Ye is alright, but Kanye just doesn't have the time or drive to give his music the proper effort it deserves anymore.

The album could've benefitted from more rap features. If Kanye doesn't care enough to write verses, at least bring in some artists that could add meat to this project

Thats not really an excuse for having a review itself and the score be completely contradictory. Pitchfork takes the "art doesn't exist in a vacuum" bs and takes it to an extreme. I get to a degree you cannot seperate the art and the artist but you should do it where it doesn't apply. Majority of the album has very little to do with his political statements so why review it with a majority focus on his statements?

the “majority” of this review does not dwell on kanye’s political statements alone, but: kanye’s last six weeks are part of the performance. he chose to color the album this way. that’s his right as an artist, and an astute critic can—has to—consider that.

In his world, self-expression justifies itself, and speaking your most twisted thoughts out loud is an act of bravery, one that makes “I Thought About Killing You” not just a fine thing to write and share, but a work made from a place of love. Art, then, is a way of existing beyond reproach, an excuse for everything.

    Man, Garvey's best writing ever.

    a. I think the songs Wouldn't Leave, No Mistakes and Ghost Town are too good to describe the album they're on as a "sucky, hacky album"

    b. No 7 songs off other albums are gonna lose to these 7 songs, but like you said.. Testament to his consistency and quality of his discog

"Maybe we cared way too much, projecting all that genius onto a guy who wore shutter shades and never missed an opportunity for a mayonnaise pun. Maybe it created a dynamic that’s turned out to be actively toxic to both music and politics. Maybe we should abolish the word “genius,” or just find heroes who give a s---. "

"It would be convenient to say that ye fails because of his persona. It remains unclear exactly when West lost the map: Perhaps it was recently, or perhaps he has always been an ideologue representing nothing more or less than the hyper-individualist dogma of Kanye West. Until this year, the music had always been great enough to ostensibly eclipse the man himself, had we wanted that. But for most of the 2000s, loudly declaring West an a------ was, in itself, a certified a------ move, the party line of drunk uncles and least-favorite cousins. And besides that, the intersection of his art and persona was made clear eight years ago when he toasted to his own douchiness before anybody else could."

@WPG off topic, but how do they come up woth numerical scores for pitchfork? Is it solely on the writer or does the publication over rule?

there is no fixed process. it’s case-by-case depending on who/how big the artist is. read into that what you will.

I mean its obvious the review is more about reviewing modern day Ye than the album but whatever. Youre just gonna defend and deny it. You know the review wouldn't have been the same if kanye never came out in support of trump or made the slavery comment. The album has nothing to do with either of those things other than a small mention of it. The review has a bias towards kanye for his political opinions, opinions that many agreed with and disagreed with. If kanye went out and beat a woman it would make more sense to rake him over the coals but considering that his opinions aren't a surefire bad thing for a large portion of those who viewed it, to include it in the process of reviewing the album is inherently bias.

kanye spends a bunch of the album talking about how he's seen/received/misunderstood by the public. he's always done this! kanye's public performance is part of his art. he's done it very effectively in the past and he's attempting to do it here. you can't have it both ways.
why? i love kanye's catalog. why are you acting like i'm some bloodthirsty hater who wants to tear him down at all cost?
of course the criticism of the album would be different if kanye hadn't spent a month stanning trump and mocking slaves! it would literally be insane if that wasn't the case. what's wrong with you people?
and that's a failure of the album! or more specifically: kanye's inability to either address the actions that inspired the album or successfully and convincingly pivot to something else are the failure.
again, what do you think "bias" is??
to not include it would be malpractice. next.

You claim I do not know what bias is while admitting that the review had political bias.

man, i'm trying not to be cruel or dismissive here but.......you seem really stupid.

considering a celebrity's political performance is not exhibiting "bias" against them. it's literally what critics should do. if earl sweatshirt put out an album where all he'd tweeted and spoken publicly about for six weeks was margaret thatcher, that would be relevant.
