Mar 2, 2025 I’m probably gonna have a busy week ahead so I decided to try to pump this out while I have time lol. Also, I heard thinking of Peter Griffin helps you last longer in bed
Mar 2, 2025 What I didn't mention is that it takes me 2 weeks to come so your review might be past due actually.
Mar 3, 2025 Jimmy Jazz - The Desolation of Jim Jazz Nice collection of songs here. Individually, I enjoyed most of the songs quite a bit. A lot of it is the kind of music I'm used to hearing in surf movies (punk/alt rock songs). Not my favourite type of music but I enjoy it on small doses Its a bit hard throwing hip hop songs in the mix with rock songs. It was especially random hearing 30 by Danny Brown after a playlist of mostly alt rock lmao. I was hoping someone would drop a playlist of strictly one genre or to try keep a theme of some sorts. Im thinking of keeping mine all rap, then doing one with non rap songs if we do it again. That's how I tend to listen to my playlists; either strictly rap or everything else. Overall, nice mix 7/10 @Justin Trudeau
Mar 3, 2025 The first draft I made for the mixtape was all rock and it felt kind or repetitive so I tried picking some rap songs that wouldn’t be sticking out like a sore thumb. Again, thanks for the nice review!
Mar 3, 2025 Some of these songs took a bit to click for me too so they maybe aren’t the best from these artists when it comes to introducing someone to their music. Still, there’s a lot of variety and different moods in the works of Modest Mouse, Viagra Boys and King Krule so I’m sure you’ll find other music from them that you’ll enjoy instantly!
Mar 3, 2025 Yeah I’ll try to find songs from them that click for me. The way it works with me with artists sometimes is I won’t like certain songs but suddenly I’ll find a song from them I love and then I suddenly like the songs from them that I didn’t like before. It’s like unlocking a new neural pathway in my brain
Mar 3, 2025 @AOTWClub Halloween: The Revival Of Michael Myers Review Favorites: Watcher 2, Hustler Musik, Bring Me to Life, Cut the Bridge, Smoke Like A Fire Overall, it’s a solid mixtape with a good variety of tracks, though it leans a bit too heavily on female pop and dance music. There are some safe, predictable hits like Hustler Musik and Bring Me to Life, probably the most popular songs from those respective artists. But it also has some lesser-known songs that I enjoyed like the track from Bliss n Eso. I’m not sure if I’ve ever heard Watcher 2 before but if I have I definitely didn’t remember it. So that was a nice surprise. Not much else to say I would give this one a 6.5
Mar 3, 2025 I had a similar experience with a band I found recently. Now pretty much their entire discography has me hooked. Aquired taste is definitely a real thing.
Mar 3, 2025 It happened to me with an artist not too long ago as well. It’s really fascinating how that happens. It’s crazy how sometimes one song can make or break an artist/band. They put out one song that finally clicks for people and then out of nowhere the rest of the discography can end up looking a lot better. Things like this are why I try to give artists and bands multiple chances before I say that I truly don’t like them. Human brains are interesting
Mar 3, 2025 Maybe it’s the sense of familiarity. You start noticing elements you didn’t catch before and it’s those details that make the artist's sound unique.
Mar 3, 2025 This band's music I’ve been obsessed with lately started with goth/death-doom metal and somehow ended up venturing into synth-pop and rock. But there’s something about their sound that still feels unique and ties it all together. It wasn't until I went back to listen to some of those albums that I started to like the songs. Someone unfamiliar would probably think it's two different bands lol
Mar 4, 2025 @Justin Trudeau @AOTWClub Halloween: The Revival Of Michael Myers Judging a book by it's cover I figured I wouldn't like this as much as I did. I'm not the biggest fan of Jay but Watcher 2 is obviously a very good track Beginning of The End is cool, don't think I've heard of Spineshank unless I'm forgetting a song of theirs. Saved it. I think having a bunch of high budget production and artists for music based on GOT is really funny and tone deaf to the show but Power Is Power is solid, nothing super special to me but overall good. WTF Do I Know wasn't bad, liked it more than I thought but outside of a couple songs Miley isn't for me. Same feeling with Rio, latin music is pretty hit or miss for me but between this and the Becky G track (which I liked much more) it is inspiring me to do some more international music when the time is right for future mixtapes. I haven't heard Body Talks that I know of but Ke$ha is a guilty pleasure and I thought she sounded good on there, happy you picked this one cause I wasn't expecting it at all lol. Linkin Park is a cheat code, Cut The Bridge isn't my favorite from the record but a solid album cut to choose for sure. Hustler Musik was cool, Wayne is another guy that I'm iffy with depending on the era and what he decides to do on a song but it was just solid rapping which is all I want from him. I don't have much to say about Something To Die For although I'm indifferent to it I can see it growing on me in the future! It's Never Too Late by Steppenwolf is probably my favorite pick of the bunch, I really liked it and never heard it before which is the exact sweet spot that made me excited about the prospect of the mixtape rotations in the first place!! I also really liked the Nena song, was a little long but was an interesting pick that I liked the sound of, was also part of me wanting to pick more international music in the future. Smoke Like A Fire was alright being objective about it but I didn't like it that much, British voices in rap are VERY particular for me. Bring Me To Life is a 10/10, nothing else to say. And the Demi song was good, she's much better in her rock bag, and the 2000s nature of the sound kinda for the vibe of Scream better than SZA, Travis and Weeknd fits Game Of Thrones. Conclusion: while there wasn't many songs I disliked I felt indifferent to a decent portion of the selection which brings down the score a bit, I can see a handful of these songs growing on me though and the songs I did like I very much did. Kudos to you @Michael Myers for songs that felt in your wheelhouse but mostly new for me, that's what the mixtapes are all about! RATING: 7/10
Mar 4, 2025 Gonna try to get the @Jimmy Jazz review in by Thursday but depends on how much Monster Hunter eats away at my life!
