Jul 4, 2024Clairo - Sling
As someone who used to be very involved in music twitter (this was around 3-4 years ago) I heard about Clairo a lot, but I never really checked her music out. I don't know why, but I didn't expect that this would mainly be a Singer-Songwriter album but I was pleasantly surprised. The production really surprised me especially, and it reminded of Lana Del Rey's NFR at some point (Jack Antonoff has production credits on 6/12 tracks so that might be why) The lyricism was more melancholic than I expected and the whole album has a very chilled out vibe and I'll definitely check out her new album when it drops next week.

hargydon’s Review of Sling
The album appears to have 2 central themes — family & the music industry. The Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers comparison is quite appropriate, seeing how the album appears to be delving into her conflict/inner battle with self throughout.
Amoeba hook is heat, for some reason Wade really gives me The Zombies vibes, something like Care of Cell 44. Blouse is a powerful feminist anthem in her expression of the struggle between wanting to progress in the industry but having to push through the objectifications for the end goal, trying to reason with herself that the ends justify the means. Reaper was extremely poignant, engaging with the dark realisations of the circle of life, the challenges a woman faces especially in her 20s on the choice of motherhood, & how despite it being a personal choice, society can still persuade the decision based on judgement.
However, just like Lorde’s album we had as part of the AOTW, Jack Antonoff’s production style for me really takes away a lot of the edge of the artists he’s working with. Compared to Immunity sonically this just feels like something’s missing, there’s no spark, from the vocals or the majority of the instrumentation. The writing from Clairo majorly carries this project. I think me & Mr. Antonoff need to settle this with a street fight.
I love the vulnerability in the writing, she’s still got the soft-spoken charm, but it doesn’t give me the same energy, catchiness & vibe as Immunity, so that still remains my favourite Clairo project.

Clairo - Sling
I will start by saying this is NOT my genre of music, but I still enjoyed it for what it is. However, I also just don’t have much to say about it, it was just a good listen and experience. I don’t really have any songs that stuck out to me as favorites, but I also don’t have any that stick out as bad. Not sure if I see myself coming back to this but I do appreciate the recommendation and listen @Ripper Roo . It’s definitely nice to hear something different than what I usually listen to!

Clairo - Sling
Standouts: BLOUSE, JOANIE, Partridge, Little Changes, Management
Skips: No hard skips but if I wanted to be nitpicky I'd say Bambi (I feel like it overstays its welcome a bit)
Score: 7/10
Final Thoughts (Skit): I don't usually enjoy artists who use whispery or soft delivery but I really liked this s---, thanks to this club I could listen to some s--- I would have never looked for on my own, some of the lyrics hit especially hard and on the whole it's a very relaxing album with very pleasing instrumentals, so relaxing and pleasing in fact that this'll be the white noise I use to fall asleep to for a while (I don't mean this in a bad or sarcastic way at all).
This album on the whole accomplished one thing, I might check out her new s--- if I'm in the mood for this type of sound, that would've never happened before otherwise
So, to sum up, I wish I could f--- her voice, since f---ing sound is impossible, I'll have to make do with her mouth
@Ripper Roo Appreciate the pick, I wanna say again that I would have never found this on my own and I'm glad I gave it a couple of spins
(I was between a 6 and a 7 but since the school system brainwashed me and left me a slave to the "7 is good enough to pass" s---, I decided to finally give it a 7 to emphasize that I liked it more than "ok")

Clairo- Sling
Fav Tracks: Harbor, Amoeba, Blouse, Just for today,
Least Fav Tracks: none
Right out the gate, Clairos voice is very impressive. I really like that the album has a pop but folk vibe. Sounds way different than the popular pop music, I much prefer when artists stay true to themselves rather than try to make smash hits.
There were no songs I truly disliked, that being said it's not something I'd constantly return too or listen to often. But I do think some day I want some easy listening I'd throw this on. I found it a nice listen and Clairos got a really good voice.
Favorite Lyric from the album: " As we speak im here to meet devils for tea, peering round the corner of my life, I throw My drink into the faces of my demise"
Rating: 7/10 (I feel like I rate pop albums a bit easier than hip hop ones lol but I did enjoy this as much as the Lorde album)

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Clairo - Sling
I was originally going to pick Immunity, but Sling didn’t get the attention it deserved. I think it will be a nice change of pace for the group. Some of you may have seen my thoughts on this album already in various posts throughout the forum, but I’m not going to say much about it here yet until some reviews come in because I don’t want to influence anyone’s thoughts on this album. I think it’s best to go in blind like I did. I hope you enjoy it! @AOTWClubOrdinary Joel, Yeez, Jimmy Jazz and 5 others like this. -

@AOTWClub
This is my first Three 6 album and I'm a bit mixed on it even though I mostly enjoyed it, I will say most of my criticisms aren't of just this album but this era of era in this lane in general.
I enjoy southern rap but a lot of full projects can feel tiring when they're over 20 tracks with a similar vibe throughout, everyone did their thing tho, especially Project Pat and Gangsta Boo.
Favorite Tracks: 44 Killers, Sipping On Some Syrup, I'm So Hi, M.E.M.P.H.I.S., Just Anotha Crazy Clikc (the ICP parts s--- but its chaeming lmao), and Who Run it. I also think the What's Next skit is a cool way to announce release windows for albums.
Verdict: it's a very fun album but the length and repetitive subject matter and flows can make it a bit tiring.

Three 6 Mafia- When the Smoke Clears: Sixty 6, Sixty 1
favorite songs: touched it wit, who run it, tongue ring, So HI
Least favorite: take a bump, where da cheese at
all in all I enjoyed this album but in my opinion the project would be better if they cut some of the filler songs, it gets kind of repetetive and doesn’t do much for me at times, with that said, the highs are really high and they remind me of why the memphis sound goes so insanely hard when done well.
Saved some of my favs on a couple of playlists I have and I’m looking forward to bumping along. I love the production, I love how dynamic it is, the chemistry they have elevate these songs to a whole new level and definitely explains why they’re so highly regarded. My only real complaint is caused by the feeling of repetetiveness, I feel like there’s an insane 10 track album hiding under the filler, but to each his own - music is subjective.

Janky's turn @AOTWClub
Favorite Songs: Liability, Green Light, Sober, The Louvre, Writer In The Dark, Sober II
Least Favorites: Hard Feelings/Loveless, Liability (Reprise)
My least favorites aren't bad songs by any means but they feel like the weakest.
I'm pretty biased towards Lorde's first two projects cause they hit me at the right time so imma keep it short and sweet (that was a f---ing lie). This is one of the better Jack Antonoff produced albums and my favorite frequent collaborator of his, I really like most of the beats and here and they're quite catchy. I also really love her voice, she has a great sense of melody that fits her raspier tone imo.
I think it could be hit or miss for some people but I really like most of the writing, it can feel a bit wordy for the sake of it but I find that it feels different for the genre and lyrics like "we'll end up painted on the road, red and chrome, all the broken glass sparkling. I guess we're partying" is such a f----- and vivid description of dying in a car crash on a somewhat regular party song that it does a good job at painting a vivid image and providing a good counter balance so it's not too bubblegummy while tying in to the more depressive songs later on.
Even the line that @Ripper Roo brought up "Megaphone to my chest, broadcast the, boom, boom, boom, and make 'em all dance to it" can be a bit corny but i enjoy something slightly more obtuse like that more than blatantly saying "I MAKE CATCHY PERSONAL SONGS FROM THE HEART"
I go back and forth on whether I like this or Pure Heroine better but they're both good for equally similar and different reasons.
