Feb 6, 2016 That Madono/Belfour Stars team was also one of my favorites growing up. Other than the Flyers (hometown) I also liked the Red Wings with Yzerman/Shannahan, and the Avalanche wuth Sakic/Bourque getting his cup. But I've kinda fallen off being a hockey fan other than just watching the Flyers.
Feb 6, 2016 I'm reading Darren McCarty's autobiography right now, it's pretty poorly written but it does bring back lots of good memories from the Yzerman/Shanahan team. It is nice that I can pull up all the fights and goals he's referring to on YouTube as well
Feb 6, 2016 my dad tells a good story about mccarty. they were in montreal, in the week leading up to the draft (this was 92 i think), doing a last round of player interviews. before you interview a prospect--usually in a hotel room--you have him take off his shoes and weigh/measure him. when mccarty was putting back on his shoes, my dad noticed that they were absolutely massive, like, size 14 or 15. so my dad checks the charts and sees that his skate size is something unremarkable, and it doesn't add up. so he asks "darren, how come you're wearing such big shoes?" and mccarty, who was expected to be a first-round pick (he slid a lot due to injury concerns) and therefore have a big signing bonus, said "well there's this mall next to my apartment, and they had a really good deal on shoes, but they only had the smallest and the biggest left. so i got a 7 and a 14 and i kind of alternate."
Feb 6, 2016 That's pretty funny, I wonder if he couldn't afford to get shoes elsewhere until he got his signing bonus? Unless he was already spending all his money on booze at that point. Also very cool that your dad was involved in prospect interviews - did he stay in that kind of career for long, working in the NHL?
