    Silver Jews - American Water
"Boy You Look Like Someone I Used To Know"
Oh boy. Just to let the cat out of the bag early, I love this album. I've loved it since I heard it for the first time nearly a year and a half ago. "Buckingham Rabbit" was actually one of, if not the last song I listened to in 2023. I'm not sure if any of y'all experience this as well, but there are certain records that I listen to during a period of my life, and they become near inseparable from said time in my memory from that point forward. This applies to a lot of albums (including my former picks in this club) and American Water is no exception

I think that one of AW's biggest strengths is it's simplicity. The instrumentation feels very laid back and i honestly feel very relaxed when listening to it. It kinda reminds me of Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot when it comes to the mood that they put me in. Weird comparison, I know. Of course there's also a Pavement-esque feeling throughout it, which isn't a surprise considering that Stephen Malkmus is literally a member of both Pavement and SW. I think the best example of how great the instrumentation is would be Night Society. Considering the fact that it has no vocals throughout, the listener gets to fully take in how the instruments sound by themselves.

Then there's the lyrics. I have to admit that I was already aware of David Berman's suicide prior to listening to this record, The reason that I mention this is that I think that this knowledge might make me look at this record a bit differently than I would if I went into it completely blind. It's kind of like how the experience of listening to David Bowie's Blackstar after his death paints the album in a different light. As such, the album's lyrics give me a very melancholic vibe. There are some really killer lines on this record (The entirety of Random Rules basically lives in my memory rent free), but I can't help being a bit sad when listening to it. Berman's voice also works perfectly for the vibe that this record is going for. It's simple, but it's filled with so much emotion.

So yeah, I love this record. I've already listened to Berman's last album Purple Mountains, but I might finally check out The Natural Bridge after having it saved on my library for nearly 2 years. Big thanks to @stepdad enjoyer for the pick and yeah.

I can perfectly visualize Marsh joining AOTWClub, participating, suggesting MMLP2 Deluxe as his pick before he abandons the group

Marsh is not built for this thread. Imagine him having to listen to music that isn't eminem or top 40 songs. Every review would just be "this was boring"

Smile 2: The Skye Riley EP

This one will be short. Nothing much to say about it other than interesting choice to go with an EP of some random forgettable movie lol

I think the songs were pretty good.

Best: Grieved You, Blood On White Satin, Death Of Me
    Worst: New Brain

For the last pick before the upcoming mixtape rotation, I decided to go with my personal favorite. The album I am picking is non other than

American Water by the Silver Jews

    IMG_1086.jpeg

Silver Jews were an indie rock band from New York City, the mastermind behind this group was the late David Berman, a songwriter, composer, and a poet whose work influenced dozens of indie folk and rock acts. I will not talk about the album because it is best for everyone to go into this blind, but let’s just say that if indie music, with a touch of country-rock mixed in, sounds appealing to you - this project could have some memorable moments.

I’ve been a fan of David Berman for a looong time, after Silver Jews disbanded, he took a long hiatus and came back to music in 2019. His new project was called Purple Mountains. Couple months after this band’s debut, Berman took his own life. Although the Purple Mountains album featured some of his best writing and performances since his initial run, it now sounds like a suicide note of a man who knew exactly what his fate would be. RIP.

Hope you guys enjoy this one, my review of the Smile album will be posted by tommorow!

    Skye Riley - Smile 2
    [IMG]

This was really weird project for me. It's not uncommon for me to listen to film soundtracks/scores, but usually I only listen to them if I've actually watched the film. I have not watched Smile or Smile 2. The only knowledge I have about the films is the marketing campaign behind the first one which was cool, i guess.
But if I'm being perfectly honest, the films just don't appeal to me. So as you can expect, listening to an EP comprised of music from a film that I have little to no knowledge about, is going to be weird. Naomi Scott AKA Skye Riley is not a singer that I'm very familiar with. The only thing that I've seen her in was the Power Rangers reboot I forgot even existed, and I never saw any of her Disney Channel work either. As a singer though, she's fine. Not incredible, but she clearly has talent. I do have to say that my biggest issue with this EP is the production. It's not bad, but I kinda just felt it was a bit bland. Like, Naomi's voice is good, and her lyrics are decent, but the production did little to elevate it, at least in my opinion.

