Jun 29, 2024hargydon’s Review of MID AIR
Firstly, I feel like MID AIR attempts to encapsulate a sense of disorientation & turbulence. These themes/concepts are at the same time intriguing, & ambitious. So I immediately appreciated the original style attempts, a niche I desperately want to hear more attempts at. Going into this I was curious, as this is the first time I’ve heard of this duo, but after multiple spins of the record, I’m not sure they have a big enough flare as performers or writers to pull this one off, at least yet. I thought the production, blending gritty, distorted guitars with heavy, trap-inspired beats completely overshadowed their capabilities. I actually found their performances quite annoying lol.
This was quite a disjointing experience because I tried to like it so bad but it just never happened.

I liked the album overall, had some highlights that caught me off guard cause I can’t stand rock rap most of the time. I replayed a few of the songs a lot last week, the whole things got real repetetive real quick though. For me a project like this goes hard cause it scratches an itch in a way; it hits harder than you would expect it to but it definitely isn’t something I’d pick up daily. Paris Texas sound like they could evolve and eventually drop a great album, they just need to focus cause some of the songs have weak writing and weirdly realized song structures.

I actually quite enjoyed my time with this album, a bit of the production can be a little samey in the first half and a couple songs probably could've been cut for time but overall it was a fun and charming listen.
I can see why some wouldn't like their writing since it's simple but their sense of humor really pulled me through it, idc what anyone says "She tryna meet/meat up like a Bluechew" is hilarious lmaoo.
I saw some dislike for Earth-2 and I see why but the instrumental reminds me a bit of Bloc Party so I'm legally obligated to not dislike it.
Also in the last couple tracks I got a little more personal lyrics than I was expecting which was really appreciated.
There's barely any features but I like Teezo so I thought he did good for the 5 seconds he was there and Kenny Mason f---in killed his verse. In the future I'd like to see these guys collab with Baby Keem, they give me similar vibes at points
I hate when people get specific with decimal points for album ratings but I'm really struggling on what to give it so......

OVERALL RATING: 7/10
I liked it, it kinda reminded me of early xxxtentacion and ski mask music. It just didn’t affect me enough to give it a super high score or have deep thoughts on it, but a 7/10 is still a good album. I feel like I’ve been giving most of these albums 7s or 8s lol. Some of these songs definitely went on my workout playlist. I feel like this could grow on me throughout time

Title: Three 6 Mafia - When The Smoke Clears
Standouts: Sippin' on Some Syrup, Who Run It, Tongue Ring, I'm So Hi, Who Run It
Skips: Mafia N****z, Barrin You b------s, Touched Wit it,
Score: 7/10
Final Thoughts:
IMO this album effectively showcases Three 6 Mafia's dark, gritty style. Blending horrorcore themes with hardcore Southern hip-hop, the production by DJ Paul and Juicy J create a haunting atmosphere with heavy bass lines, sharp snares, and eerie synths. Lyrically, the group delves into dark and controversial topics like drug use and violence. The album solidifies Three 6 Mafia's place in the rap game with its dark, gritty, and unapologetically raw sound. It's an excellent example of Southern hip-hop and horrorcore, bringing a unique sound that stands out from the mainstream. While it may not be for everyone, and it can feel repetitive or filler at times, if you're a fan of gritty, hardcore hip-hop, you won't be disappointed.

I feel like I've let you all down this week, I only listened to this twice as Why Lawd! took up most of my listening time which itself has been less this week.
Overall I enjoyed the project but not as much as other Three Six Mafia's stuff. I'm terrible with track names, even after 10 spins! So can't really mention highlights or lowlights. Although there was one song that was annoying with a phrase that I can't even remember now being repeated through the whole thing.
They had a winning formula and I'm disappointed with myself that I found out about them late in my life. Shout out to @Wreckless for introducing me to them in one of our lives listening sessions we used to do year years ago.
So yeah, s--- review - sorry.

