Jan 2, 2015 not a pro ima let that sink in and just because he's holding it doesn't make it a real note
Jan 2, 2015 I think it's pretty clear Kanye is a better rapper than singer no matter how you look at it. With that said he's had his moments where he adds on to a song with a dope melody. This an all-time favorite of mine
Jan 2, 2015 As of right now, I really like this, but I have some of the same problems with it that I have with Big Brother. I like the idea of the song a bit more than the execution lyrically.. That said, unlike Big Brother, the production here is amazing. Initially I thought it was too sparse, but the minimalism really does heighten the emotional punch. Macca killed those keys. And those background vocals
Jan 2, 2015 The singing is the songs biggest flaw tbh. Kanye as a vocalist really isn't very good lol
Jan 2, 2015 Not entirely, it just gets on the verge of being.. i guess too much. A little too sentimental.. Idk, it's not terribly corny, but there's something about things like the "tell nori about me" bit that are almost too much for me.
Jan 2, 2015 don't see how anything in the song could come off as "corny" given the reality in the matter
Jan 2, 2015 Yeah you lost me here fam. The ONLY thing that goes a bit too far for me is the use of auto tune, but even that transforms his vocals into something we haven't heard from kanye before. Something more visceral As far as the lyrics go, I thought this was one of his best written verses to date. From the premise to the execution. It sounds like a lullaby his mom's singing to him as he falls asleep. The emotion behind "tell norrie about me" is so palpable His mom asking God about Ye, and then conveyig the message that Kanye asked for one, but got two angles.
Jan 2, 2015 Perhaps corny was the wrong word, but I can't really think of a better one. But I think one of the things that bothers me is that it goes from generic poeticism ("you're not perfect, but you're not your mistakes") to things that are so specific they're completely exclusive to kanye... one of the things about Runaway that makes it so great is that even with the d-ck pics and everything, it's still an anthem for everybody. This.. just isn't. And I don't know if that really makes it worse, but it does bother me a little bit.
Jan 2, 2015 I've never heard of a song/verse being discredited for being too specific, or too personal. That's usually the advice you give someone to make their writing better (more detail, less genericism) I'm not really followin you. Runaway was supposed to be an anthem for a generation, this is supposed to be his whispering in his ear
Jan 2, 2015 I'm aware, and it's not necessarily a criticism of the song so much as explaining why it hasn't meshed with me just yet. Edit: I'd like to add that I do love the song sonically, it's just the lyrics that I hold me back from calling this a straight classic, and they're not bad or anything.
Jan 2, 2015 Hmm just interesting that's all. It was the opposite for me. Production wise and lyrically it hit home right off the bat, but vocally it had to grow on me. But even that didn't take long Ye sounds so emotional by the end of his verse I can't imagine him performing this
