Sep 15, 2024 I love this s--- man! Seeing yalls opinions and hearing new music each week gives me something to look forward to
Sep 16, 2024 Travis Scott - Rodeo Rodeo is a great example of a whole not being greater than the sum of its parts. There are some all-timer songs on here (“Nightcrawler,” "Oh My Dis Side,” “3500," “Maria I’m Drunk”), but as an album it fails for me despite there being a good stretch of songs near the beginning ("Oh My Dis Side" to "Nightcrawler"). Between the T.I. narration and the maximalist production, he’s aping both Kanye and Cudi and failing at both (additionally, both “Piss on Your Grave” and “3500” were originally Kanye songs and “90210” is the most blatant 808s & Heartbreak copypasta I’ve ever heard). When you listen to Man on the Moon or My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy you end up with a clear picture of who Ye and Cudi are and what they were going through at that moment in time. Rodeo, on the other hand, has absolutely nothing to say about not just Travis himself, but about anything, really. Travis Scott’s personality is a black hole. He’s six projects in (plus the Quavo collab and JACKBOYS) and we still don’t have any more idea who Travis Scott is than we did here on Rodeo. He likes to rage? His main talent is as a curator and he’s usually pretty good at pairing guests and choosing beats. But I’m almost never listening to a Travis Scott song for Travis Scott (the single good solo song, “Antidote” is just Swae Lee karaoke). Think about Dr. Dre, who is also a great curator, but I actually want to hear Dre rap on Dre albums. An album doesn’t necessarily need to have any sort of deep meaning for it to be good, but the other aspects of the album aren’t interesting enough to make up for it. It does nothing new or experimental in terms of production — don’t get me wrong, there’s some amazing beats on here (“Nightcrawler” specifically), but the album is overall extremely spotty and has no real through-line. Keef renegades the whole album imo 4.5/10 @AOTWClub
Sep 16, 2024 I'm prob ranking Owl too high based on 12 yr old memories of him having potential tbh lol it's been a minute since I've listened
Sep 16, 2024 I have never seen someone call Rodeo a 4.5 before but I gotta respect the take! At least you gave valid reasons instead of "Travis bad" I got Rodeo > Utopia > Astroworld > Days Before I would include Birds and Owl in there but I haven't done a proper listen to both of them in forever
Sep 16, 2024 DBR is my fav mainly because the goat thug features . I agree with DKC, Travis is the OG industry plant. Especially since he sold his soul to Kylie Jenner , and became even more basic.
Sep 16, 2024 This is why I think a 5 star scale makes more sense even tho 10 pt scale "feels" better lol. On a 5 star scale people generally consider 3/5 good but on a 10 point scale they consider 6/10 mediocre even tho they're the same. this is how I think about it: 5 - classic: must listen for all music fans in general 4 - great: must listen for fans of the genre 3 - good: despite some flaws it's definitely worth listening to as a whole 2 - mediocre: has a handful of good songs/ideas but falls flat as an album in the end 1 - bad: maybe has one solid song but the rest is terrible and entirely skippable 0 - awful: virtually nothing redeemable about it, only worth listening to as an exercise in learning just how bad music can be
Sep 16, 2024 I feel like with Travis I really like a few of his songs but I don't want a whole album by him, lots of artists like that for me
Sep 17, 2024 @AOTWClub gonna tally up Travis Scott- Rodeo tonight Looking forward to the reviews for this week's album, but I've decided I actually prefer reviewing albums instead of picking them
Sep 17, 2024 Nobody cares bro Spoiler: :) but for real I agree to an extent but like a 2/5 feels very below average to me, while a 5/10 is literally middle of the road. Same with giving a 7.. means its really good to me but 4/5 (so an 8) has to be special. Its more a psychological thing though lmao
Sep 17, 2024 This maths ain't mathing, maybe a scale of bananas will make more sense to you Americans
Sep 17, 2024 we usually use a scale of burgers or mtn dew I just translated it because it's too complex for ur puny British commonwealth brain to understand
Sep 17, 2024 2/5 = 4/10 and if 5/10 is middle of the road then 2/5 isn't that much below average That's why a 5pt scale is better cuz there's too many numbers with 10 so they become less meaningful the lower you go. A lot of people consider anything below a 7 bad. Psychological like you said
Sep 17, 2024 @AOTWClub Travis Scott Rodeo Scored a 7.3/10 and is in 6th place! Thats a 3.65/5 for our lazy American scale Lots of divisive scores for this album as well. Assuming that'll happen to the Marilyn Manson Album this week too. Nice pick @DiggleDogg69
Sep 17, 2024 Marilyn Manson - Eat Me , Drink Me This album made me want to remove my ribs and s--- my own c---. Enough said. 7.5/10
Sep 17, 2024 Honestly, not sure if this is higher or lower than what I expected! AOTWClub did its thing, thanks for listening yall
