Sep 28, 2024 House Of Balloons - The Weeknd REVIEW Score: 8.5 Review: So, it's been a "couple hours" you could say. Sorry for getting this in later than anticipated, the end of the week got busier than expected. Anyways, House Of Balloons was a fantastic project! You can tell The Weeknd found his lane pretty early on and knew it was gold. It was interesting to hear some of his earlier work for the first time! I don't think I have heard a song from The Weeknd from any project earlier than Beauty Behind The Madness, so it was nice to hear music from 13(!!!!!) years ago. I had no clue who The Weeknd was until Beauty, so it was dope to hear what he was doing while I was literally starting 1st grade. This project only had one miss for me, being the outro, The Knowing. Not sure why, just didn't hit for me like the rest of the project. Not a bad song by any means, just wasn't the strong outro I was hoping for. The standouts to me were the title track and The Party & The After Party. Beautiful singing all around from him and a nice listen at only 44 minutes! Good s---, I'm ready to dig into his earlier works now in the lead up to the new album! Thanks for the pick @Ripper Roo ! @Justin Trudeau @AOTWClub My Rankings: Sling - 9.0 Cilvia Demo - 8.5 House Of Balloons - 8.5 Melodrama - 8.5 Orpheus vs. the Sirens - 8.5 Seventh Son of a Seventh Son - 8.5 The Death Of Slim Shady - 8.5 Laugh Now, Cry Later - 8.0 When the Smoke Clears: Sixty 6, Sixty 1 - 8.0 All My Heroes Are Cornballs - 7.5 Americana - 7.5 Big Conspiracy - 7.0 Kings Of Crunk - 6.5 MID AIR - 6.5 EAT ME, DRINK ME - 6.0 LIFTED of The Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground - 5.5 When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That s--- Gold - 5.0 DiggleDogg's Rating Average: 7.5
Sep 29, 2024 Kinda f----- my tempo of reviews over by being late with the Manson album. Gonna try and get my Weeknd review in asap!
Sep 29, 2024 Review tonight, would have had it posted this morning if I wasn't called into work for a spontaneous double shift lol
Sep 29, 2024 The Weeknd - House Of Balloons review In the last couple of years of participating in numerous online music communities and being included in a lot of discourse about all kinds of music, I’ve seen this album get a ton of love and praise. The Weeknd is an artist who I never gave a proper listen to discography-wise, but I’ve heard and even enjoyed a ton of his more mainstream hits. This is a very solid, and very smooth, R&B album. The Weeknd presents a great style here, and a lot of the harder production elements (such as the guitars) really compliment it well. It's also pretty consistent; I wouldn't call any of the nine tracks here bad, or even close to it. Even the length of the songs (which are pretty long for this genre) really do earn their length. This might be one of the finest snapshots of the mind of someone in the midst of their suffering. What really appeals to me about House of Balloons is the personal nature of it. This is an extremely intimate collection of tracks, with all of The Weeknd’s insecurities, flaws, and desires on full display. At first, it’s more vapid, as though it’s an album about the nocturnal life, about the life of the party. But it’s not. If anything, it’s about the part of us that seeks the party in the first place Besides all that, it sounds awesome. This is music, after all. It sounds amazing. Atmospheric and dark, with catchy beats and emotional set-pieces. I’m not just trying to mindlessly gush at the start of my review - I had no familiarity with the artist outside of his later-career big singles and did not expect to get so much out of this mixtape. But that’s my fault. 8/10
Sep 29, 2024 I’m glad you get it. This mixtape and the next 2 after it made the blueprint for modern R&B. Even Usher was copying this sound. When you think about it, it’s crazy that this guy became a popstar. At the same time, it makes sense because he has the talent to do it. While his music today does not sound like this there are still pieces of this in it.
Sep 29, 2024 @AOTWClub Its been over a year but this is actually one of the 3 Weeknd projects I've listened to (first 2 discs in Trilogy and Starboy) and my feelings are around the same if not a little more positive! Now in my opinion I think the grimy seedier sound of his early music was absolutely a wave that he started and while it's artistically way more interesting to me I actually prefer some of the poppier sounds from him, that doesn't demerit the quality of this project however. First things first the production on this whole mixtape is immaculate, now I can see people's perception of the project running the gammit but this part of the equation for this tape and for his entire discography that I've heard is undeniable. Same goes for his singing bro is great at what he does and it adds to the atmosphere he's chosen. The lyrics aren't very standout to me particularly but they are pretty vivid in a way that I can see people clinging on to and I appreciate it for its imagery. And I won't include it here but I did listen to the version of the mixtape that's on Trilogy with one of my favorite songs from the project, the bonus song exclusive to that release "Twenty Eight" it's very very good and I recommend anyone that liked the project to give it a listen! Favorite Songs: High For This, House Of Balloons (idk if I find Glass Table Girls to be just okay or bad I flip flop lol), The Party & The After Party, Wicked Games, The Knowing. RATING 8/10
Sep 29, 2024 ALRIGHT f---ers @Wreckless GAVE YOU BOOMER METAL NOW ITS TIME FOR ZOOMER METAL Bring Me The Horizon - Post Human: Survival Horror
Sep 29, 2024 I was going back and forth on like 4 albums of theirs to choose but I decided to go with one that I think sonically will mostly appeal to the era of Nu-Metal you guys like and it's short so you won't have to listen to much if you hate it but you'll also have longer projects to find in their discog if you like it! One of my favorite projects by one of my favorite bands, hope you enjoy!
Sep 29, 2024 Fun! Have only heard BMTH on Werewolf with Uzi and I love it, so I have some good hopes!
Sep 29, 2024 I'm in the same boat as @DiggleDogg69 . The only BMTH I've heard is their Uzi collab so this is super exciting.
Sep 29, 2024 They have another Uzi collab on their newest project in the series Post Human: NeXt Gen. Its very good!
