Jun 11, 2024 @AOTWClub Lorde- Melodrama Review Favorite songs: Green Light, Homemade Dynamite, Sober, writer in the dark Least Favorite songs: I got nothing I liked them all Review: Before listening to this id completely ignored "Lorde" to be honest I dont listen to much pop music besides Taylor Swift and its because my girlfriend likes her its not because I'm a long time fan or anything. The production on this is great and feels familiar to me, noticed Jack Antonoff collaborated with Lorde on this album, also does Taylor Swift. Lordes voice is great, I would love to hear her on a rap feature, dunno if she's ever done one before? She'd sound great with someone like Eminem or Jay-Z. Anyways I'd put this album on the same level as any solid Taylor Swift album, maybe even a bit better. I like Lordes voice a bit better and find her songs a bit more interesting. There wasn't one song I wanted to skip at any point in my 3 listens through, really enjoyed this album. Wouldn't really add these songs to my playlist because they're not really my thing but I will definitely return to this album at some point and check out some of her other stuff. 7.5/10
Jun 12, 2024 Lorde- Melodrama 7/10 Favorite songs: the louvre, sober, homemade dynamite, Least favorite songs: if i had to pick it’s Sober pt. 2 Loving Jack Antonoff’s production on this, its hella lush and dynamic, blends synth-pop with elements of indie and art pop real well. There’s something to be said about the soundscape on this thing; feels both intimate and expansive (if that makes sense lol). Funny thing is, the color of her voice is what I care for the least on this thing: not that it’s bad! She just kinda sounds like she’s voicing an anime character at times. I see the appeal tho I just kinda get oversaturated by her inflections at times. Other than that, the album is really well written, cohesive and unique. Feels like she’s tapped into a special esthetic on here. I would be lying if I said I didn’t want something more experimental from her next though (if her recent albums are that’s nice but this is the first of her works I’ve checked out so cut me some slack). Would love to hear her on something dark and ambiental/droney. Great suggestion! Thanks for putting me on.
Jun 13, 2024 LORDE - MELODRAMA OVERALL RATING: 7/10 LIKES: Sober, The Louvre, Liability, Hard Feelings/Loveless, Sober II (Melodrama) HONORABLE MENTIONS: Homemade Dynamite, Perfect Places DISLIKES: the post-chorus “broadcast the boom, boom, boom, boom and make em all dance to it” on The Louvre I don’t really have any strong thoughts or feelings on this album, but it’s a nice album for sure. Liability still makes me cry! Hearing this album made me realize Lorde inspired artists today like Olivia Rodrigo. I feel like the first half of the album was stronger than the second half. @AOTWClub
Jun 13, 2024 I didn't have time to listen to the album with my f---ing pest problem which seems to be solved now, so I'll likely give it a spin tomorrow, never listened to a single Lorde song in my life even tho I know of her thanks to South Park, so this should be interesting
Jun 13, 2024 Soooo Im looking at the tracklist and I don’t see “I Am Lorde, Ya Ya Ya”…am I missing something? Was that on Pure Heroine?
Jun 13, 2024 I love what I’ve heard of Lorde’s music, it’s honestly kinda sad that I haven’t dived into her discog more. She seems very likeable too, so hopefully I can start to become a bigger fan
Jun 13, 2024 hargydon’s Review of Melodrama Favourite songs: Green Light, Liability & Writer in the Dark My initial introduction to this album came a couple of years ago, courtesy of @jankland. At that time, all I was familiar with from Lorde was her album Pure Heroine & the song Liability from this album, which I’d heard on the show Euphoria iirc. Liability still to this day is one of my favourite lonely hours cuts! I’ve always enjoyed her voice, very unique singing style, yet some noticeable parallels to Sia, especially the lyrical themes (& Lorde is from New Zealand & Sia, Australia). So, now revisiting the album for a second time, I was hoping to gain a deeper appreciation or discover new elements I might have missed initially. However, my overall impression remains largely the same as before. Lorde’s performance strikes me as inoffensive & middle-of-the-road, which occasionally renders it somewhat monotonous. While there are undoubtedly sparks of greatness especially with the production, the music as a whole fails to leave a lasting impact for me & I think it’s mainly because of the combination of mellow instrumentation & Lorde herself. It's an album that comfortably fits into the background without demanding much engagement or evoking strong emotions. The chorus on Perfect Places is crack though ngl. It’s not that the album is bad. It just lacks a spark or edge that would make it truly stand out. As a result the listening experience feels kinda passive, offering little beyond a pleasant but forgettable ride. It’s a decent listen, but not one that will force repeated revisits for me I’m afraid. Rating: 5/10 @AOTWClub
Jun 13, 2024 Janky's turn @AOTWClub Favorite Songs: Liability, Green Light, Sober, The Louvre, Writer In The Dark, Sober II Least Favorites: Hard Feelings/Loveless, Liability (Reprise) My least favorites aren't bad songs by any means but they feel like the weakest. I'm pretty biased towards Lorde's first two projects cause they hit me at the right time so imma keep it short and sweet (that was a f---ing lie). This is one of the better Jack Antonoff produced albums and my favorite frequent collaborator of his, I really like most of the beats and here and they're quite catchy. I also really love her voice, she has a great sense of melody that fits her raspier tone imo. I think it could be hit or miss for some people but I really like most of the writing, it can feel a bit wordy for the sake of it but I find that it feels different for the genre and lyrics like "we'll end up painted on the road, red and chrome, all the broken glass sparkling. I guess we're partying" is such a f----- and vivid description of dying in a car crash on a somewhat regular party song that it does a good job at painting a vivid image and providing a good counter balance so it's not too bubblegummy while tying in to the more depressive songs later on. Even the line that @Ripper Roo brought up "Megaphone to my chest, broadcast the, boom, boom, boom, and make 'em all dance to it" can be a bit corny but i enjoy something slightly more obtuse like that more than blatantly saying "I MAKE CATCHY PERSONAL SONGS FROM THE HEART" I go back and forth on whether I like this or Pure Heroine better but they're both good for equally similar and different reasons. RATING: 8.5/10
Jun 13, 2024 I knew old man @Michael Myers would pick some pop music He's pretty much a non-autistic version of @Marsh
Jun 13, 2024 Just watched Fantano’s review of the album and my score is the same as his. I swear I’m not Fantano, that was an accident.
Jun 13, 2024 I get that. For me it was more so the delivery I didn’t like rather than the line itself. It’s not a big deal though it’s still one of my favorite songs on the album Yeah the Liability reprise felt kinda pointless to me idk but it’s still okay
Jun 14, 2024 Dunno why you respond to someone that doesn't participate but only comes in here to be a big baby
