Dope interview... Cole is just at a point in his career where he gives no f---s and we arent used to that. He is the modern Jay-z in terms of keeping it private and not wanting to be in the spotlight.

I can see him coming with music in a few months. Like the Tour will be over and he is gonna rest get married and then be like okay f---ers I'm back.

He doesnt care who is 1,2 or whatever he knows how good he is so he just want to say f--- it I'm do me.

Let's keep it real, 4 of the 5 most popular songs on his newest album has QM's "help". The 6th one has PND all over it. That's crazy. It matters

You're completely giving him a pass for not writing his own songs. Cole and Kendrick have radio hits but they wrote their own lyrics, Cole even produced his own beats on almost all of his. Swimming Pools is a troll song that flips the concept of party music on its head. Drake doesn't give me those kinds of layers in his radio records.

    But that's another discussion.

My point, which I think you're giving Drake too much of a pass on, is that he's attained (and maintained which is just as important) this level of stardom using outside help. That does not discredit him as an artist in a musical sense. He deserves credit for curating everything and executing everything. But as an emcee, he loses major points. Especially on songs that are braggadocio, which historically are meant to flex a rapper's pen game and show how lethal they are as an emcee. He's still at top tier artist but not in the context of emceeing in hip-hop.

Some of us may not give a s--- and that's fine but I do. Drake deserves a lot of credit for shaping the genre but in terms of the culture of emceeing, he's lost a lot of credibility.

That's fair, but I think saying he lost A LOT of credibility is a stretch. I'm judging based off what we KNOW. If You're Reading.. didn't make Drake a superstar, it's his 3rd best project. That's not to push it to the side, it's a great and really enjoyable album, but QM wrote a few hooks and provided a few bars on 4 songs. You're making it seem like he's had help on much more than that across his other projects. You could be right, but who's to say Cole & Kendrick haven't either? I can't knock somebody based on something there's no proof on.

Back to your main point about his stardom, Drake has had a large majority of his fans for years. Let's use Headlines for example. That song may have brought new listeners to Take Care, but songs like UGK, Lord Knows, Look What You've Done, made them fans.

I don't know where Headlines came into the discussion but that's fine, I'm not attacking the fact that he makes radio friendly songs (although his radio friendly songs are way lighter work than he's capable of). My point is more that his credibility as an emcee is in question because the songs where he was really barring on IYRITL where largely not his own work. I've heard rumblings of other people who've given him writing assistance. Just take a look at the Complex article that outlined a few of the writers that helped on NWTS. It just seems like more and more information about him getting aided on songs keeps surfacing, and that's where I'm basing my concerns.

I've been a Drake fan since Comeback season, and he's always been clever. But recently, the songs that have cemented his relevance between NWTS and Views have been outed as not his own work. Like @Lockness said, the most popular songs off of IYRTITL are largely assitsed. Like I said, maintaining relevance is just as difficult as attaining it in the first place and he's begun to waver in his authenticity in order to maintain his top spot. That's points against him.

You're clearly a Drake stan and I can respect that. I'm not attacking the quality of his music. I'm questioning his status as a top tier emcee as of the present day (especially because he claims to be the best so often).

I've fallen off with my busy schedule lately but I'm setting time aside to catch up before the finale this weekend (also I'm due for catching up on Power after I get right with TD).

TD has gotten very interesting. You won't be let down.

Only things I've seen from Power is a screenshot of LaLa's breasteses. Heard nothing but positive things about that show though.

I understand where you're coming from, but we obviously have to agree to disagree. I'm upset that those reference tracks even exist, but QM contributions to those songs were minor. Helpful, but definitely minor. He's also written for other artists before, so I can't knock his writing too much.

At the end of the day, just like you're convinced he's had help with other songs, I'm not convinced that other mainstream rappers (like Cole & Kendrick, who I love btw) don't get help with their writing as well, just look at the credits. Kendrick had 4 other writers on King Kunta and Hood Politics, and 7 on Blacker The Berry. Cole had 9 writers on No Role Modelz, 8 on St. Tropez. Realistically every rapper has help writing, just because we don't hear reference tracks doesn't mean they're writing everything themselves.

The writers you are talking about on Coles and Kendricks albums are all credited as samples and producers. Completely different than actually writing verses. In Kendrick you are talking about a lyrical genius of our generation. I doubt he needs a writer for his verses. Cole is so stubborn that he just started letting others produce for him. I doubt he would let others write his verses.

I believe Kendrick and Cole have had others write hooks for them but never verses and if I found out they had reference tracks of someone else writing their bars I would definitely be disappointed. I don't feel like reference tracks tell the full story but it's definitely disappointing.
