I can't tell whether the 2 minute song format is Kanye being a forward-thinking genius or just extremely lazy.

He was leaning toward shorter songs on Ye/KSG, but it's still out of character for someone whose most acclaimed song has a 5 minute moaning autotune outro. My biggest gripe with this album is the 27 minute runtime. There is evidence of verses, parts of songs + entire songs that were cut. Is Kanye just being concise while delivering as simple of message as possible?

"A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."

My inner stan rationalizing this album

cheers mate, in Aus Kanye is what we would call "completely cooked" which is term often reserved for the most junky of drug users who are unable to string together a sentence longer than "pass the bong". They are past the point of returning to sanity and cling to whatever belief drives them to staying sober (More often than not, these people IRL will cling to religion and subconsciously replace it with their drug behavior as their lives have been nothing but revolving around drugs and their only interest outside of drugs is there new found comradery and shared interest in a religion - very boring people)
not this is what happened to Kanye, but you can tell he's second guessing himself and doesn't know wtf he's doing half the time. I'd say his addiction in this instance would be success/reassurance he's doing the "right" thing and for some reason thinking his "vices" are worse than what they are.

Hadn't given it enough time to marinate. Had one haphazard listen and some of the stuff was great and some felt inauthentic to me.

As much as this is very different and obviously its own thing cemented in this era of Kanye, this feels like a spiritual extension of The College Dropout. It almost wraps up his catalogue, bringing it full circle. I listened again in full right before JIK, and after both I was shocked at how a Kanye entering a world of excess was fighting this fight even back in 03/04. Especially with the context of it leading to Graduation - the peak of his on-album superstar indulgence - then wrapping back to Yeezus over a half decade later where the God and Devil side of him were clearly at odds with each other.

Unlike Ye, this does indeed feel incredibly focused, comfortable, and assured in a way that TLOP eventually finished as, like Yeezus and everything before was. Even if Kanye album's have always had this aura of insecurity/vanity spilling out of them by nature of what he's talked about and the grandeur they play off, this doesn't feel thrown together like the two last year do.

As a front to back project, this is pretty comfortably sitting in the fifth spot behind MBDTF/CD/Yeezus/808s right now.

right, im not saying purposeful is better necessarily either. i just think tlop is a frayed album, full of several jams/classic individual tracks... but kind of a bellyflop. neither projects are classics and im not arguing JIK is good or better. think of it this way: you have the initial trilogy, the innovative trilogy (808, mbdtf, yeezus) then this period. i just see them more alike than not. i do think you may be underselling the merits of, say, Follow God to Use This Gospel tho. Speaking of Real Friends, you don't think Kanye's description of the fight with his dad is at least in the same ballpark of family confession that spines RF?

i also want to echo @ChadCunt for a moment lol. this does feel like the opposite of eminem's instincts on relapse (which has garnered a cult following and probably deserves 1,100 positive words in @WPG's patreon blog).... im watching bojack s6 rn, edit: which is predominantly set in rehab, and all i can muster is how confusing and misguided and rattled ur instincts must be after the a physical and mental rigmarole like that. its gotta be a mindfuck which is partly why recovering addicts find so much solace in ritualizing. we've talked offline about how this is knaye's Slow Train Coming , but i think it's important to contextualize and engage e JIK a bit from that vantage point. not a defense of the album mind you

I really like most of the album.

However, "God Is" might be my least favorite Kanye song of all time. The 2nd half somewhat saves the song, but I hate Kanye's singing at the beginning of this.

Reminds me of a church version of this monstrosity:

That’s some WPG s---. Listen to a rap album 20 times and wonders why people think he takes it too seriously lol
even if you think it’s a masterpiece, it’s clearly one of Kanye’s more controversial albums as far as the quality

People tend to agree his first two albums are really good

People are much more divided on Yeezus

It’s not a meme to me at all. Bipolar people off their meds have a huge suicide rate. It’s scary. Dude is clearly not OK and self medicating with a church cult.

    d---

there are tons of versions of these songs floating around, now we just wait for teenage redditors to pool their bitcoin and buy all the cut tracks & OGs
