Mar 11, 2025Like I’ve said before, I don’t take any of these scores personally lol
True, I have noticed over the years we usually agree on rap tastes and topics. When I made my tape I was listening to a lot of pop at the time and not as much rap so it kinda reflected that. I definitely gotta do a more rap heavy tape at some point
Ah s--- thanks for letting me know, I’ll change the color

Big respect for not holding the low score i gave your tape against me lol.
Although I hate pop music, I feel we have similar wide- ranging taste in rap music so you would have easily got a big score if your tape was a compilation of rap songs.

Favorites: Symmetry, Carefree, (How Could Anybody) Feel at Home, Fresh Prince, Dead or Alive, Deeper
RIPPER ROO’S RATING: 10/10!!!!
No complaints or notes about this tape. It's a compilation of good or great hip hop songs. The vibes is immaculate on songs like Symmetry, Carefree, and Fresh Prince. The hook on Dead Or Alive is a big highlight for me, that one is explosive.
I appreciate the lyricism on Deeper, I appreciate the storytelling on the Open Mike Eagle song. There's different types of rap on here so it doesn't get boring. Babyface Ray and Veeze are wavy. The other songs I didn't mention are good too. s--- like this is why rap is my favorite genre.

Appreciate you guys staying involved in aotw for almost a year now.
Been easy to do this since you guys consistently stay involved.
I definitely wasn't thinking this would work since S80 doesn't stay busy unless an Eminem album is releasing.
Anyways it's looking more and more like 70s-80s will be our mixtape genre. I wouldn't mind throwing 90s in there too, but that's up to you guys?
Also i think the age difference between users on here helps with the variety of music, which definitely makes things interesting.
Tomorrow ill post the upcoming schedule which will go in the same order as last mixtape.
Also i will be MIA from Wednesday Night until Sunday Afternoon, my Trump defending southern Lover is flying in to see me for a few days (shes not that brainwashed by Donny, she seems to be seeing the light lol)
So anyways I'll be catching up on Reviews posted Thursday fri sat on Sunday when I get back to Canada

Jokes aside, the mix of people from different ages/backgrounds is what creates variety with these picks
This club has become a good reason to visit the forum and discover new music.
Had to use a Spotify playlist downloader for most mixtapes so far. It only lets you download each song individually. Having a youtube link definitely made things easier.Justin Trudeau, Michael Myers, jankland and 4 others like this. -

The Desolation of Jim Jazz
This mixtape has a unique vibe of cultivated taste and sophistication. Most of this music falls outside my usual preferences, but I've been making an effort to expand my musical horizons and appreciate sounds beyond my typical niche
I really enjoyed the vibe on Empty Stomach Space Cadet. Same goes for the Gorillaz track, especially the second half when the beat kicks in with the vocals. The second song on the mixtape by Parquet Courts was definitely a highlight for me, along with Baby Criminal.
Favorites: Baby Criminal, Almost Had to Start a Fight / In and Out of Patience, Alone, Together, Empire Ants, Empty Stomach Space Cadet
Least favorite: Jimmy Jazz (No offense to the username lol) and Born Under Punches.

Jimmy Jazz - The Desolation of Jimmy Jazz
"Jimmy Jazz? He ain't here, but he sure went by"
I was beyond excited to listen to this tape. I was already a fan of a large majority of the artists on here, and the rest seemed very intriguing. I had to wait to listen to it due to having to study for a midterm, which I probably s----d at, but at least I was finally able to dive in.
Here is the track by track (please excuse my yapping)
- Baby Criminal- I’d heard about VB before, but this was my first song from them. I f---ing love the energy. Gotta check out a problem from them soon.
- Almost Had To Start A Fight/ In and Out of Patience- Never heard of this artist before. Good track though, fits well right after the last one
- Jimmy Jazz- Great track from an incredible album. I was a bit surprised to see that some members didn’t know this is where JJ’s new name is from (RIP stepdad enjoyer), but then I realized that London Calling is 45 years old, so it made more sense.
- Alone, Together- Same as track 3, great track from a great album.
- Born Under Punches- Holy s---. f---ing incredible song. As someone who listened to RIL on repeat for years, I did get used to it being that project’s intro, but I think it still works great here.
- Crabs In A Bucket- listened to BFT for the very first time earlier this week so this track was fresh in my mind. Great track. Like with BFT as a whole, I was surprised to hear the UK Garage sound of the instrumental, but as someone who recently got really into Burial, it was an absolute treat.
- Empire Ants- What can I say about Empire Ants that hasn’t been said before. PB is one of my favorite records ever, and this track has always been a highlight. Yukimi Nagano’s vocals are amazing and the instrumentation… dear god. Damon Albarn (or 2-D technically) does a great job as well.
- Sea Ghost-Never heard of this artist before this tape, so another new discovery. I was a bit worried by the recorder at the beginning, but I liked it.
- Distance- I’d heard a couple tracks from AJJ’s sophomore album (back when they were known as Andrew Jackson Jihad), but not much else so this was new. It was good, but I wasn’t over the moon with it.
- Teeth Like God’s Shoeshine- Been meaning to check out Modest Mouse for a few years, but I haven’t gotten around to it. Good track overall I’d say.
- Half Sister- Hadn’t heard about this artist before. Amazing track, although I wish the singer’s voice was mixed a bit higher. RYM has this album very highly rated, so I might check it out at some point.
- The Calendar Hung Itself- Pretty good track
- Trying To Explain- Good track. Definitely the most mellow so far, but has a very good vibe.
- Empty Stomach Space Cadet- Similar to Viagra Boys, I’d definitely heard about King Krule, but I had no idea what his music sounded like. I expected like.. harsh metal or something from the name. I didn’t even know he was British! Definitely not what I was expecting from the name, but I liked it quite a bit.
- WHAT’S GOOD- Already familiar with this track beforehand. Been a fan of Tyler for a while, but I do feel like IGOR is his creative peak, at least in my opinion. Great track, slowthai’s part while small, is pretty good.
- 30- Great closer from a great project. Can we say that --- is underrated? Not sure. I do agree with Allis’ view that having 30 at the end of a primarily alt-rock tape was unexpected, but I like the track a lot.
FAVORITES: (Not gonna include the tracks I was already familiar with) Baby Criminal, AHTSAF/IAOOP, Half Sister
RATING: 9.5/10

