Born sinner is trash :laff: All jokes aside born sinner had some of coles best raps :idk: Runaway is prolly his best written song, lyrics on that s--- are insane. But from top to bottom that s--- is a chore to listen to and has ridiculously weak tracks that dont even come in the top 70 songs of his discog (chaining day, forbidden fruit, she knows, aint that some s--- etc). For an album that had goat truly yours tracks come before it, a thousand interviews explaining how good it is, moving up to compete with kanye - it was just underwhelming as h---. Not to mention Cole wasnt himself in that era too, showin up to Award shows with chains and s--- lookin like every other rapper, wore the same versace sweater as 3 other dudes at BET, he was just lost in the industry. Born sinner cole was losin himself and it showed in his music (this was also the point of the album, poorly executed tho). FHD you can put on and just enjoy top to bottom, Jan 28th is a top 5 cole song. And on top of that he was back to the cole we became a stan of. FHD era will forever be the most important phase in coles career, and born sinner era was almost the complete opposite.

Born Sinner title track alone is top 10 in Cole's career and was practically whole theme of the album summed up in one track. So I really didn't need the rest of the album to repeat the same and in the same tone with no peaks and downfalls, but there are some gems for sure. Album is nowhere near FHD tho, from production to song construction to hooks. If he dropped Born Sinner 2 type of album after Born Sinner quality wise, there would be no platinum plaque nor MSG. Facts only.

If Cole mixed the best songs from the Truly Yours along with the standouts from Born Sinner that album would have been crazy good. But I like the way his career went on and more importantly to his fans he delivered with FHD, that's more than what we could have asked for really. Soon we are about to celebrate his first platinum album I still can't believe it.

That IB interview was very insightful and a dope overall listen, he comes across as a genuinely cool and stand-up guy.

Here are some of the main points he discussed for the people who don’t want to listen to the full interview. I wrote them down mostly in the order of when IB spoke, from beginning to end, and not necessarily in chorological order relating to Cole’s career, so apologies for it being scattered. Also apologies for the long a--- post lmao.

    - The first song he heard of Cole’s was the Grammy Family freestyle from The Come Up, Cole accidently played it to him as his CD was still in his car. From there they started to grind and sold Come Up CD’s for $1 in the streets of NY. Which is where the whole Dollar & Dream idea started.

    - Janet Jackson reached out to Cole and wanted for him to feature on No Sleeep, as she was a fan of the music.

    - He says that Sideline Story was 2-4 songs away from being a much better album than it was, and mentions that Cole World and Mr Nice Watch in particular as songs they should have replaced on the album. Also looking back they wouldn’t have put already released songs onto Sideline Story.

    - However they feel no regrets on putting Work Out on the album as it opened so many doors for Cole and broke him out of the box of just being an “underground” rapper who could not make hit songs.

    - He says this is the first time Cole has felt full creative control and freedom since making the mixtapes, which is why FHD is getting such a positive response from the fans.

    - They could have did an extra show at MSG due to the demand but they wanted it to be a special one off moment for the fans, and for the next major tour they will do consecutive shows at the big venues.

    - Also Cole took a financial loss to perform there as it costs $100k more to do a show at MSG compared to The Barclays Centre, which is why a lot of major artists choose to tour at the Barclays. However Cole only wanted to do MSG for this tour.

    - Sometimes the label has trouble finding people to clear a sample, so Cole is very proactive and tracks them down himself. For example on Work Out, the original Kanye sample had a section sang by Kanye’s ex girl and nobody could locate her, so Cole tracked her down himself by searching for her details online, and then found an office work email of hers and emailed her through there to ask to clear the sample, lmao.

    - Now that Cole is a bigger artist some of the people who he sampled on FNL are coming back and trying to sue for samples, and they use the example of Cole performing those songs on tour to try and get a check.

    - Sideline Story changed the game due to the numbers it did and he mentions artists like Kendrick in particular who benefited from it, as it gave him an opportunity to drop GKMC with no smash singles prior to release and still be successful, due to the large online fan base supporting the music.

    - When making Born Sinner Cole hit a creative block and went back to his crib for a small break and came back a week later with Power Trip made, he had already fully finished the beat, the verses, ad libs, and even sang Miguel’s hook and played it for IB and Mez who told him that should be the lead single. However 75% of the Dreamville camp wanted to go with Crooked Smile as the lead single ahead of Power Trip.

    - IB came up with the idea for the Elephant Eyes Parody video as a marketing tool for Omen’s album, and it was his idea to throw the CD in the pool lmao. He also gives all the artists signed to Dreamville full creative freedom to do what they want. Omen also isn’t signed to Interscope, only Cozz and Bas is.

