Just finished listening...and for some reason i want to listen again. The voice still bothers me and on first listen it was a bit underwhelming, but it feels like there's so many layers even just on the production side not to mention the lyrics that I feel i gotta listen at least a couple more times. Def not a bad album, im actually glad kendrick went in this direction.
Fave songs on first listen definitely these walls and how much a dollar cost. Not even going to compare to fhd but i agree with @krowned about cole being one of the best at not sounding condescending when it comes to "preachy" subjects.

Mortal Man is an incredible song. The whole back and forth conversation between Kendrick and Pac gave me chills (I'm a HUGE Tupac fan).

Other than that, I think this album needs to breathe for another 3-4 months in order to really have its value I think. It's like a complex novel that needs to be read 2-3 times and analyzed in order for it to be fully understood and appreciated.

It's definitely very admirable that Kendrick put out an album like this. He has the power in his voice to rap like the way he does, without letting his words fly over peoples heads.... mainly because you already know the amount of people that are going to analyze the f--- out of it. Glad he decided to try something like this.

Title works in two ways- kendrick being the butterfly that made it out of compton and is now being pimped out by lucy (industry, white america). On the other hand Hip Hop being seen as ruining, destroying and pimping peaceful white america (the butterfly). The irony of course is that the previously oppressed blacks are being percived to now be the oppressors.

This is shown by the cover, with a mob of Ethnics outside the White House with their foot over Uncle Sam, but the irony is that if they are profitable then they will be the ones being pimped out.

These topics are addressed on the album.

Does that make sense, rushed it a little so dont kno if im being clear lol

He references the White House and the government quite a bit throughout the album. I think K Dot's basically planning on taking over the White House and leading a revolution throughout the album. By the end of the album Pac is basically prophesying the revolution that Kendrick is preparing to lead.

    Wesley's Theory:

When I get signed homie I'mma buy a strap
Straight from the CIA, set it on my lap
Take a few M-16s to the hood
Pass 'em all out on the block, what's good?
I'mma put the Compton swap meet by the White House (He's planning on leading his n----s up to the White House and taking over)
Republican, run up, get socked out
Hit the Pres with a Cuban link on my neck
Uneducated but I got a million dollar check

    Institutionalized:
    If I was the president
    I'd pay my mama's rent
    Free my homies and them
    Bulletproof my Chevy doors
Lay in the White House and get high Lord
    Who ever thought?
Master take the chains off me

    King Kunta:

Ah yeah f--- the judge (dead judge on the cover)
I made it past 25 and there I was, a little nappy headed n----- with the world behind him (Kendrick's standing in front of the White House, which one could argue is pretty much a door to the whole world)

    Hood Politcs:

    From Compton to Congress
    Set trippin' all around
Ain't nothin; new but a flow of new DemoCrips and ReBloodicans
Red state versus a blue state, which one you governin'?
They give us guns and drugs, call us thugs
    Obama say, "What it do?"

    Mortal Man:

Pac:The poor people is gonna open up this whole world and swallow up the rich people. Cause the rich people gonna be so fat, they gonna be so appetizing, wealthy, appetizing. The poor gonna be so poor and hungry, they might eat the rich.

Kenny: That's crazy because me being one of your of the legacy you left behind I can truly tell you that there's nothing but turmoil goin' on so I wanted to ask you what you think is the future for me and my generation today?

Pac: s---, i think that n----s is tired of grabbin s--- out the stores and next it's a riot there's gonna be bloodshed for real. I don't think American can know that. I think America think we was just playing and it's gonna be some more playing but it ain't gonna be no playing. It's gonna be murder, you what I'm saying, it's gonna be like Nat Turner 1831 up in this muthafucka (Nat led the slaves to a revolt. K Dot is today's Nat)

This album is amazing!! I really do understand what you guys are saying. But man!!! The production ALONE is heaven to my ears :hovcry:. Not gonna lie, I was bored three tracks in, and was ESPECIALLY disappointed in King Kunta!! But as I got to These Walls and the words were building at the end of every track...and the transitions...:shmurda:. I think people would have loved the album more if the album dropped as a whole cuz The Blacker The Berry and i would have been sooooooooooooooo much doper on first listen. Only other negatives are the different types voices changes (will probably grow on my overtime) and the f---ing boo boo chorus!! I GUARANTEE if Cole did that hook, or some songs on this album, the slander from Twitter and someone like ODB would have been mad!:westbrook3:But n----- when it got to Mortal Man :sad2::sad2::sad2:. THE ENDING WAS PERFECT!!! Great first listen that I had to actually immediately sleep on its amazingness of first listen

In the 2020/30s we'll be looking back at these times like people look back at the 90s era now. 2010s possibly the greatest era in hip hop and we only halfway through

I know this will definitely not be the case, but...

Imagine if the collab album was a collection of remixes of each of their best songs...

Like Forbidden Fruit Remix with Kendrick verses and new Cole verses.
And P&P 2.0 with Soul Cole singing one of the hooks.

Weird, I really like this album on first listen but... something just feels like it's missing. Maybe it's that it's way too much on one tone throughout the songs, or the lack of great minimalistic bars (idk?), idk I felt bored at points. I put my best beats and listen to it fully and loud, but nah, this type of album I can't listen more than maybe three times total honestly. I can still listen to Cole's album throughout and it'll make me not want to stop, but this made me want to stop. Still a good album though, 7.7/10 for me.