The Desolation of Jim Jazz:
I knew I was gonna very much enjoy this and I wasn't wrong! It ended up being a collection of a lot of artists that I've been meaning to listen to more of which was nice
Baby Criminal much like the rest of the small sample size I've heard from Viagra Boys is very fun
We got off to a strong start early cause the Parquet Courts track was one of my favorites, I don't think I ever heard of them but I need to dig in more cause I adored the sound.
Jimmy Jazz was making me laugh cause I was so confused about what the username change was and I finally have an answer lol. Not one of my favorites of the bunch but still solid nonetheless.
Alone, Together was super great, The Strokes is another band that completely hits my blindspot which is very funny cause it seems like I'd be very into them.
I know a bit more about Talking Heads but still a loose knowledge that falls apart aside from some cursory information and a handful of songs, that being said Born Under Punches was another song I absolutely loved. I need to stop procrastinating and actually listen to more of them.
A fellow Big Fish Theory song chooser and it did not disappoint, Crabs In A Bucket is a great one and even though Vince Staples is great in general BFT is the most Jankland-coded of his discography. I wish more rappers were comfortable trying that kind of production.
I thought I wasn't going to like Empire Ants for the first minute or so, it wasn't bad or anything I just don't think I was in the right mood for Damon's parts, my opinion 180'd during the Little Dragon feature (another group I need to get to) by the end of it I really liked it.
Seas Ghost is awesome, beginning with a shanty a--- instrumental into a punky song was super fun. I've been in the mood for a lot of this kind of music and adjacent stuff so I'm happy I got a playlist of a decent amount of it. Wasn't familiar with The Unicorns but now I want to be!
Once again on bands I need to get to, I've had an AJJ album saved for a long while and haven't gotten to it, Distance was great though, vocals and pretty mood dependant for me but they scratched my ears right when I was listening, I can see this portion of the playlist be where it starts to get iffy for some others due to the vocal stylings but I quite enjoyed it.
Teeth Like God's Shoeshine was cool, took a second for me to warm up to it but the second half grabbed me. I always think it's funny how hard the whiplash would be for people who only know Float On lol
I'm not familiar with Protomartyr but Half Sister f---ing rules, equal parts entertaining and interesting lyricism that I want to dig into more over a great instrumental, idk if they do mostly this poetry kinda delivery but I thought it worked really well here and ended up being a big highlight!
I can see myself liking The Calendar Hung Itself more in the future with more listens but for some reason Bright Eyes always takes a bit to click with me even when I know what to expect, I still think it's a good song but there was a slight disconnect i can't place my finger on that I know will go away eventually.
They're relatively short tracks but the Matt Elliott song was very pretty, I'm not familiar but I liked it acting as a little interlude and loved the sound which flowed together nicely into Empty Stomach Space Cadet, King Krule another band I need to dig into. I loved the hazy feeling instrumental and vocal delivery, a very good back to back selection in terms of flow which is why I grouped them together. I'd say the whole taped flowed pretty well but these in particular felt like sister songs to me.
Not much to say about What's Good, it's good! Lol. Tyler rarely misses
30 is a very fun closer, not used to Danny Brown sounding that aggressive on parts but it could be my ignorance to a lot of his discography, I heard great things about this album and I finally need to jump in.
Conclusion: this f---er made a great skateboarding playlist which is a positive attack on my taste
