Mar 16, 2025 @Allis Mines - Big Monkey’s Blowup doll review This was such a great, cohesive mixtape that has had pretty much infinite replayability for me during the last week or so. I played this s--- everywhere; in the car, at the grocery store, at work, at the free P diddy rally… hol’ up. I’ve been itching to get my hands on more fresh-to-me hiphop to listen to. Lately I’ve kinda moved away from the genre and wasn’t really feeling like checking albums out so this was a godsend. There is a really cool, soulful vibe that permeates this mixtape. I don’t really have much else to say but to list some of my personal highlights. Carefree is a great tune; I’ve been meaning to get into Mick Jenkins’ music for a while and now I’ll definitely get to it asap (anyone got any recommendations for whete to start off?). The OME song is very typical of his style and as such I loved it. Honestly I enjoyed every track on here besides Not a Drill and Matthew in the Middle. The former just isn’t for me, while the latter I found to be a snoozer. Loved the energy on Fresh Prince, I do not know if it was intentional but the track is also funny as f--- in a way. Not only did Dead or Alive go straight to the playlist where it awaits for me to infinitely replay it, the song also kicked off what, to me, is the best section of the tape. Reality Check and The Come Up are both immaculate in every way! Great beats, great wordplay, great flows and amazing vibes. Same is true for F(R)lends, never heard of this guy but I like the style. I am also a sucker for jazz-rap so there’s that. Its transition into Indian Summer was smooth as h--- too. The run from Dead or Alive to Lemon was G R E A T, and so was this mixtape in general. I also appreciate how it does not get repetitive or stale at any point in its runtime despite being rap only. To me that’s a sign of a well-assembled single genre playlist. 9/10 Thanks for the tape! @AOTWClub @Justin Trudeau
