Kings Of Crunk - Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz REVIEW

    Score: 6.5

    First Listen Review:

Listening to Lil Jon in the college dorm, is this what it was like to be a young adult in the 00's? I have never listened to a Lil Jon album in full, but have of course heard him appear on multiple songs over the years. Love what he adds to songs and he seems like a cool, stand up guy in real life, but this album has the exact issue I was worried about. It just kinda...drags. I'm sure if these songs came on individually in my liked songs (I liked a majority of the tracks), I'm gonna be nodding my head. As a full album though, it's a loooooong listen. Some of these tracks did not have to be as long as they are, and there could have been cuts made to the tracklist. The middle portion of this album is pretty good, then it drops for a bit, then finishes very strong. Get Low is a f---ing classic though. Nothin On deserves more love, it only has just under 900,000 streams on Spotify which shocked me because it sounds like a song that would be a hit. Pitbull had a standout feature (this might be the earliest verse I've ever heard from him), Oobie has a gorgeous voice, and loved what MJG and Bun B brought on Diamonds. BME Click is also a strong closer. Basically, this album has lots of bangers, but it isn't the most enjoyable listen as a whole album. That's why its score suffered. Songs will sound great when they come on shuffle though! Thanks for the pick @Yeez !

Bright Eyes - Lifted or The Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground
I'll be honest, I had never heard about Bright Eyes before @stepdad enjoyer 's recommendation. I usually do some research on the albums recommended here (unless I'm familiar with them beforehand like Cilvia Demo or AMHAC) so that I have some idea of what I'm getting into. When I saw the genre "Chamber Pop" the only record I could remember listening to was Belle and Sebastian's "If You're Feeling Sinister" which I was pretty lukewarm on.

I will say though, that I was greatly surprised. This might be an odd comparison, but the first track kinda reminded me of a few songs off ofGodspeed You! Black Emperor's "F#A# ∞" (I might be the only person on s80 who even knows about GYBE's existence). A key point about this record is definitely the passion. Every single word that Conor Oberst sings is sung with so much power, that I was in awe. i saw someone refer to this record as similar to the Bob Dylan track Desolation Row, and as a big fan of 60's Dylan I greatly appreciated it. It's no surprise considering it's the first single, but my favorite track has to be "Lover I Don't Have To Love". I don't really have any least favorites really. Maybe the final track goes on for a bit too long, but I enjoyed the record a lot overall.
Favorite Tracks: Lover I Don't Have To Love, Method Acting, Bowl of Oranges

Glad you liked it man. I can definitely see the GY!BE! association, let’s just say this is like that band’s overly solipsistic little half brother lmao. Oberst has been compared to Dylan ever since early 2000s, even called a cheap copycat by haters; imo the influence dylan has had on him is obvious but his records provide a completely different spin on such trad-folk song structures.

Bright Eyes - LIFTED or the Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground

Favorite tracks: Method Acting, False Advertising, Nothing Gets Crossed Out, Waste of Paint

    OVERALL RATING: 9/10

I am impressed by the writing on this album. The lyrics and storytelling are said in a very creative way. It’s all pretty poetic. I like the messages of darkness and trying to get out of it. I really relate to all of my favorite tracks I listed. I’d quote some of my favorite lyrics but there’s too many to quote. The singing is extremely passionate as well. This is a deep album, and I can tell a lot of care went into it. There’s a lot about this album I’m not touching on in this review as this is one of those albums that gets better through long periods of time I think. @AOTWClub

Bright Eyes- Lifted or the story is In the soil, Keep your ear to the ground.

I do not like this album, even a little bit. I'm gonna try not to ramble on here too much, or bash the group.

So I respect the song writing throughout the album, some of the lyrics are very good. False advertising had some really memorable lyrics for me.

But to me I find the lead singers voice sounds like a kid whose trying out for the high school musical. I wasnt literally cringing and laughing to myself at some points.

I gave it two listen throughs and didn't really want to revisit it a third time.

I'm not gonna get it a terrible rating though because like I said the song writing is very good just can't really get past the voice of the singer.

I also can see the appeal of this type of music, it's not like Bright Eyes are Ice Spice level of bad to me, they're just not for me and not what I like.

    Rating 4/10

I've failed the club this time, I don't wanna be a d-ck, I'm just tryna be honest, I couldn't finish the album and I've tried a couple of times throughout this week, this definitely isn't for me and it's a shame cause judging from what people are saying, I'm missing out on good writing but the lead's voice kills me, I can't lie it reminds me of the tone a kid would have when he was just told "No".

FWIW, "Lover I Don't Have To Love" is a song I'd enjoy if it was sung by someone else (although I can understand that'd make it lose some of its original passion)

I just finished the Lil Jon album, and it exceeded my expectations. Though the album's length did lead to some filler and I also hate skits, I was surprised by several solid tracks beyond the obvious hits like "Throw It Up" and "Get Low" (which definitely bring back that Need for Speed Underground nostalgia).

Even though the score won't count
