Jun 24, 2024I feel like I've let you all down this week, I only listened to this twice as Why Lawd! took up most of my listening time which itself has been less this week.
Overall I enjoyed the project but not as much as other Three Six Mafia's stuff. I'm terrible with track names, even after 10 spins! So can't really mention highlights or lowlights. Although there was one song that was annoying with a phrase that I can't even remember now being repeated through the whole thing.
They had a winning formula and I'm disappointed with myself that I found out about them late in my life. Shout out to @Wreckless for introducing me to them in one of our lives listening sessions we used to do year years ago.
So yeah, s--- review - sorry.
Score 6½/10 as I enjoyed it but not enough to prioritize it.

f---ing b-----r, love this s---. Three 6 Mafia has been in my life for as long as I can remember, growing up in Tennessee, so this sound has always been special to me. Three 6 were truly ahead of their time and it shows with this highly influential project. b-----r after b-----r, really only 1 super weak track to me across the 19 songs on here, that track being Barrin You b------s. Sippin On Some Syrup, Tongue Ring, Who Run It, all legendary tracks that happen to be on this album. Like most of y’all have been saying, this album does suffer from having too many tracks, and if the weaker ones were left out, this project would probably be a 9 or even a 10 for me. It was very rare that I wasn’t nodding my head while listening to this album. Fun music all around that will always get you amped up. Legendary s---, hoping I can see Three 6 and Yela in concert together in Huntsville in a couple months.
RIP Gangsta Boo, Lord Infamous, and Koopsta
Thanks for the pick @Omar Little !

Three 6 Mafia - When the Smoke Clears
OVERALL RATING: 8/10
I’ve always been a fan of this Memphis sound. It’s a classic, timeless sound that almost never gets old. I’ve heard plenty of Three 6 Mafia songs but never listened to a full album. For the most part, this album was fun to listen to and nearly every song was a b-----r. As I was making my way through this album I honestly thought it would be a 9/10.
However, as the album went on it started to wear on me. While I like the repetitive nature of a lot of the songs, sometimes it got too repetitive (Act Like You Know Me). That coupled with the fact that this thing is a whopping 22 tracks starts to get tiring after a while. I also didn’t care for the skits.
Despite all that negativity, I simply like this sound too much to give it a bad score. I guess I have a soft spot for it. Perhaps if the skits and some songs in the latter half were removed, this album could be a 9/10 for me. Unfortunately that’s not the case and like I said the album started annoying me towards the end so I gotta go with 8/10 instead.

Standouts: Sober, Liability, Hard Feelings/Loveless
Skips: Supercut
Score: 7/10
Final Thoughts:
While I don’t listen to pop music that often, I really enjoyed ‘Melodrama’. Which isn’t surprising as I also enjoyed ‘Pure Heroine’ when it came out. It's emotionally powerful and well-produced, as well as somewhat experimental. Lorde's singing is captivating; her voice feels genuine and personal. The album has a good mix of catchy pop and deeper, more artistic songs. However, the transitions between high-energy tracks and slower ballads can feel abrupt, and the themes feel repetitive at times.
Overall, while it's not something I see myself returning to, Melodrama is a solid album that shows Lorde's growth as an artist. It's worth a listen for both new and long-time fans.

OVERALL SCORE: 7/10
FAVORITE TRACKS: Webbie Flow, Cilvia Demo, Ronnie Drake, Sililoquy, Shot You Down
LEAST FAVORITE TRACK: Tranquility, West Savannah (I wanted to like it I dunno, find it kinda boring)
NOTES:
Isaiahs flow is great
The songs I like I really like, the songs I don't I really don't like them.
Production is nice, I like a lot of the beats
The Beat on Sililoquy is hard as f---
Wish Kendrick would have been on Shot You Down

Final Thoughts (Skit):
I'll only go into more detail if I feel like it's necessary
Also, I'll only use integer numbers for scoring cause I could never tell the difference between a 7.5 or 7.3 lol, ofc I know a 7.5 means it's better than a 7.3 but c'mon, when it comes to scoring unless you're doing some type of calculation I don't see how you can give an album an 8.4 instead of just an 8 imoLast edited: May 20, 2024Minato, BornSinner, Ordinary Joel and 6 others like this. -