f---ing b-----r, love this s---. Three 6 Mafia has been in my life for as long as I can remember, growing up in Tennessee, so this sound has always been special to me. Three 6 were truly ahead of their time and it shows with this highly influential project. b-----r after b-----r, really only 1 super weak track to me across the 19 songs on here, that track being Barrin You b------s. Sippin On Some Syrup, Tongue Ring, Who Run It, all legendary tracks that happen to be on this album. Like most of y’all have been saying, this album does suffer from having too many tracks, and if the weaker ones were left out, this project would probably be a 9 or even a 10 for me. It was very rare that I wasn’t nodding my head while listening to this album. Fun music all around that will always get you amped up. Legendary s---, hoping I can see Three 6 and Yela in concert together in Huntsville in a couple months.
RIP Gangsta Boo, Lord Infamous, and Koopsta

Three 6 Mafia - When the Smoke Clears
OVERALL RATING: 8/10
I’ve always been a fan of this Memphis sound. It’s a classic, timeless sound that almost never gets old. I’ve heard plenty of Three 6 Mafia songs but never listened to a full album. For the most part, this album was fun to listen to and nearly every song was a b-----r. As I was making my way through this album I honestly thought it would be a 9/10.
However, as the album went on it started to wear on me. While I like the repetitive nature of a lot of the songs, sometimes it got too repetitive (Act Like You Know Me). That coupled with the fact that this thing is a whopping 22 tracks starts to get tiring after a while. I also didn’t care for the skits.
Despite all that negativity, I simply like this sound too much to give it a bad score. I guess I have a soft spot for it. Perhaps if the skits and some songs in the latter half were removed, this album could be a 9/10 for me. Unfortunately that’s not the case and like I said the album started annoying me towards the end so I gotta go with 8/10 instead.

Final Thoughts:
While I don’t listen to pop music that often, I really enjoyed ‘Melodrama’. Which isn’t surprising as I also enjoyed ‘Pure Heroine’ when it came out. It's emotionally powerful and well-produced, as well as somewhat experimental. Lorde's singing is captivating; her voice feels genuine and personal. The album has a good mix of catchy pop and deeper, more artistic songs. However, the transitions between high-energy tracks and slower ballads can feel abrupt, and the themes feel repetitive at times.
Overall, while it's not something I see myself returning to, Melodrama is a solid album that shows Lorde's growth as an artist. It's worth a listen for both new and long-time fans.

I'll only go into more detail if I feel like it's necessary
Also, I'll only use integer numbers for scoring cause I could never tell the difference between a 7.5 or 7.3 lol, ofc I know a 7.5 means it's better than a 7.3 but c'mon, when it comes to scoring unless you're doing some type of calculation I don't see how you can give an album an 8.4 instead of just an 8 imoLast edited: May 20, 2024Minato, BornSinner, Ordinary Joel and 6 others like this. -

Wreckless- Burn After Downloading
This is gonna be a relatively short review cause my thoughts on every song are pretty similar. This is a really really good consistent tape that flows into itself very well. I didn't dislike any song but that does mean I didn't have clear favorites which I'll get to later. After listening to primarily rock and punk this year it felt nice to listen to just straight raps again, this Era especially. You has a really good mix of people I haven't heard of before and well knowns while still having the majority of the tracks be brand new to me. Unlike Justin to me the standouts were probably the Invincible tracks, they really hit for me and I'm surprised I didn't know of them before. The DOOM De la song is obviously great and the Soul Supreme Presents track is probably what I'm gonna spin back the most but Razorblade Salvation is probably my favorite song on here, loved every second of it and its unfortunately relatable! Lol
Definitely gonna keep this Playlist saved for anytime I'm in this mood cause it scratched an itch I didn't know I had in my brain.
Favorite Songs: Another Victory, Rock Co. Kane Flow, Overkill, Sledgehammer, Razorblade Salvation, Ayo For Yayo, Recognize, Come Get It