Mar 4, 2025 I know this is a very odd observation but DMX's debut and Vince Staples' BFT are the only albums to have multiple songs across the mixtapes so far.
Mar 6, 2025 @AOTWClub the scoreboard has been updated for @Michael Myers mixtape it scored a 6.4 Get your reviews in for @Jimmy Jazz mixtape!
Mar 6, 2025 @Jimmy Jazz @AOTWClub @Justin Trudeau The Desolation of Jim Jazz: I knew I was gonna very much enjoy this and I wasn't wrong! It ended up being a collection of a lot of artists that I've been meaning to listen to more of which was nice Baby Criminal much like the rest of the small sample size I've heard from Viagra Boys is very fun We got off to a strong start early cause the Parquet Courts track was one of my favorites, I don't think I ever heard of them but I need to dig in more cause I adored the sound. Jimmy Jazz was making me laugh cause I was so confused about what the username change was and I finally have an answer lol. Not one of my favorites of the bunch but still solid nonetheless. Alone, Together was super great, The Strokes is another band that completely hits my blindspot which is very funny cause it seems like I'd be very into them. I know a bit more about Talking Heads but still a loose knowledge that falls apart aside from some cursory information and a handful of songs, that being said Born Under Punches was another song I absolutely loved. I need to stop procrastinating and actually listen to more of them. A fellow Big Fish Theory song chooser and it did not disappoint, Crabs In A Bucket is a great one and even though Vince Staples is great in general BFT is the most Jankland-coded of his discography. I wish more rappers were comfortable trying that kind of production. I thought I wasn't going to like Empire Ants for the first minute or so, it wasn't bad or anything I just don't think I was in the right mood for Damon's parts, my opinion 180'd during the Little Dragon feature (another group I need to get to) by the end of it I really liked it. Seas Ghost is awesome, beginning with a shanty a--- instrumental into a punky song was super fun. I've been in the mood for a lot of this kind of music and adjacent stuff so I'm happy I got a playlist of a decent amount of it. Wasn't familiar with The Unicorns but now I want to be! Once again on bands I need to get to, I've had an AJJ album saved for a long while and haven't gotten to it, Distance was great though, vocals and pretty mood dependant for me but they scratched my ears right when I was listening, I can see this portion of the playlist be where it starts to get iffy for some others due to the vocal stylings but I quite enjoyed it. Teeth Like God's Shoeshine was cool, took a second for me to warm up to it but the second half grabbed me. I always think it's funny how hard the whiplash would be for people who only know Float On lol I'm not familiar with Protomartyr but Half Sister f---ing rules, equal parts entertaining and interesting lyricism that I want to dig into more over a great instrumental, idk if they do mostly this poetry kinda delivery but I thought it worked really well here and ended up being a big highlight! I can see myself liking The Calendar Hung Itself more in the future with more listens but for some reason Bright Eyes always takes a bit to click with me even when I know what to expect, I still think it's a good song but there was a slight disconnect i can't place my finger on that I know will go away eventually. They're relatively short tracks but the Matt Elliott song was very pretty, I'm not familiar but I liked it acting as a little interlude and loved the sound which flowed together nicely into Empty Stomach Space Cadet, King Krule another band I need to dig into. I loved the hazy feeling instrumental and vocal delivery, a very good back to back selection in terms of flow which is why I grouped them together. I'd say the whole taped flowed pretty well but these in particular felt like sister songs to me. Not much to say about What's Good, it's good! Lol. Tyler rarely misses 30 is a very fun closer, not used to Danny Brown sounding that aggressive on parts but it could be my ignorance to a lot of his discography, I heard great things about this album and I finally need to jump in. Conclusion: this f---er made a great skateboarding playlist which is a positive attack on my taste Favorites: Baby Criminal, Almost Had To Start A Fight, Alone, Together, Born Under Punches, Crabs In A Bucket, Seas Ghost, Half Sister, 30 RATING: 9/10
