This article pretty much sums up my feelings on this whole matter. Drake has now sacrificed his license to boast about his pen game.

I disagree, you can't say his penmanship on songs like From Time isn't as good as it gets. From what the reference tracks indicate, he has had help on hype tracks with hooks and cadence. If information came out that he had help on records like Underground Kings and what not, then I would agree with you.

His credibility is in total question now. Just because we don't have reference tracks for these other songs, doesn't mean they aren't out there. All I'm saying is that, if in any capacity, you're proven to have used writing assistance then where are we suppose to believe it stops. In a musical sense, I don't judge Drake any differently. But in the scheme of hip-hop I'm questioning his credibility now. The same way I penalize Dre and Kanye and Snoop for their varied levels of written assistance, Drake has to fall into that category in terms of how he's viewed as an MC. His music isn't any less significant, but I don't think I can give him as much credit for it anymore.

That's the thing though, this is nothing like what Dre and Diddy do. Those two are producers with mic presence who get others to write complete songs for them.

Drake is capable of writing 10/10 songs like From Time and Look What You've done. Yes, the reference tracks plant a seed of doubt in terms of what Drake did and didn't write, but QM is credited on every song he had a hand in, we don't have to look much further than the liner notes. Until someone tells me he didn't write Look What You've Done, Drake is still one of the best song writers in the game.

Pure emcees like Royce Da 5'9" came out after this and told people he uses reference tracks for hooks and cadence, that's a dark road untravelled if people really want to go down it b. Rumors of Jay Electronica writing Queens Get The Money for the (in my mind) undisputed GOAT, Nas.

QM helped Drake with hype tracks like 10 Bands, I don't care about those joints. We like those songs for the performance aspect, not the penmanship.

That's just my opinion with it though, I see where you're coming from. A drop of ink in milk is still spoiled milk.

That was a real dope interview w/ Sway. He always comes prepared and keeps it real unlike Rosenberg and Ebro.

So here's my thing, cause I wholly agree with you, but is Drake even nearly in the position he's in without the hype tracks. And look at the songs he was assisted with that are mentioned in that Conplex article. Those aren't all hype tracks.

But that's not my point. My point is that Drake in my mind is more of a pop artist that an emcee because his career and his legacy are based off his hits. And the authenticity of those hits is in question.

I agree with you that From Time, Look What You've Done and records like them showcase his writing talent, but those songs have not put Drake on the superstar level he now occupies. And Drake has multiple times defended his place amongst the new school, specifically Kendrick, by referencing his sales and mass appeal. That's disingenuous to me because he wouldn't be there without all the outside help.

Cole wanted to say they've been working, he just can't. Makes sense though. Great interview, him and bklub top notch. Ebro, Rosenburg terrible & Big Boy has to be the worst

You're right, but I've never enjoyed Drake's music for his stardom I guess. I've always enjoy his music because it's legitimately great.

Drake is a pop star, anyone who thinks otherwise is tripping. But so is Kanye, and he's the best thing to ever happen to this genre in my opinion so there's nothing wrong with that.

But yeah, if Drake is knocked down a few spots on your all time because he had help on his way to the top, I can respect that.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I think guys like Kanye and Dre and Puff have served a paramount importance in the genre because of the sub-genres they've created and the artists they've either brought to the forefront or created a sound for. Drake falls somewhere in that mix of creating a lane for artists and shifting the culture. Just want him to do it in an authentic way, which he was doing early on. Now I think, as many have said, that he had too much on his plate and he needed help managing his workload. That's ok, but there are consequences.

@JRH909 to be fair, Headlines and maybe Make Me Proud were the only songs designed to be "pop" and have radio success on Take Care. I don't think it's fair to judge his ability as an emcee too harshly based off of a few radio hits on 15+ track albums. Keep in mind Cole made songs like Work Out, Can't Get Enough, Power Trip, all designed to be chart topping hits. Kendrick has fewer, only Swimming Pools come to mind, but we don't question either of their abilities as an emcee as much as we do Drake. I know the ref tracks cause concern. I wish they never existed because I would have liked to believe he was the one writing EVERYTHING, but that's just not how the industry works.

I can't deny the fact that dude is a pop superstar, but his albums are filled with tracks displaying his talent as an emcee and I think he deserves all the attention and credit he's gotten to this point. He came in the game as a rapper, gained "pop" recognition by singing, and has turned into a superstar because he was able to fuse those 2 together.
