Few things after sitting with this for a while

First off I'm still not sure how this ranks compared to the rest of his discography. I think this might end up being second but I can't put this ahead of FNL. FNL's just got too many classic songs and FHD doesn't have enough standout songs so it's still better in terms of quality.

But this has way less filler and is by far his most enjoyable project imo. The variety is too dope. We get Old Soul Cole, b-----r Cole, Mainstream Cole, and New Soul Cole all in one album with no sacrifices. You can tell the boy was just free when he made this.

    The emotion of the intro>>>>>
January 28th is the best beat of his career, 03 Adolscence is the best storytelling he's ever done, he finally got his street/trap b-----r with a Tale of 2 Citiez, the singing on apparently and intro, add another dimension to his artistry.

Hopefully we get more social commentary on this next album because I definitely want more of that like the Be Free Performance Verse, but as long as he keeps identifying with the common man, which he does better than any other artist imo, he'll be here for years to come.

    This post>>>

I really rate FHD since it's the most comfortable and prominent I've heard Cole on a mainstream album, he's been slowly mastering his craft since TSS and from the looks of it he's only going upwards at this point. At the moment I still find FNL and TWU being better (nostalgia might play a big part tbh) but I'm starting to believe he can surpass the mixtapes in the near future.

We recently got a classic hip-hop station here that plays nothing but classics from the 90's and 2000's 24/7.

Nostalgia be way too strong :sad2:

I agree with a lot of this, but I honestly do find that it feels forced when he switches up this much. Like, not that it's a bad thing at all - artists should utilize whatever variety they can - but that some versions of Cole are REALLY only getting a pass from me because of the flow/production. Like the "b-----r" cole with Tale of 2 Citiez…amazing production, pretty great hook (grew on me), etc, but I can't really fully dive into what I'm hearing. It seems a bit forced and that takes me out of it. I'd rather he focused on the singing he's doing here (utilized very well), and the Wet Dreamz type s---. Like he has a gift for making great hooks when he wants too. I wouldn't mind a whole album full of Power Trips to be honest lol. And although his storytelling is much better here than usual, it's still not as engaging too me as it seems to be for you guys.

Like, I feel like you guys are engaged because you're already Cole fans, not because it's all that interesting.

    but anyways

I'd agree with this if it didn't receive an overwhelmingly positive response on KTT, Boxden, IGN and Coli too :manny:

It's just a few old SL members who weren't feeling it. But the initial response towards NWTS was lukewarm there too, so that site has been known to have a (collectively) unique opinion on projects prior to this one.

Off topic, but @Lockness is the only n----- on JCN that despises Drake as far as I know :laff:

    But he's our n----- so he's cool

I wasn't referring to the reception of the album m8, but the fact that you guys find cole's storytelling so excellent this time around, or that he's the best "every man's mc" and all that. THAT I think is due to the existing fandom, not the quality of the music itself.

I don't deny that this album has been changing opinions everywhere (but we also shouldn't let that dictate the actual objective quality of the record either…which I know you haven't).

Yeah I loved NWTS initially but it was overtime that it dropped in my eyes - I know you that lol (its as good as MCHG b f--- u). But for most people it was the opposite, they found that NWTS grew on them. But I personally find Drake more engaging than Cole when he's on point. There are only a certain type of songs I find Cole naturally appealing on, whereas Drake is more varied to me.

But aside from that, yeah my point wasn't about the quality of the album itself, but the response to some of the technical rapper-y stuff

Not too many fans on here has said that his storytelling has been excellent on FHD. Even the stans said that he's been more lyrical on other LPs/mixtapes and that he's not the best storyteller. His knack to evoke emotion and him stepping out his comfort zone a tad bid has really resonated with the fans on here. Better production has also been mentioned by a lot

Correct me if im wrong, but you speak as if the fans are ONLY praising this because of a previous predeliction for COLE and NOT because of the actual quality?? This album is a high-quality album.
