Jul 28, 2024 Orpheus vs the Sirens - Hermit and the Recluse I was pretty excited to listen to this album for 2 reasons: 1. I’m really into Greek Mythology 2. I’ve been planning to listen to a Ka record for a while now (probably would’ve started with “Honor Killed the Samurai”) I think that at least for me, the biggest stand out was the production. “Atlas” and “Argo” both have beats that go incredibly hard and I’m a big fan of “Hades” too. Something that I appreciated a lot was that the verses actually used Greek myths as metaphors instead of just being named after them and having no relation apart from that. I do think that the short runtime does affect the enjoyability a bit, but it has a pretty nice vibe and I’ll check out more from Ka and Animoss in the future. Favorites: Fate, Atlas, Argo, Hades Rating: 8 @AOTWClub
Jul 28, 2024 I do not wanna sit through that album ever again lol only album I've ever agreed with Marsh on
Jul 28, 2024 Hermit and the Recluse - Orpheus vs. the Sirens 8.5/10 What an album!! And this is why I love this thread. I would never have given this a second glance if I'd seen it before, which I haven't. And even if it did miraculously fall in front of me I would've given up half way through. It did not start well for me. I don't know if that's because I'm away at the moment so I'm concentrating differently or what but I was bored. But for the purpose of this thread I pushed through a whole spin. And then gave it another go a few days later. Then it clicked. 3 or 4 full spins back to back whilst sailing down a canal in Poland has solidified this in my memory banks and given it a reference point. I'm close to 10 full spins now. Love the theming of the album, love the production and as someone else has already mentioned, the writing is great. Wish it was a bit longer. Favourite song is Atlas. No bad songs. I'll be revisiting this in the future. Thanks @Ordinary Joel @AOTWClub
Jul 28, 2024 @DiggleDogg69 hurry up and ruin the rest of my holiday with your pick please man. I'm desperate to start again with my pick!
Jul 28, 2024 hargydon’s Review of Orpheus vs. The Sirens Wow. This collaborative album by Ka & Animoss, really showcases the talents of both but also why time & time again in-house producing is the best way to make music. When people talk about how hard it is to come up with fresh subject matter, rappers like Ka prove that you can really incorporate any concept into your artistic world if you’re bold & talented enough to pull it off. Boy did he pull it off. The profound exploration of Greek mythology interwoven with Ka’s introspective lyricism with a modern tinge & Animoss’s tasteful, minimalist, haunting production leaving space for Ka to deliver his slick spoken poetry is incredible. The fusion of Greek mythology with modern-day narratives is genius to me. & the wordplay man, the wordplay! Music like this: the Ka’s, the Billy Woods’, the Milo’s are not ones I tend to spin often, or put in playlist rotation, & that can at times push people to look at this style of rap in a negative light. But not all music is intended to be played over & over again, at parties, in the whip etc. This type of music is what I will put on when I’m in a specific space, where I can’t be distracted, & I have total undivided attention to appreciate & indulge in the craftsmanship. It’s deep, it requires patience & a curiosity to penetrate into the world that’s being portrayed, it’s an exercise akin to reading a fiction book. You can’t passively engage with it. After multiple listens, I know there’s more to this album that I will discover, & yet even before then, I still find it difficult to find flaws, it’s a seamless execution from top to bottom. So this will not only be my highest score yet, but a perfect one too. Spoiler: Highlights: It's hard to love, and if only God could judge, who needs juries?
