, but I think eventually it'll fade if you're a listener that's genuinely putting the work in to understand what Lupe's saying.