When The Blood Burns...
@AOTWClub
@Justin Trudeau
Quick review because I don't have much time this week.
I heard maybe a third of these before. I'm a big REM and Television fan, I was initially planning on putting some of their songs on my tape but I knew someone would beat me to it
The songs I never heard before were mostly amazing. My one issue is a me problem; I don't usually enjoy songs with non-english singing. My favourite part of music is vocals and lyrics, so not understanding them makes it less enjoyable (except when it's Carti or Thugger). Overall, excellent tape and I added a few new songs to my playlists. It was structured pretty well with similar styled songs grouped together. Bonus points for trying to add lesser known songs
Exuding the foreign language songs would have been close to a 10 but I will give this a
8/10

Coming up with a theme was a bit harder this time around. I took Allis’ criticism to heart and tried to find some artists maybe that maybe aren’t as well known. I’m not sure that I really succeeded in that regard. Truthfully, my music taste is quite basic, but I think the songs themselves aren’t too well known (aside from one or two exceptions). I tried to come up with a loose theme, so I guess just think of this record as a Frankenstein’s monster of a playlist that’s partly romantic/depressed/horny/whatever else you can think of. Without further ado, I present to you…
When The Blood Burns...
- Silver Morning (1983) - Brian Eno
- La Grasa de las Capitales (1979) - Seru Giran
- Fun House (1970) - The Stooges

- El borrego (1994) - Cafe Tacvba
- Sueles Dejarme Solo (1990) - Soda Stereo
- Группа крови [aka “Gruppa Krovi” or “Blood Type”] (1988) - Kino
- Tell Me When You Need It Again, Pts. 1 & 2 (1977) - The Isley Brothers
- A Tear for Eddie (1994) - Ween
- Eternal Life (1994) - Jeff Buckley

Wreckless - Born to Boomer
Excellent mix tape. I recognized a lot of artists but wasn't familiar with most of these songs. Very good effort finding lesser known songs from this period. I liked how you kept to a hard rock theme. Hard rock isn't my favourite type of music , with a few exceptions, mainly because the vocals are often generic without any distinctiveness. But this did a great job keeping my interest. There were a few songs I wasn't a fan of including Christian women and the paradise lost songs, other than that this was a near perfect tape.

I AM MUSIC:
I'm actually gonna keep this one short cause I think my thoughts on this record are relatively cut and dry.
I think it's too long and it kinda grew off me the more I listened but it also made me like Carti more than I previously have, after this album finished songs from WLR came on and I found myself having a much better time listening to those than I did when I first heard that album.
I don't think this subgenre is super for me but I'm always willing to give it a chance and I got a handful of decent songs on here which I'm happy with!
As negative as this sounds so far I didn't hate the album, I have appreciation for the style and Carti helping carve out a new style of rap is cool whether you like it or not, a lot of the beats on here are crazy and when Cartis vocals or cadences work for me they really work.
I think the Thug and Uzi tracks are overhated, I'm not an avid listener of those two either so I might not know what people wanted from them but I thought they were both solid. The Kendrick features were fun albeit a little out of place feeling on songs like Mojo JoJo but it really worked for me on Backdoor which is one of the best songs on the album imo, I could've also done with one or two less Travis features something about a couple of em didn't click with me super hard. Weeknd did his thing.
I like that there's a place of this kind of rap and obviously it's resonating with people which is cool, I also like the amount of different kinds of people that wanna work with Carti, getting rappity rap people, trap artists and R&B/pop singers all hopping on this album makes for a pretty unique experience that you can't quite get anywhere else so I'm happy I listened!
P.S. Pop Out f---ing owns and the I SEEEEEE YOU BABY BOI beat is the best one on the album
Favorite songs: Pop Out, Rather Lie, Fine s---, Backd00r, Toxic, Good Credit, I SEEEEE YOU BABY BOI, Trim, Twin Trim, Like Weezy (realized I might like this album more than I let on with the amount of favorites but the album length broke me down a bit for the kind of music it is lmao)