Overall though, I just don't really have any strong opinions on this EP. I didn't hate any of the songs, but I can't say that I truly loved any of them either. The short runtime definitely helps its replayability, but I feel that the quickness of the songs also hurts their staying power. This project as a whole is just a bit too middle-of-the-road for me. Overall though, thanks to @Michael Myers for the pick and yeah, that's about it.

Skye Riley & Naomi Scott - Smile 2: The Skye Riley EP

Best tracks: Grieved You, Blood On White Satin

    Worst track: New Brain

    RIPPER ROO’S RATING: 5/10

This EP is giving Lady Gaga, Tate McRae, Taylor Swift, Gracie Abrams, and even The Weeknd. I assume the derivative nature of this project is intentional, but the problem is sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. It’s pretty obvious why Grieved You and Blood On White Satin were released as singles because they are by far the best songs.

New Brain sucks man, straight up. It’s the most generic “I’m going insane” song I’ve ever heard. It sounds like it was specifically designed for edgy 14 year olds, these lyrics make me cringe. It sounds like they had Chat GPT write a song about going insane, it’s very surface level. This song massively weighs the EP down and with only 5 songs (the 6th is just a piano version of a previous song) that really affects the score.

The way Just My Name is mixed kind of reminds me of The Weeknd from After Hours. I kinda like it, but it also just kinda makes me wish Lily Rose Depp made her own individual EP with the help of The Weeknd during The Idol show because I feel like that would’ve been a much better executed version of the EP we have here right now.

I like the singing on this album though and there is some definite catchiness here. I did add some of these songs to one of my playlists. Death Of Me is okay, kinda feels like another Lady Gaga song. If this EP was just Grieved You, Blood On My Satin, and Death Of Me I’d probably give it a 7/10 but unfortunately that’s not the case. Not a terrible project though! @AOTWClub

    @Justin Trudeau @AOTWClub

First off want to say interesting pick @Michael Myers! being that I'm a movie freak I didn't even think about opening the avenue to this kind of music so I'm happy you went outside of the box a little

I haven't watched Smile 2 yet so idk if I'm missing any context outside of the basic plot of the movie and the main character being a pop artist.

I don't have too much to say than it's pretty inoffensive retail store sounding pop knock off of Lady Gaga and a couple other people, it falls into some pitfalls that I don't like about pop vocal production sometimes but I didn't hate this at all. A couple melodies were kinda try hard but Naomi Scott has a decent voice and I hear good things about her performance in the movie. The most glowing praise I can give this is I wouldn't be mad if a couple of these songs were in the playlist at my restaurant lol

It's so hard not becoming the rock and metal guy when I want to choose albums I love that y'all might not have listened to but have a shot at liking and it ends up being mostly rock or metal cause I'm afraid to go off the deep end with hyper pop bs lmao. I have a few curveballs in mind after the mixtape rotation though so I'm excited!

Rap is my main genre I know the most about so I’m usually more critical of that genre when we review rap albums here when compared to something like a rock album

I've enjoyed all of Allis' picks so far though (Yesterday is one of the best songs ever written)

    Discovery - Daft Punk REVIEW

    Score: 9.0

    Review:
Daft Punk as a group I have always heard music from from pretty much everyone BUT themselves (besides Get Lucky with Pharrell). Like Stronger by Ye, Circo Loco by Drake & 21, so on so forth. I knew their influence and the songs that got sampled to make the songs I named, but I never heard the original versions and if I did it wasn’t more than a couple times. This album was f---ing fantastic, I’m definitely a fan now. I see why this album always gets brought up in conversation as one of the best ever now. GREAT pick @Yeez
