Beat so smooth… love it. Refreshing hearing beats like this is 2022. These producers act like they scared to step out the box… using the same 808s , snares and hi hats…… y’all hear that snare on this beat???

These n----s dropping bars, and I’m over here rambling bout the beat lmfaoooo

Cole for sure. But it’s like Jordan and Pippen, Bron and DWade. No shot at Benny, he went IN

This is a pretty good take from fantano, but we all know he's never gonna give Cole higher than a 7/10 :jaydaps:

I’ve got some theories I wanna drop on y’all but I’ll start with this one. I’ve been thinking a bit about Cordae’s album, how it didn’t resonate and how his sales went down from his debut. I’ll get this out of the way, I actually like the record quite a bit.

Cordae and his career is what Cole and the fans (us) would’ve gotten if they could’ve had things their way to start the career. To this day, the best thing to ever happen to Cole was signing to the Roc and going through the struggles of that from 2011-2013.

Now many people, including myself, consider this to be some of the worst music Cole made in his career. I think that’s inarguably the case. So how could that be best thing that ever happened to him? The answer lies in artist development and Jay having the long view on Coles career. He saw in Cole what we did and pushed him harder than Cole had ever been pushed. He HAD to figure out other ways to make songs. At that point he could make your Before I’m Gones and Cost Me A Lots (classics btw) in his sleep. And if he had never been pushed, he probably would’ve continued to do so until his career tapered off. But he didn’t, and like anything else that you’re new at, he struggled to make ‘hits’. Who wouldn’t? Even Drake put out Replacement Girl and spent years underground before becoming DRAKE.

So what does this have to do with Cordae? The steaming era is a blessing and a curse for the artists and the listeners. On one hand, we get a mostly uncut look at the artists visions, which for a lot of artists is brilliant. But on the other hand, we aren’t getting that same level A&R work with the younger artists that developed them into stars that could last a decade plus.

If in 2010 Cole got to release FNL as The Sideline Story as they had originally intended, we would’ve gone ape s--- on JCN. We would’ve hailed it as a classic. Perhaps he would’ve even gotten above a 6 on Pitchfork or Fantano. But it probably would’ve done 65k (2010 numbers too!) and had no hits. And then what? What comes after that? What’s the next frontier? That period was the seed. And now here we are in 2022 and our boy is in full bloom. I turn on the radio and it’s a couple Cole songs or features an hour. He’s universally acclaimed. He can shape shift into whatever the song requires and still be the best thing about that song. He can hit you with The London and then hit you with A Lot. He can hit you with Poke It Out and then come back and hit you with the Benny verse. The man always had ‘it’ but he needed a push. And so does Cordae. And so do a lot of these Dreamville artists. And for their sakes, as well as ours, I hope they get it.

Some folks prefer gun and drug bars ad nauseam, fashionable images and bells and whistles. And anything that’s not is mid, trash or boring to them.

I get it… but I don’t think Cole ever had a period where he put out bad music, cause sideline story was a good a--- album dawg.. stg I was not disappointed at all when I first heard it.. only bad song one that album was mr nice watch (jay saved it tbr) and work out.. and I think Cole would’ve sold that much even if he put out FNL as the debut, cause I think bruh honestly had a huge fan base and was on the rise, so even with out a hit I think FNL if it was the debut would’ve did them numbers regardles, cause remember, work out wasn’t even a big hit when the album first dropped. So that wasn’t the reason the album sold so well, think music just resonated .

Now cordae, his new album was not that good in my opinion, the beats are bland , s--- just flat… like a flat soda or some s--- best I can describe it lmfaoooo. idk, something just off about it. Best songs on the album was the intro and the song with Wayne, the rest of it is forgettable lol. His first album was amazing tho. And I think the numbers just reflected that

and these times when it comes to hip hop, this s--- will never be the same, s--- just different now, than back when Cole, wale , drake , wiz, meek mill etc was on the rise. Tbr that was the last real hip hop era where n----s actually was rapping rapping. Nowadays, everybody and their mama and daddy rap and they can’t rap, s--- lame.

No doubt. I should’ve been clearer about the bad tracks I’m referring to from that period. You’re right only Mr Nice Watch and Cole World (the song, which is trash IMO) made the album. I’m taking about them plus like Disgusting, Bring Em In, Neverland, Heavy, Bad Girls Club with Wale. Those types of tracks that were attempts at ‘the single’ before he made Can’t Get Enough and Work Out. I’m sure there are many many more that’ll never see the light of day too. And to be honest, I like those tracks for what they are but I’m a Cole stan lol.

Point is, having to get out of his comfort zone and box to make those tracks then, paid off in the long term with his ability to make all sorts of songs. That’s really what I’m getting at here. Maybe a better example would’ve been KRIT. He’s had a fine career, made some great albums. But I think it’d be fair to say that he hasn’t lived up to the promise that he showed after Krit Wuz Here. I thought he was going to be the next T.I. and he just never really pushed his sound far enough to have that mass appeal, for better or worse.

You ever hear the Cole World verse over Ima Boss beat? He did it as a freestyle at some radio station before the album and I was hype AF
