Jul 4, 2024 Clairo - Sling I will start by saying this is NOT my genre of music, but I still enjoyed it for what it is. However, I also just don’t have much to say about it, it was just a good listen and experience. I don’t really have any songs that stuck out to me as favorites, but I also don’t have any that stick out as bad. Not sure if I see myself coming back to this but I do appreciate the recommendation and listen @Ripper Roo . It’s definitely nice to hear something different than what I usually listen to! Score: 8.5/10 @Justin Trudeau
Jul 4, 2024 Also, Mid Air was about as controversial as I thought it would be review wise but I’m happy to see I was able to show a few people something new they like. Also, if you liked any part of Mid Air, I don’t plan on using Paris Texas in AOTW again so I recommend checking out Red Hand Akimbo, it’s a shorter more focused 12 minute EP that leans way harder into the rock rap stuff, and if you enjoyed some songs from Mid Air, I definitely think they’re more in their bag in RHA. Sorry to clog up the thread with a follow up from my week I forgot to post this before the new album was picked!
Jul 4, 2024 hargydon’s Review of Sling The album appears to have 2 central themes — family & the music industry. The Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers comparison is quite appropriate, seeing how the album appears to be delving into her conflict/inner battle with self throughout. Amoeba hook is heat, for some reason Wade really gives me The Zombies vibes, something like Care of Cell 44. Blouse is a powerful feminist anthem in her expression of the struggle between wanting to progress in the industry but having to push through the objectifications for the end goal, trying to reason with herself that the ends justify the means. Reaper was extremely poignant, engaging with the dark realisations of the circle of life, the challenges a woman faces especially in her 20s on the choice of motherhood, & how despite it being a personal choice, society can still persuade the decision based on judgement. However, just like Lorde’s album we had as part of the AOTW, Jack Antonoff’s production style for me really takes away a lot of the edge of the artists he’s working with. Compared to Immunity sonically this just feels like something’s missing, there’s no spark, from the vocals or the majority of the instrumentation. The writing from Clairo majorly carries this project. I think me & Mr. Antonoff need to settle this with a street fight. I love the vulnerability in the writing, she’s still got the soft-spoken charm, but it doesn’t give me the same energy, catchiness & vibe as Immunity, so that still remains my favourite Clairo project. Rating: 7/10 @AOTWClub
Jul 4, 2024 I love this review, it’s one of the most detailed ones for any album I’ve seen in here! Yessssss I’m glad someone noticed my comparison Finally someone pointed this out. I can’t get enough of that s--- I need it in my veins I couldn’t have said it better myself. These songs are very important to the album. I’ll go into more detail when I make my post about the album in the next few days. I still love the production but yeah Clairo’s writing is the biggest highlight for me with this album. That’s what truly made me love it so much. Haha I don’t mind his production style but I see what you mean. I see a lot of people not liking his style lately. I do agree sometimes his s--- seems sanitized Makes sense! I respect it
Jul 4, 2024 Clairo is getting some high scores she might be coming for that number 1 spot Also guys during the Death of Slim Shady break I'm gonna go through and change weeks to only people who've been participating. That way if others jump in I'll add them in. Just seems stupid to have 20+ weeks when only like 14ish people are constantly participating. That way the people more involved actually get more albums to pick, the convo on this group is way better than I had expected so it's been fun. Convo is also more normal than the eminem thread lol
Jul 4, 2024 It definitely gave me a lot to work with, I love when it feels like heavy attention is being paid to the words being written. I’ll definitely give her new record a spin when it drops for sure. Nice profile pic btw!
Jul 4, 2024 I’m just in there to troll at this point lol At least in here S80 is actually participating in something non-Eminem-music-based for once.
Jul 4, 2024 I will laugh if that actually happens lmao Mostly because we didn’t let any of the r-----s in
Jul 4, 2024 Same, that is the type of music that will always resonate with me the most. It’s what makes music special to me. Thanks! I wonder who sent it to me!
Jul 4, 2024 Clairo - Sling As someone who used to be very involved in music twitter (this was around 3-4 years ago) I heard about Clairo a lot, but I never really checked her music out. I don't know why, but I didn't expect that this would mainly be a Singer-Songwriter album but I was pleasantly surprised. The production really surprised me especially, and it reminded of Lana Del Rey's NFR at some point (Jack Antonoff has production credits on 6/12 tracks so that might be why) The lyricism was more melancholic than I expected and the whole album has a very chilled out vibe and I'll definitely check out her new album when it drops next week. Fav Tracks: Amoeba, Blouse Reaper Rating: 7.5 @AOTWClub
Jul 4, 2024 I’m glad I’m seeing more people have love for Amoeba and Reaper, those are goated tracks to me I finally converted someone
Jul 5, 2024 Clairo - Sling I'm going to be honest; if it wasn't for this review club I probably would have dismissed this. You definitely need to be in some sort of mood to listen to this, at least I do. I chose to just lay back outside in the sun and put this on; great choice! She has such a warm voice thats very pleasant to listen to. Some of the beats are a little too slow for me, I do prefer songs like Amoeba (my favorite by far), Zinnias, Reaper and Joanie. The opening song is a perfect song when ur relaxing though. Great pick Ripper Roo! Only listened once so far so this can get higher or lower, but like I said I kinda need the right circumstances to really enjoy this. 7.5/10
Jul 5, 2024 Glad you have it a chance! Trust me, I don’t listen to this all the time First person I’ve seen mention Zinnias. Nice! The guitar is crazy on that song
Jul 5, 2024 Clairo - Sling album review 8/10 Favorite tracks: Bambi, Amoeba, Harbor, Joanie, Reaper, Zinnias Least favorite tracks: Just for today My bad for taking so long to post this, I’ve played this album a very good amount since it came out, thought I had all my thoughts about the album pretty much formulated but relistening to it again proved me wrong. Fantastic album from Clairo. I first learned of her music back when Immunity dropped, I liked what that record was trying to go for but felt (and still do, honestly) that she had bitten off more than she could chew when it comes to the often all-over-the place instrumentation. Since I was a fan of her as a songwriter and thought she surely had a great album in her, I tuned in as soon as Sling had came out, I was proven right. I feel like Sling is an album of great significance for Clairo; with it she succeeded at making a grand and cohesive project which is a testament to her unique and classy approach to writing and song structure. Sling pulls you in with a brilliant opening track, bambi which is one of my favorite songs on the whole thing. Super mellow and melodic, it is a track where Clairo wears her musical influences on her sleeve, the almost jazzy instrumentation paired with those great crispy drums takes me back to being 17 years old and spam-listening to the same five indie rock records (in the best way possible). My only little nitpicks on this thing are the rare moments where the production drowns Clairo out in a way and makes her sound like an early Bon Iver tribute act (this sentence may not make sense to everybody but it may resonate with those who were listening to For Emma, forever ago back when it was at its peak popularity. great suggestion @Ripper Roo , excited to see where Clairo goes next @Justin Trudeau
