Ya, nah, this song is fire and will be a hit. If this came out before Johnny Ps Caddy I think it would hit different. Give it some time.

OMG I remembering being soooo hype of this freestyle!! It’s amazing what banging production does for a verse, Cole World to this day could of been seen as one of Cole’s most popular songs.

Imagine if Pusha and Gibbs reponded to Cole’s drug and guns line. A pissed off Cole has the capability to red dot em both on diss tracks. s--- ain’t gonna happen. Just saying if it went down Cole would go at em both hard. What do they got on him? He’s boring and soft? He charged $1 for concerts? Lol Cole too good of a guy to have dirt on. And at least Cole doesn’t have repetitive content like those two.

Nice to see 4 Your Eyez Only get the love it deserves. Great concept album that I think went over a lot of people’s heads.

I’ll bite on this one. Every album he’s put out since is better than BS. Here’s why:

Cole as an artist: Cole and Ib have both said on record, multiple times, that Cole was lost during this period. That he was depressed, not himself. Naturally, this is around the same time as the infamous Versace sweater incident. I like this about BS, tbh, now that he has a big catalogue. It’s a snapshot of that time. But all the things that make J Cole, J Cole, “Touch the people how you did like before,” were missing. Again, makes it a nice addition to the catalogue but it doesn’t represent Cole as an artist, so how could it be the best?

Sonics: Is there any debating this? Mez has gotten way better as an engineer. Coles mastery of the studio and mix are leaps and bounds better than before. Even the leaps he takes on 4YEO, which people consider to be more boring than BS, are massive. Different cadences, different flows, vocal effects, panning vocals and instruments, layering vocals etc. He just kept getting better and better at this, taking his biggest leap on KOD. At the time of BS, it was pretty flat. Looped beat, drum loop with a heavy 808 on top. Verse, hook, bridge call it a day. And the mix from Mez was not dynamic whatsoever.

Concept: The execution of the concept of the album is pretty undercooked tbh. My reading of the album is that it’s a plea for empathy from his fans, to his girl, to his family to understand how and why he went from Lil Jermaine to the chain wearing, Versace sweater having rap star. I think Made Sinner is honestly a more accurate description of the albums concept. Like I came into the game with the purest intentions, but had to get my hands dirty to get from A to B and now I don’t know whether I’ll ever be pure again. TBH, this is a pretty good concept. Not amazingly executed but good. I’d put it ahead of SS and KOD in terms of it being a compelling narrative but definitely behind OffSzn, FHD, 4YEO strictly in terms of laying out a concept and then executing it well.

Classic joints and classic deep cuts: BS does pretty well here but definitely falls short of his later work in this regard. Power Trip and Crooked Smile are classics for sure. Mo Money is definitely one of his top deep cuts. But there’s some serious misses IMO and nothing approaching the level of deep cuts on FHD, KOD or OffSzn.

For studio albums, it’s gotta be:

    1. FHD
    2 a. OffSzn
    2 b. FYEO
    4. KOD
    5. BS
    6. SS

Agreed, IB said the same he would put BS 4/5.

I think my ranking is the same as yours but i might even throw KOD in at #3