    - Cole and IB decided to sign Cozz after only hearing the first ten seconds of Dreams. IB says Cozz will be huge, and people connect with him like they connected with Cole when he first started.

    - He speaks on his theory on why Cole does not get celebrated at the major award shows, he states the point that the people beat the media into co-signing Cole, and Cole got to where he is through the organic support of the people, instead of a big push from major media, something which the media does not like. The fact that Cole does not attend most award shows also plays a part. He also mentions a point how a major magazine wouldn’t do a cover story for Bas and Cozz as Cole refused to do an interview for them at an earlier time. Also says a lot of high profile people in media positions are not qualified to discuss rap.

    - He says on Born Sinner you can tell Cole was still looking for recognition and points out Villuminati as an example, and says if you compare it to his other openers such as Welcome, Too Deep For The Intro & January 28th it does not connect with people the same as the those other three, as on Villuminati Cole was trying to spit as many fire bars as possible to prove to people he still got it, instead of focusing on just making an organically good song.

    - Everyone in Dreamville camp is still level headed and grounded and they never let the fame get fully on top of them since it was a gradual climb to the top and not instant success, says they still ain’t scared to make fun of or crack a joke at Cole as everyone is like family and they ain’t gassed off of Cole’s success. They don’t take anything for granted and appreciate every moment.

    - Cole texted IB when he went on his twitter rant about Future not organising his free shows correctly and told him he looked stupid, which is why IB doesn’t tweet as much now lmao. But he says he spoke with Future’s people and everyone’s cool now.

    - He says Cole has gotten too big to do the normal Dollar & Dream show and next time they will switch it up and do something different. Eventually IB wants people like Drake & Kendrick to have their own similar shows and perform Section 80 & So Far Gone.

    - Closing comments, Cole planning to do a Australia tour by the end of the year, Bas and Cozz are finishing up their own new projects to drop this later year, also Dreamville are signing a new female singer very soon to the label, to be announced by the end of the year. IB also moved out from NY to live in the outskirts of LA now.

    - Finally IB said Cole is gonna finish the tour and disappear again and come back doing what he does best , so expect a new album Summer 2017 :kobe:

1 - wat the h--- hows that makes sense? everything i know about tours is changed now don't the artists get payed the ticket revenue and what not? i thought tours were the biggest source of revenue for artists ?

2 - wonder if and how things would have been different if crooked smile was the first single

3 - really good point and so true, surprised ib realizes something like that or at least surprised he would admit it publicly

4 - same thing, surprised he would admit that publicly but all i can say is LOL :drakelaugh2:

    thanks for the summary tho

first off i disagree musically, i still like born sinner (chaining day, forbidden fruit are great songs, she knows good and even if they not top 70 in his discog thats just a testament how good his discog is not necessarily how bad those songs are) ... but anyways thats subjective so ill move on ...

the purpose of my reply is just to say something that has been said at least a few times before and thats just that the negativity of the born sinner era (even tho theres a lot of positive that came from it too and u still can't deny it did great things for his career - going against kanye in particular) is what allowed everything positive after it to be

and maybe one day ull come around on the album musically, maybe not, but the fact remains that there are many people who going back to it say they didn't realize how good of an album it is ...

Cole World did what it had to do, sold a lot to show cole and his fans are a force and he here to stay ... musically didn't deliver but didn't disappoint the fans enough to turn them off ... work out probably still his biggest mainstream hit to date and all in all he just got that monkey off his back of putting out his debut album ...

Born sinner was his chance to really build an album from the ground up without having to worry about singles and the pressures of putting out a debut album ... but you could tell the industry stuff and the disappointment of his first album was still weighing on him too much ... despite this he was still able to put out a solid album and build upon his success and popularity especially with the kanye competition - still didn't do enough for everyone to get on board but enough for no one in their right mind to write him off just yet ... ALL IN ALL YOU CANT SAY HE WENT BACKWARDS FROM COLE WORLD and really thats all that counts is constant movement forward because it all leads to ...

FHD is just him staying true to himself 100% and the results speak for themselves ... still arguably not the classic we all waiting for from cole and definitely still not his magnum opus imo but the movement is now UNDENIABLE and even though it still wasn't enough for the critics to start praising him or crown him just yet, the people love it and EVERYONE is waiting on what he will deliver next

i love forbidden fruit but its just crazy to think how much music cole and kendrick have together and this is all we have to show for it

its kind of what makes it dope too tho cause it at least confirms they have in fact been in the studio together LOL

like seeing big foot tracks in the forest or the lockness monster or jay electronica

like u know these things have to exist cause theres so many facts that point towards their existence :hehehe: ... but u just never know if they will ever expose themselves to the world n see the light of day
